My rating is really 3.5 stars...
Pros:
Story was entertaining, except the part where Jack deals with his antagonist, which seemed uncharacteristic with Jack character.
Liked the hints of romance that never bloomed, because not every story should lead straight to sex between main characters. Kudos to author, script writers and director.
Appreciated the acting quality of all the characters, both protagonists and antagonists. There were only two obvious places where acting skills and line delivery were soft (end of junky-interrogation scene & street conversation in New Orleans between antagonists was dubbed over).
The motel scene between main protaganists about parenthood and gender issues was intriguing (neither women nor men are more or less suited for parenthood).
Perhaps the paternity issue was not fully resolved, neither genetically nor metaphorically, although certainly a Storge bond was formed.
Cons:
Characterizes DoD contractors as money-grabbing, murderous, war-mongers...again. Seems like a tired-out story mechanism, although I do realize this IS a story about military-people (both present and former as protagonists and antagonists). Having the military itself be the antagonist would be equally trite/cliche'. How about a "few bad actors secretly" being the bad guys within either the DoD or support contractors rather than the organizations themselves? Ya, that's been overdone too.
There were some scene-to-scene transitions that lacked clarity/linearity as to how the characters got from there to here. Indeed, some books seem to suffer more than others during the transition from text to motion picture, in order to keep the time short for the film.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back - Never Watch Again
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2019
I'm a huge fan of Tom Cruise and will watch any film he's in. Some could argue that I'm an apologist and like anything with him in it, but I'm open to seeing fault in some of his films. Jack Reacher was a great character for him to portray, despite the well-chronicled physical differences, because it gives him yet another vehicle to be a bad ass in. I loved the original film even though it jumped into the Jack Reacher series midstream, and the sequel continues by doing the same. Never Go Back suffers from too many distractions to ever generate enough emotion behind its characters.Unfortunately, I feel like they chose the wrong book for this film because it introduces new characters and makes this feel too much like a cookie-cutter story. It supposedly is one of the most popular in the series but it must help to have all of the context built before it much like you would if reading the novel. However, a lot of the twists are predictable and even some of the lines involved with plot reveals are typical. For this, the film doesn't really stand out in doing anything that hasn't been done before. There are tons of action scenes, a few in New Orleans which are really well shot and presented in 4K. But the relationship between Jack Reacher and the girl they rescue from the movie's villain feels forced and off tone.I think Cobie Smulders is perhaps the best surprise with the film in playing the balance to Tom Cruise's action hero. The villain assassin of the movie is pretty good too. One of the other things I really appreciate about this release, and Tom Cruise movies in particular, is that the Special Features selection is really great. There's 5 or so features about various aspects of the film, all of which are presented mostly by Tom himself. Say what you will, but he knows what the movie fans love and seeing how he does all of his own stunts and everything else when Producer of the movie, it's no wonder he makes a good flick. It's not the strongest action movie, or Tom Cruise movie, but it's worth a rental or bargain deal. The 4K release does shine especially in a few of the scenes as mentioned above in New Orleans. The opening sequence is perhaps the best moment of the film, and was in the trailer if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully if they do another Jack Reacher film they can focus on what makes the character great, and that's his rogue lone-wolf attitude. Never Go Back is an okay film and that's okay, because Tom Cruise works hard to give us these blockbusters every year and sometimes they just don't click on all cylinders.Case came in great condition with a slipcover. 4K, Blu-ray, and digital copies all included in this release.

First one was good even though the character Jack Reacher is based on is one Big Bad Dude, yet Tom Cruise did a good job along with a great supporting cast.
Second one is laced with the typical feminist unbalance point of view about women. I love it when a woman is strong yet humble and uses her whit to overcome certain circumstances. This is why Angelina Jolie was so likable in her roles; strong yet comes across humble to the core as she progresses in her character's growth process.
But this movie is the typical "Oh Jack Reacher, you male chauvinist, I can do just a good of a job beating up 5 guys as you can, wa wa wa wa wa wa." "NO YOU CAN'T" Woman! This is not a super hero movie woman! This type of directing, writing, and filing is ruining a lot, of what could be, good movies.
It's all about the balance and this is not it. Most of the movies Tom Cruise is in end up being enjoyable and entertaining, but this movie was absolute trash writing & directing.

No where near as good as the book. Other than a couple of characters and a few similar scenes, nothing is even remotely like the book. Much of Reacher's character is based on his imposing size, age and energy. None of which Cruise can portray. Cruise looks old, tired and small in this his second stint as the dynamic ex 110 M.P. Major. It is sad when the novel that had such great potential and wealth of background is turned into something like this.

It's the weekend (for me, anyway). Now is the time to rent this movie, get some popcorn, get on the couch, and hit play.

I can't lie: Tom Cruise is one of my favorite actors. I've enjoyed every single movie that he's ever been in. And, no, I'm not a secret Scientologist here to sway movie rankings. Whatever he does in his private life is his business. I'm only here because Xenu... I mean... I wanted to say that, just like the last Reacher movie, I really enjoyed this one. It's a basic action thriller, with good fight scenes, car chases, cat-and-mouse stuff, etc. If you just want to escape for a bit from your boring life and step into a world that's a little more dangerous, then this movie isn't a bad choice. I think you'll like it. Others have already pointed out the plot and storyline and whatever flaws they saw. I'll just say that the ultimate critic is yourself and if you like action movie and Tom Cruise, then I think you'll like this movie.

And acting and ridiculous mistakes.
1. The acting was atrocious and not just the supporting actors, Tom Cruise sucked!
2. Dress Blues worn in almost every scene? Anyone who's been around the Army for more than a minute knows that's bullsh-t. People don't wear dress blues to work. That's like a civilian wearing a tuxedo to the office. IF there were any military advisors to this movie they should be fired and never used again.
3. I tolerate Lee Child's writing because I realize it's not a documentary, but please someone should tell him never to make another movie - ever again.

Not as good as the first one, but JR: Never Go Back did keep me entertained. It does start to veer into almost an Ethan Hunt Mission Impossible-like plot where Reacher has superhero like powers. It gets a little boring seeing him get into gun and fist fights that he tends to win no matter what the odds. But what makes this movie and the first Jack Reacher movie engaging is not the "if" of the various situations, but the "how" of them. How will he get out of the thorny situations he finds himself in? So if you're looking for a decent action movie with some good fight choreography, you could do a lot worse than Never Go Back.

No even close to as good as the first. If this is the direction of the franchise, then there's nothing to look forward to in it.

Ho-hum plot. Reacher just isn't believable in this one. The whole "relationships" bit is distracting, and the kid is entirely irritating. Again and again in the film you "back away" (which a good film is not supposed to let you do), and you realize that not much has actually happened in the past five minutes. Too many slow sections that contribute little to nothing to the development of what plot there is.
This movie tries to be more "complex" than the first, and instead it fails to stick with the simple, working formula. This film was not Reacher.
