About Jack Getze
Former newsman Jack Getze's award-winning Austin Carr mystery series is published by Down & Out Books. The latest, BIG SHOES, won Deadly Ink's David Award for Best Mystery of 2015. A stand-alone thriller, THE BLACK KACHINA, was published in 2017. His short fiction has appeared in A Twist of Noir, Beat to a Pulp, The Big Adios and several anthologies.
Once upon a time, author Getze let the character Austin Carr interview him.
Austin: Do you make a lot of mistakes?
The author: At least one bad error a day. Agreeing to let you ask me questions was obviously today's.
A: Did you tell Dru BIG NUMBERS is not exactly a cozy?
T. I sent her a copy.
A. That's not the same thing. Maybe you'd better describe the parts of BIG NUMBERS that stick out a little from that cozy mold. Ha ha.
T. The three sex scenes are played for laughs - and short, like my real life. People actually die on the page, but the violence is minimal and not gory.
A. Almost a cozy? Are you kidding me? Your old book description on Amazon said, "Root for divorced dad Austin Carr, a lovable, oversexed scamp who'll use anything and everything to get his kids back. Think Bugs Bunny with guns and a penis."
T. That's been changed now. Jeez. I'm so glad I agreed to this interview. You're killing me, Austin. Killing me! But honestly, you're the one who's always thinking about sex, making suggestive remarks, falling in love with every redhead you meet. Why can't you grow up?
A. Me? You're the one who writes this stuff. I'm a fictional character!
T. OK, that's it. I'm out of here.

Titles By Jack Getze
This anthology is a sampling from twelve authors published by Down & Out Books. The contributions include six brand new stories, three excerpts from forthcoming novels and three previously published stories.
The line-up of Down, Out and Dead is impressive—Anonymous-9, Trey R. Barker, Rob Brunet, Tom Crowley, Frank De Blase, Les Edgerton, A.C. Frieden, Jack Getze, David Housewright, Bill Moody, Gary Phillips and Robert J. Randisi.
About to be ingeniously murdered—snatched off a private fishing yacht by a live, six-hundred-pound giant bluefin—a down-on-his-luck stockbroker recalls the events and bad choices that precipitated his gruesome end. His killer—Mr. Blabbermouth—might be any of a dozen suspects, including a steroid-crazed wrestler angry over Austin's poor investment recommendations, a jealous sales manager often the target of Austin’s jokes, and a widow with long red hair, sexy curves, and plenty of secrets. Or could there be another suspect Austin overlooked entirely until he stepped on board that yacht?
Praise for BIG NUMBERS:
“Darkly comic, with an engaging protagonist.” —T.J. MacGregor, Edgar Award winning author of the Tango Key Mysteries
“Big Numbers is a gritty, sexy, violent, and funny book.” —Liz Clifford at Reviewed by Liz
“Wonderful characters…well-written, entertaining…a good read.” —Connie Anderson for Armchair Interviews
“Indiana Jones has his whip and Luke Skywalker has his light saber, but for Austin Carr, his full-boat grin is the weapon of choice.” —Melissa for Lou Reads
“Jack Getze started his career as a newspaper reporter. As a result, Big Numbers is lean and mean, with not a word wasted. A truly fun, genuinely funny read.” —Lisa Guidarini for Bluestalking Reader
“Served up with an edginess reminiscent of good noir, sprinkled with a salty dash of pulp fiction plot twists, and delivered in a sardonic voice that bites like the afterburner of a Herradura Gold shooter, Jack Getze hands us a new series it's impossible to ignore.” —Susan Goodwill, author of Brigadoom
A life-affirming, feel-good story of love, family and the special way new babies can inspire, Making Hearts introduces a character readers will strongly care about and root for. Noelle wins the hearts of all with her loving enthusiasm for life, her wit, and by personally defeating the villain’s lowdown scheme in an astonishing climax readers will never forget.
Praise for MAKING HEARTS:
“Wow! I’ve never read a book like this! Totally engrossing, Making Hearts is an absolute tour de force. Jack Getze has done himself proud with this work. I’ve never read a story with an infant as the protagonist and more—an infant who acts proactively against formidable opponents with overpowering advantages and wins out. This is a book of supreme imagination, originality and most of all—heart. I am in complete awe of Getze’s talent displayed supremely in this work. This is the book the cliché—you gotta read this! —was invented for.” —Les Edgerton, author of The Genuine, Imitation, Plastic Kidnapping; Bomb; The Bitch and many others
Good thing she likes Austin.
She just won’t let Austin out of the business. Plus Johnny “The Turk” Korsay is on a rampage and had his crooked cops arrest Luis, the bartender Austin’s best friend. Why? Because Austin saw The Turk kill Heriberto. And now he’s gunning for the stock broker.
It’s another brush with violent death and a sexy redhead for Austin Carr when Mama Bones and her rival Jersey associate of a fading New York crime family battle for the future of imported sex slaves, boardwalk tourist business and surprising horse racing secrets, past and present.
“Big Shoes is a five-star romp.”
—Rick Bylina, best-selling author of One Promise Too Many
“In this jaunty follow-up to BIG NUMBERS, a scruffy stockbroker returns to tangle with mobsters, women and his own big mouth.
“The good news, as the story opens, is that the hero is in the company of a gorgeous naked lady. The bad news is that she’s pointing a shotgun at him. It’s a typical predicament for Austin Carr, a semi-shady New Jersey financial professional temporarily in charge of Shore Securities while his boss is on vacation...
“Carr is continually getting into trouble over his weakness for breasts, his penchant for self-incriminating statements and his vestigial moral sensibility, which, like an appendix, makes itself felt at inconvenient times.
“The way to read this book is to ... relax and enjoy Getze’s punchy dialogue and colorful characters–Bluefish’s henchman Max is an especially pungent creation–and his hilarious hangdog protagonist’s dissolute charm.
“If Elmore Leonard had gotten a securities license, this is the book he might have written.”
-- KIRKUS Indie
Wall Street’s miasmal garbage washes up on the Jersey Shore when a small time broker falls in love: Is he attracted to the beautiful lady—or her brother’s inside information?
Held spellbound by a steamy, auburn-haired woman with a dubious past and a get-rich-quick, insider trading scheme, Austin Carr knocks down a beehive of bad-acting Bonacellis, including the ill-tempered “Mr. Vic” Bonacelli, who wants his redhead back, and local mob lieutenant Angelina “Mama Bones” Bonacelli, architect of a strange and excruciating death trap for the fast-talking stockbroker she calls smarty pants.
To survive, Austin must unravel threads of jealousy, revenge and new affections, discover the fate of a pseudo ruby called the Big Mojo and slam the lid on a pending United States of America vs. Austin Carr insider trading case. Can Austin and his Jersey Shore mouthpiece possibly out maneuver the savvy U.S. District Attorney from Manhattan? Will anything matter for Austin ever again if Mama Bones flips that switch?
The teenage daughter of a killer.
“Kevin thinks he’s a millionaire. This jar of pennies weighs a ton, so Kevin thinks he must be rich, but there’s no connection between weight and value. Kevin’s father is proof of that.”
What happens when Santa threatens to put Kevin on the naughty list?
A divorced dentist. A former prostitute. A retired cop. An escaped convict. The daughters of a drunk. These are just some of the characters who bare their souls in this issue of Spinetingler Magazine. How does unimaginable loss redefine a teenager’s life? What does it take for a mother who’s barely coping with life to learn to appreciate her son? What could cause fifty-year-old secrets to surface?
What truths will surface when our diverse cast of characters faces their defining moments? Join us on journeys fascinating and unforgettable.
Praise for THE BLACK KACHINA:
"Jack Getze's newest novel, The Black Kachina, marks the arrival of a new star in the international thriller pantheon. Move over, Jack Reacher and make a place at the table for Colonel Maggie Black and her Robin, journalist Jordan Scott. Getze has just hit it out of the park, a gargantuan tape-measure of a clout with this, his best novel to date. My hope is that he's hard at work writing the second of what is sure to be a hugely-successful series. Movie people should be all over this one." --Les Edgerton, author of The Bitch, The Rapist, The Genuine, Imitation, Plastic Kidnapping, Lagniappe and others
"With an intriguing mix of Native American folklore and the latest in leading edge weapons technology, Jack Getze takes you on a journey that has possible written hard across the storyline. A thriller that chills. He asks what if a lethal weapon fell into the hands of someone who was obsessed with fulfilling the wildest wishes of his ancestors? Then he throws together a local reporter and a rebellious ace flyer and sets them both against a clock that is racing towards one of the worst disasters in the history of America." --Gordon Brown, author of four crime thriller novels set in Scotland and the US and a co-founder and director of the crime writing festival Bloody Scotland
"The Black Kachina shows Jack Getze is not a one-trick pony. A major departure from his Austin Carr series--which is also excellent--with all the elements required to be a mainstream bestseller." --Dana King, Shamus-award nominated author of Resurrection Mall
"Getze has that uncommon ability of being able to tell a hell of a story with just the right amount of dark humor. Always a winner!" Terrence McCauley, award-winning author of The James Hicks Series
"It's a daunting task to keep a story complex and suspenseful while making the key players come across so colorful and convincing. Jack Getze makes it seem effortless." --Erin Williams, The Paperback Stash
