Couldn't have asked for a more exciting ending to what has been a tremendous trilogy. If you have read the first two in the series then you will be excited to know that all the characters are back in this one, some with surprising results. The book opens with Alexia Dreager having been on the back of a flying fox, Dagger, for two days. Once arriving in the cavern, shortly later along comes Jack Staples on a black panther, Wild on an overly large meerkat, Arthur Greaves on a winged beaver, the giant Andreal on a very large rabbit and Mrs. Dumphry on a tusked elephant with two sets of wings. Ten thousand of the Assassin's deadliest warriors have been in pursuit since they left the City of Shadows.
Is it possible that Madelaine Dreager, Alexia's mother, is still alive? What about Alexia's friends from the Band of Rogues? Are they still alive and/or being tortured? What is so special about the Poet's Coffer that Arthur stole from the Assassin's quarters?
Odius (death) has been following the Shadow Souled who are after the Children of Prophecy, Jack and Alexia. The Assassin's shadow is sweeping the land, blocking out the sun. Elion (Sephari) arrives to tell the group in the cavern to soak in the last of the sun's rays as it may be the last time in this life that they see it!
What is Jack's new memory? Meeting themselves back in time just before the circus fire of the first book, will Arthur successfully give the Poet's Coffer to Parker, Jack's brother? Why does he need it? How will Alexia react when she learns something very important about her past life?
There are an amazing number of valuable life grounding advice in this book. What these kids and adults face is incredible. Sometimes they nearly give in but there is always a thought or something that helps them "break through" the darkness.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND this entire series. Yes it is dark at times but the light shines through. The books are very well written, clean and gripping. LOVE THEM!
Just so you know, Richard and I are a Top 1000 reviewer. HOWEVER we purchased this entire series. It was not given to us.
