In Jackal, Juliana is desperate. Because of her uncle’s death, she and her much-younger sisters are thrown out of their home and forced to find their new guardian, a man by the name of Rupert. Juliana is hunted by dangerous men while Rupert is hunted by a man even more dangerous, The Hunter. Will they learn to trust one another before their enemies catch them?
Jackal is the kind of book I like—a bit of romance mixed with danger and set in a time and place far from here and now. The novel moved quickly and intrigued me the entire time. If it was not the developing romance between Rupert and Juliana, it was the revelation of the next part of the mystery.
I enjoyed the sweet romance. The way Juliana and Rupert learned to love each other as they spent time together doing the things of daily life was beautiful. I also loved watching Rupert and Juliana learn to trust one another. I would not have been easy considering the weight of the responsibilities and dangers that trust would reveal.
The Hunter was a mystery to me. I could not guess who he was. However, that might have been because The Hunter’s identity was a man who had only been mentioned once or twice. I wish the author had done a better job of giving the readers a way to guess.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend this sweet romance.
Juliana is certainly a woman who knows how to make a stand. Her actions and choices are determined by what she feels is best for those she loves. She puts her sister and their chaperone. (Heather if you read this, please write one more book with Mrs. Burnham as the main character! I really want to know her story.) Juliana will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of these three females. Henceforth, they descend upon the only person they can go to--Rupert.
Rupert is the epitome of the proper gentleman. He is a great role model for young men to try and emulate. He loves and respects God, country and family. He is also a strong individual, and possibly the only one who could coexist with Juliana. Rupert's decisions are also driven by what he feels best to protect those he loves.
If you like this time period, romance, mystery, humor, and clean reading, you will love this book! I recommend you just go ahead and purchase all three books and take a day or two to just sit and read. You won't be disappointed!
In hope that made some sense! :)
I enjoyed it. I got a little confused at times in the story about different people and what they did, but that might have been because this was the second book. I'm interested in reading the first and more from this author. I like a clean, short, sappy romance.

As if that isn’t enough the heroine’s appearance and the hero’s reaction simply ramps up the tension on all levels and is maintained from the first to the final page. This is balanced with heart-warming emotions from Rupert and Juliana. As always with this author the scene-setting is so vivid I felt I was there at every stage of the tale. So I enjoyed ‘travelling’ through the Austrian, English countryside and London scenery with equal pleasure.
The plot is tight and fast paced with several more secondary characters involved, so pay attention, as a couple of them have very similar names.
Her character descriptions, including those of the secondary characters is awesome – “The mummified woman had begun the laborious process of moving her skeletal being with the aid of a rosewood cane.” –and that is her description of Juliana’s chaperone!
Jackal is another well written, well thought out novel from Heather Gray’s regency stable of books, and I’d recommend it to any lover of Regency romantic suspense.
Rupert worked for the British government, but went into hiding to protect others. Juliana spent her life protecting her two step sisters. This is their story, complete with humour and mystery.
My only suggestion is to tighten the writing making it impossible to skip paragraphs.
