Outta Sight!
What an awesome cartoon series! I was too young to remember it's original run, but you are automatically sent back into a groovy time period. It's simple,funny and colorful. And full of music. Even children of today will like it.

And now this. After all these years. Finally, the entire series is mine. ;)
Pretty much everybody knows these days that Rankin-Bass produced three animated shows for Saturday morning television along these lines: one for The Beatles, one for The Osmonds, and this one.
Out of the three, this is easily the coolest of the bunch. As much as I've always loved The Beatles, I just could not get into their original Saturday morning cartoon very much; it was drawn terribly plain, it's writing was formulic and goofy, and (the biggest disappointment of all) The Beatles themselves remained unchanged and in their original suit-and-tie look even as the years marched on and the Beatles themselves had obviously grown far more colorful and sophisticated. Likewise, the Osmonds cartoon came across as a copycat of the Jackson five cartoon's approach.
But this cartoon, on the other hand, is something else again! The Jackson 5 - both the group and the cartoon - had come out just as the world was blissfully basking in the afterglow of The Fab Four's gorgeous animated masterpiece "Yellow Submarine" and the resulting emergence of Peter Max and the psychedelic graphic explosion, which was by that point appearing even in commercials, children's programming such as "Sesame Street" and "The Electric Company", and children's books. So as a result, this is easily the most cheerfully psychedelic cartoon to *EVER* be broadcast on Saturday mornings! A terrific collection of eye candy which compliments the kids, their music, and their image at the time perfectly (but then of course it does, Motown co-created it, so obviously they made certain of that!). Sharp eyes will even catch many images lifted directly from "Yellow Submarine" wholecloth, and as far as I'm concerned that's a great thing! You'll even recognize various tips of the hat to R. Crumb along the way. Coupled with the J5's spectacular talent, this is one of the most spirit lifting cartoon experiences you're ever likely to watch.
The other fantastic plus here is that, unlike The Beatles' cartoon - which used embarrassing stand-in actors for the voices - this one is THE REAL THING. Yes, those really ARE the kids themselves supplying their own voices! (coupled with the occasional stand-ins due to time restraints, apparently.) All five of course are in the pilot episode along with special guest Diana Ross, even! So not only does the cartoon work on a purely fun entertainment level (the writing tends to be a notch in quality above the stories for the Beatles and Osmonds shows), it also works as a genuine time capsule of the period both in visual style reflecting what was popular during the time when positivity was a big hit of the day as well as a very precious captured snapshot in time of the Jacksons themselves when they were still at that very tender young age experiencing that first taste of superstardom.
I was surprised of the obvious love and care that was put into this set! Both the box and the insert inside are every bit as delightfully colorful as the cartoon itself, and both DVDs are decorated to look like 45s! Talk about a blast!
There's only one reason why I had to Nick this review one star, therefore keeping it from a full five star rating; in one episode ("Pinestock") during the scene near the beginning after the guys jump out of the plane and are driving along in their car, there are two quick moments wheb the screen suddenly gets very noticeably pixelated. I'm not sure if it's a defect with the DVD I bought or if that's something that just happens to be an error on the original transfer created for the DVD (I know for a fact they weren't present in the original episode).
I'm enclosing a couple of photos from playing said episode to show you what I mean. I womder if anyone else with the set has encountered this?
Other than that, the only other errors you would encounter are from the physical age of the original show (i.e. the occasional crease line of the source tape), which of course are forgiveable considering what a pain it has been to wait for these cartoons to be released all this time.
Apart from what I explained above, by all means... enjoy!

The Jackson 5 first became a hit on the radio when I was only four years old, and I grew up watching this cartoon on every single Saturday morning, and I always cherished it dearly. Since then, the only other times I have ever had the pleasure of re-watching these episodes was when they were briefly rerun on television in 1983 during the height of "Thriller" mania, rerun on MTV when it was temporarily turned into "MJTV" for the release of Michael's then brand-new album "HIStory", and then - if I was lucky - floating around as the occasional YouTube upload.Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2017
