And You too - because You will roll on the floor laughing.
This is one of those hilarious short stories where our 'womanizer' Harry really gives all his best. Only that in his case his 'Best' is always his 'Worst'!
As You can read in the sinopsis/book description, Private Eye Harry McGlade is on the prowl, looking for a one-night stand. Wjhat, in McGlade's case, means more a five-minute stand.
When he eyes a sexy lady at his local bar, he thinks he's in Harry's Heaven...
But she isn't alone. There's a guy with her. And this guy has a gun...
When the local mafia becomes involved with McGlade's tryst, things start going bad.
Then they go really bad when a baby comes into the picture. And the only one McGlade can call for help is his Ex-partner in law, Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels.
It's hilarious, funny, sarcastic and exciting, too. There's sex (or what Harry may call it ..:) - violence (less than sex...:) - mobsters (yes!) - guns (too!), a lot of the usual JA.K. twists and turns - and... last not least A BABY!
Having said that, "Babe on Board" (originally titled "Jailbait") while having some of the crass charm of previous McGlade adventures falls considerably short in terms of laughs. There are some witty one-liners, and other trademarks of the McGlade series, but nothing at least for me that made a lasting impression. Additionally, there has been an attempt to "flesh-out" the character of McGlade and introduce an event that has a life changing effect on our blundering hero. While I am all for fleshing out characters, the event for me didn't ring true and I will paraphrase from the product description (as it was written prior to being renamed "Babe on Board") of the novel because this is exactly how I feel, "Depth, emotion and sensitivity have no place in a humorous mystery". Also, be aware that while this is billed in part as a "Jack Daniels Mystery", she has a very tertiary, cameo like role in the story (in my mind more for comic relief than anything else).
In fact, the whole story was a little bit off for me (It was like reading a Lawrence Sanders McNally mystery written by Vincent Lardo...all the normal tropes, characters and settings are present but the essence is missing). I will also say that the story ends very abruptly, leaving me with a "Is that it?" type of feeling.
This story hasn't put me off McGlade, but it definitely is the weak link in the series. If you haven't read any McGlade, I would urge you to read some of his earlier misadventures first before reading "Babe on Board", in particular "The Necro File" for classic McGlade.
While some found this short novella entertaining, we were not at all pleased with most of the “plot,” not to mention the crude overt sex talk. In general, we wished we hadn’t read this – and it’s ridiculously abrupt ending was sort of a slap in the face as a further insult!
Note: This novella also available as an eBook entitled "Jailbait" (which makes no better sense...)
