In the box: The Jabra Elite Sport arrives with 3 different sets of foam tips and ear gels, as well as 2 different sets of ear wings. Mixing and matching the combinations is a bit tedious, but should give most users a nearly perfect match. I did not get a flawless fit, but the ear wing that tucks underneath the ear ridge keeps them securely in place. Pairing with my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was fast and easy. Although the pamphlets that came with the device touted compatibility with Apple only, the device is fully compatible with Android through the Jabba Sport app. There is a small six-inch USB cable for charging the case, which can in turn charge the buds for a combined 9 hours of use. The case is nicely made, and glows red when charging and green when fully charged. The buds feel substantial and not cheap, and I like their discreet black color.
Impressions: Like every other truly wireless earbud that I have tried, the device is lacking a bit in bass. The features that set the Jabar Elite Sport apart are: 1) This is one of the few truly wireless earbuds that has controls for everything, including for increasing/decreasing the volume, playing, pausing, skipping forward and skipping back on music tracks. This also includes a button for the "hear-through feature" that allows ambient environmental noises to seep in for a safety-conscious runner/biker through the mic. 2) It comes with an array of individualized tips; 3) The right bud can be used solo. 4) Heart rate analyzer and a respectable integrated sports/fitness app; 4) Relatively clear phone calls; 5) Waterproof/sweat resistant.
Conclusion: Anyone preparing to embrace the truly wireless technology should be prepared to make sacrifices because it is relatively new. However this should not mean that the user should have to endure seriously subpar audio quality. The Jabra Elite Sport suffers from an industry-wide malady; it lacks somewhat in bass. And clean bass is the mark of a premium device. It is also bulky - and perhaps for that reason - starts to feel uncomfortable in the ears for extended running. The controls are stiff and require hard pressure. Its battery capacity is of middling rating. Because of Jabra's credentials in the hands-free phone calling arena, it is better than any other truly wireless earbud in that respect. I already have a Fitbit and do not plan to use the fitness software, but this is an added boon. The audio quality will not blow the user away. But it remains among the best when measured against its peers.
In short, these are great earbuds considering they are truly wireless. I know some people could have some fit issues, but they do provide 3 sizes of tips/wings and 3 sizes of silicon and foam tips. It took me a little while to find a combination that worked for my ears. When you get a good fit, the sound is excellent. I enjoy a bit of bass in my music and these won't disappoint (assuming a good fit). Good fit for me was using the small sized wings and small foam tips. So I think it's imperative that you find a good fit, otherwise your music, comfort, etc will be compromised and you will not be getting the most out of this product. Battery life is not an issue for me since I don't use them continuously for more than 3 hours. These can get a bit uncomfortable during long sessions, but nothing concerning for me. I'm not currently using the companion app, so I do not have an opinion on that.
Running - when I go out on runs, I will only use one earbud. You have to use the right side as this is the main earbud. I found that the audio pass-through does not work well with wind, so when you are running, you can't really hear your music or external sounds...just wind noise. That's why I ended up going out with just one earbud. I'm fine with this as it will still allow me to listen to music and still hear my surroundings for safety. I have taken them on 1+ hour runs and there aren't any issues with battery life. Also, no issues with them falling out. I do occasionally have to readjust them during my run, but nothing major and no risk of them falling out.
Travel - I travel a lot for work. Typically, I will fly twice a week (one round-trip). This is where it will lose a star on the rating for me, but by no means a deal-breaker. For some reason, if I have these earbuds in during takeoff or landing, the sounds will start to get muffled and fade out. It's still there, but it gets super quiet. I suspect this is due to the change in cabin air pressure during ascending and descending, but I'm not quite sure. The earbuds do create a fairly strong 'seal' in your ear canal if using the foam tips, so not sure if that contributes to the issue I'm experiencing. I will reach out the Jabra to check and see if that is a known issue, but as of now, I have been putting them in the case during takeoff and landing.
Summary: Probably one of the best truly wireless earbuds that you can get right now. Once you get the correct fit, the sounds is awesome. No issue with battery life, but I have experienced a strange issue with audio when ascending or descending while using on a plane. With that being said, I would definitely recommend these!
