Well, because as Richard Weaver explained in his eponymous book, Ideas Have Consequences by Weaver, Richard M. 1st (first) Edition [Paperback(1984)]. As Jack Wheeler so masterfully explores in this rich and compelling adventure novel -- the Mexican mind is torn between two warring worldviews, and neither of them is fully its own. No sane Mexican today could stand the idea of demon worship, human sacrifice and cannibalism that characterized (some) American Indian tribes across the Americas, and none more inhumanly ruthless than the Aztec. But Mexico is not Spain, either; and the thought of being merely a conquest of Spanish kings is nothing that any self-respecting Mexican will claim as his/her heritage.
Jack Wheeler introduced me to 'princess' Malinali -- 'La Malinche' -- the savior of Mexico from the ravages of 'Conquista Azteca' that married the indigenous people of Mexico to the highest Christian aspirations of 'plundering' ('civilizing') Spaniards in one of the most fascinating love stories I've ever read.
All my life in Laredo, I saw the street names 'Malinche' and 'Matamoros' but never gave them much thought. Jack Wheeler opened a whole new -- true! -- world of savage temples, committed Christian love, and impossible battles in impenetrable jungles over which I have flown many a time, on my way to SCUBA vacations on the Costa Maya.
What a world, Jack Wheeler. What a heroine! And what an answer to the enigma of the Mexican spirit that does battle with itself, to this very day.
Thank you for a priceless lesson -- not only in Mexican culture and history (thus also economics and future geopolitics), but with application to the similar crisis of conscience in the heart of every American of African descent, who refuses to put away the demons of Africa's past, for fear of losing their 'culture'.
Ideas Have Consequences, Weaver proposed in his book. In this magnificent novel 'The Jade Steps', Jack Wheeler proves the thesis in blood and in committed and selfless love. I thank God that Mr. Wheeler took up this invaluable project. May every aspiring statesman in Mexico read this book...and it will do incalculable good for a President Trump to read it as well, should that transpire.
