Earle Layser's book on Jackson Hole's early history should sell well to local residents and tourists. As a historian I was impressed with Layser's wide-ranging depth of research. The many short biographies and extended accounts of Jackson Hole incidents were revealing. His conclusions were on point. He didn't romanticize the treatment of frontier life, relations with Native Americans, rough mountain justice, and the wanton killing of elk and other wild life. Given the concurrent destruction of western herds of buffalo, it is a wonder that any elk survived the deadly onslaught in Jackson Hole. I liked the many pictures, and was surprised to see many of the early frontiersmen dressed in coats, shirts and ties. I wondered if the photographers had some coats and ties in their photography studios to loan to their subjects. My bigger surprise was the early effort of the federal government to save and protect some of the surviving elk and to provide elk habitat by buying land and establishing the National Elk Refuge. Layser's book is a quick read as well as a carefully drawn picture of the early settlement of Jackson Hole. John Offner
