This was the first book I read in this series and I fell in love with it. I work in a high school library and I recommended it to some of our readers and they felt as I did. Several of the girls told me they couldn't put in down that they were enjoying it so much. It is a light reading book and I think the young and old alike would enjoy it.

I have read many works of Christian fiction. Some of them were excellent, with compelling storylines, interesting, well-developed characters, suspense, and satisfying conclusions. Others were dull, flat, plotless stories that went nowhere. Unfortunately, this book falls into the second category. I found Lizzie to be as shallow a character as they come, and the whole notion of her returning to her Amish community when her life and her daughter's life are in danger might have worked if there had been some suspense and some believable actions on the part of the other characters. But the suspense was nowhere to be found. Lizzie and Jacob acted like 13-year-olds on a first date even though they were married [albeit under bizarre circumstances]. With all the early talk about Eddie's "thugs" (cliches, anyone?), I expected that they would at least make an appearance and provide some conflict, but they must have been pretty dumb thugs if they couldn't do some investigating and find Lizzie. And why would they expect money from her anyway? That part of the story was so sketchy that I never really understood the relationship. After reading stories from authors like Hannah Alexander, Francine Rivers, and Lauraine Snelling [who, by the way, maintain the Christian feel without preaching or sacrificing what makes a story good], I can't understand why this particular mess was even published. It kind of makes me mad that I even wasted the few hours it took to read it, and I'm very glad I only spent 99 Cents for this sleep-inducing reading experience.

What puzzles me the most is how so many reviewers could give this book four or five stars. With all the excellent books out there, I will not waste my time on another by this author.

Read on if you don't mind spoilers...
Yes, and I'm sorry I had to give it a "1". I'm being honest here. This book seemed to have been written in a few short hours, like a short story some Junior High teacher asked a student to write for a class. It could have been great, with more time, more imagination, more background, more character development... Basically, only the IDEA behind the plot was good. Writing was mediocre or below.
Jacob's daughter (Abby) is not even Jacob's daughter. And for Jacob to be caught up in having to marry her mother (Lizzie) the way it happened was totally unbelievable wrought with lies, and manipulations.
Jacob mourned unshaven for over 13 years for his dead wife, whom he didn't even love. With beard means you're married and not on the market. He decides to finally put this marriage behind him and consider moving on. That very week (unbeknownst to him) Lizzie, his one true love, returns (how convenient that he's back on the market!). Unbelievable.
When Lizzy came back into the community she had Abby, the biological daughter of an Englisher she ran off with. At this point the Elders "decide" that Jacob had sired Abby all those years ago. Without asking for truth, the Elders told Jacob he has to do the right thing and marry her (without any other punishment?) Unbelievable.
Within 1 week, he goes from still mourning, to being betrothed to the woman he yearned for all these years. Unbelievable.
Given a few more weeks of writing to work out plot, history and characters it might have been a believable and complete story. I thought it was a freebie; it should have been. Sadly I did in fact spend $1.99 on it. The cover must have drawn me in... it is cute!
Many freebies I've read have surpassed this one. And now I hear there are more in a series? Not for me. And if this is the way the author continues to write, I'll stick with Dale Cramer, thank you very much.....now THERE'S a writer!!

I found this story to contain many aspects that were very unbelievable. Lizzie is welcomed back in the community by her family, the community members, the Elders and the Bishop just like that after being gone ten years?!? She wasn't shunned? Really?? Jacob marries Lizzie the first day he sees her after ten years with no questions asked? Whadda guy! Eddie's thugs don't do a little detective work and find out where Lizzie went? Guess they didn't want that money after all?

The story line is predictable. Young girl falls in love with young man, problem arises so she leaves, she comes back after many years, the young man, now older, marries her and they live happily ever after. Sounds like a good fairy tale.

I've read many Amish romance novels and found that this story lacked depth of characters, no disciplinary actions by the Bishop and Elders (after running away, having a child and becoming Englisch), no follow-through regarding Eddie's thugs (they just kinda disappeared) and Jacob's actions in regards to marrying Lizzie overly complacent.

I have no plans to read any more books in this series and may not read any more books from this author either. There are much better Amish romance novels out there to be read.
