Jackery Explorer 300 Plus - The good and bad

Jackery Explorer 300 Plus - The good and bad
Looking for a power source to keep a mobile refrigerator on during travel I reviewed numerous possibilities and Jackery was in the forefront as a respected and well known brand. The Explorer 300 Plus had the capacity I needed to power the refrigerator for the few hours I needed, or so I thought …Very light, very small both immediately struck me when unboxing this. For its size it packs a punch. It’s well built, solid feel …My Experience using this …My plan was to plug the power station into either my vehicle 12v socket or the vehicles onboard 120vac plug to charge while driving. The portable refrigerator I was using would be plugged into the power station’s 12v port as it made no sense to up convert to AC, then back down to 12vdc that the refrigerator accepts. While driving the power station would be charging (being kept charged) while the refrigerator was running. When stopped, the power station would continue powering the refrigerator until I returned. This is where the first issue surfaced. The power station seemed to charge ok until it was fully charged, at which time it stopped charging and drained until shutoff. My refrigerator was plugged into the 12vdc port of the power station at the time. The manual clearly stated this could be used as an EPS (emergency power source) with pass-thru … powering and charging at the same time. A phone call to Jackery support reveals that for this to work, a 12vdc source must be used to charge if you’re powering a device by 12vdc port, the same applies to charging via the 120vac and powering device via 120vac.Ok, not ideal … but now that I know how I can work with it I’ll use the vehicles 12vdc power to charge the Jackery. Through some experimentation I also discovered that having *any* device plugged into the 120vac port will keep the 12vdc port powered as well, an acceptable workaround allowing me to use the 120vac plug in the vehicle to charge the Jackery while driving.UPDATE: It seems that having the AC section simply turned on, with the minuscule amount of idle current that it draws, is enough to trigger the “pass-thru charging” and keep the 12vdc port on as well, with an unnoticeable impact on battery life.So I started “testing” powering the refrigerator and to my surprise I could run the refrigerator for almost 12 hours on ECO mode from the 12vdc port when fully charged, which is pretty awesome for this diminutive power station. The next issue I encountered is that the unit shuts down after a period of time. I soon discovered that is changeable in the app, as a number of things that I couldn’t seem to change any other way are. This leads me to my final, and perhaps biggest gripe of all … you can pair the app to work via bluetooth, or over wifi (cloud), but not both. Initially I chose wifi, but upon thinking about that choice later I figured when in the car I have no wifi for the power station, so this isn’t going to work. No problem, re-paired via bluetooth. Bluetooth, however, seems to disconnect after a short-ish period of time and no amount of restarting the app forces a re-connection. To reconnect you have to hold the DC and AC buttons to force re-pairing on the power station, and then you can connect via app. This is a problem as I want to have the ability on long drives to determine whether this is still on, charged, running the refrigerator.I was considering returning the power station at this point, but decided due to the low cost, size/power, and build quality that I would commit to keeping it. I’m hopeful that the bluetooth issues can be resolved via firmware update at some point. If not, and as time pass and I can rely on the unit to charge and stay powered on I may not need that functionality as much anyway. If solid power in a small package is your main concern, this may be the best option on the market currently. There are a few lesser known options that are attempting to build the reputation Jackery has already achieved that may be suitable as well.

I'm a scout leader and do a fair amount of camping. I recently got a CPAP and needed something that would power it. I was skeptical of this little thing when I got it but really wanted something reasonably portable and sturdy that I can toss in the back of my truck or troop trailer when packing, would last at least 2 nights camping, and would be easy enough to carry for a few miles to a camp staff building where I could charge it if needed. I'm happy to say after my first weekend trip with it I believe it will be all of those things for me.

My first night I got it I tested it out at home. Charged the unit up and plugged my CPAP into the AC inverter with my machine running as I would normally use it at home... The battery only lasted about 5 hours any my wife complained about a slight fan noise (from the inverter) before giving out. I plugged the Jakery in to charge and power pass though worked great until the unit was charged then it stopped and switched back over to battery mode and the battery ran down again.

Night two I plugged in a DC adaptor I purchased for my CPAP and found I could almost make it though a night. The Jackery lasted about 7hrs before the battery was dead. Proving the DC converter was more efficient.

My 3rd night I ran the machine with the DC power converter turning off the humidifier, heated tube, and (something else). This time the battery was only at 87% after 7.5hrs of sleep. Note this was my first time turning all the comfort features off on the CPAP and it really was not that big of a deal. Yes nice to have but not musts for me.

Having proven itself I took it camping with us this weekend and it worked great. I used my CPAP both nights, charged my phone and watch off it while still having about 60% power left. I am pretty sure it will make it the full week through summer camp without charging and if it does need charged it seems I can charge to 100% in about 2hrs on AC if needed. Yes I could buy the solar panels but it seems like one more thing to hope does not get broken and most of the time our camp sites are in the woods with a fair amount of shade. I'm wondering how the battery will hold up during winter camping and I'm sure as we start training and doing more backpacking trips I'l need something smaller and lighter but for now this fits my requirements. Looking forward to more well rested nights in the woods and while at anchor on our boat.

Sturdy construction and very well built. It can charge my IPhone 20 times using the USB A port. Also plugged in my floor lamp into the AC outlet using a 9 watt bulb equivalent to 60 watts, and it lit brightly. The display said 8 watts was being used, and that there was 18 hours of power left under this load. I bought this for emergency use during prolonged power outages. It looks to be great for this purpose. Charges from 0 to full charge in 1.5 hours if plugged into a wall outlet. I plan to add a solar panel to this as a backup charging option. It’s worth the price I paid, and it meets my current needs.

Purchased to replace a much older 290 Explorer with NMC batteries and 200W maximum.
    * glad to have the LiFePO chemistry for frequent and daily use, and less concern about using from 100-0% discharge.
    * huge upgrade - charges very quickly with the provided AC cable up to 215W input, and close to 100W input with USBC charging.
    * handles 300W AC loads without issue, but not able to surge much above (medium small vacuum for example shuts off the inverter).
Con - * AC inverter is much less efficient than the 290 Explorer, and the accuracy has dropped significantly; a similar small load on AC drains faster on this new device and the wattage shown is lower than actual.
    * charges well with Jackery 100 Solar saga using the provided DC barrel to USB-C adapter.
    * DC outputs are efficient and work very well for laptops and any USB or USBC electronics.

Overall, happy with the purchase and using almost daily, while limiting AC inverter usage to when needed (see Con above).

I absolutely love this portable battery! As the owner of a Photo Booth business, it’s essential to have reliable power during events, and this battery has been a game changer. I used it to power my Photo Booth for a full four-hour event, and it performed flawlessly. Still had 55%! It’s incredibly convenient, compact, and easy to carry around. **Be careful as there are 2 versions of this powerstation. One has 2x100W USB-C and the other has 1-USB-C in/our and a 15W USB-C. There are 2 different sets of photos used in this amazon advertisement. The Jackery Website is the same. YouTuber reviews are for the 2x100W versions that aren't available anymore. You will receive the powerstation with 1 -100w USB-C + 15W USB-C (plus 15w USB-A)**
I use this as my car travel power station. It powers a compressor cooler/car fridge that draws 35W-55W. Runs the cooler for 24hours in summer temperatures. In the back of the car running the 60L cooler, after 9 hours the Jackery 300 was down to 64%.
When we stopped for the night at a hotel, we would plug the Jackery in on the nightstand (there’s usually only one AC outlet on a lamp) and plug all our phones/ipads and use the AC outlet for C-PAP. Just make sure it’s set to 12h or 24H for C-PAP or you will be gasping in the night as it only draws 35W(AC outlet) and the Jackery will shut off.
Charging: Charges fast, usually shows 208W or higher. When charging iPads AND charging the Jackery, the wattage is higher. Usually 250w, so I’m guessing this is the “pass through” charging for the devices plugged into the Jackery and the battery charger for the Jackery. If you are traveling, plugging it in at a Starbucks/fast food restaurant for half an hour or so will take you from 25% to 70%.
Solar charging is fiddley using the adapters and the in/out USB-C port. 100W panel seems throttled to 45W when charging. I wish it had a proper 8040 plug or Anderson plug for solar input. When solar charging, you lose one of the USB-C ports, the 100W one. Leaves you with the 15W USB-C, really not great, needs more ports and 15W isn't enough to use a hub.

The app works OK to control the AC/DC/light, but you can’t turn the main Jackery Power ON or OFF. You have to physically push the power button on the Jackery, then the app will work.

I have a 300W/600W mini Ramen cooker. When set to 300W, it draws 322W (see picture) and the Jackery cuts off after 45 seconds or so. So the 300W inverter doesn’t have any wiggle room, 300W, that’s it!!

The display is bright and easy to read/figure out. I find it to be very useful, decently portable and so far…well built.

I’ve had this unit for about 2 months. When charging my phone once per day and running a 1 watt fan overnight, the battery lasts about 2 weeks.

The solar panel is a very slow charge but it does charge. When plugged into house power, it charges fully in only an hour and a half or so.

Would not recommend if you want to run anything requiring 250 watts or more as you will drain the battery quickly. Perfect for charging small electronics like phone, razors, fans, etc…

I specifically purchased to run my CPAP machine during power outages. Cons only one AC outlet. Pros runs my CPAP for six hours vs the Bluetti which only lasted between 3.5-4.5 hours. Sturdy built yet surprisingly light weight. Charges from 0-100 in 1.5 hours from AC. I have not tried solar as we are on the Westcoast and it is winter. I wish I had bought the jackery first as it is what I needed. The bluetti was not worth the money is not as sturdy built, weighs more. And you cannot return them unless defective. As a woman in her 60’s I appreciate the compact size and light weight of the jackery.

So far I love this power station. I use it to power my astrophotography gear and this can run everything for an entire night.

    Some great features:
    - Fast charging
    - Quality unit and cabling
    - Solar charging is good, though only 40watts
    - Nice mobile app allows you to see charge and utilization as well as turn ports on and off

My only complaint is that there is a barrel jack to USB-C connector required for the solar charging cable. It is very flimsy and easy to break the way it just out from the USB port when plugged in.
I lifted the cable gently and it easily broke the connector (pictured).

Jackery support was prompt and offered to replace the connector, sadly it's back ordered.
