Here are some simple recommendations for getting the most life out of your mat. With my first mat, I found that I was always standing on the same side and in the same place, and eventually (after a year) that created a bit of deterioration at the back of the mat where my feet set up in downward dog. With my second mat, I regularly change which end I stand on, and flip it over to use the other side. Both sides of the mat are equally tacky, and by doing this, my second mat is now 2 years old and in still in perfect shape. Also, I regularly washed my first mat in the washing machine, but I think I did it too frequently. With my second mat, I use a tea tree disinfectant after each use, and take it home from the studio to wash about once every 2 months. That routine has kept my mat clean and free of nasties. I have no problems with traction even in 100F rooms.
If you are thinking about buying a Jade yoga mat, just do it! They are seriously awesome (and "the smell" really does go away in short time compared to the life of the mat.)
If you're used to using a cheap-y mat, the first thing you'll notice is that this one is much heavier even though it is thinner. I was concerned because I bike with my mat and frequently carry it around on weekends after yoga, but you'll get used to it and I've never actually noticed the weight since after first buying it.
I also attend hot yoga, so I bought a yogi-toes mat to go over top of this since my hands and feet get slippery. Sometimes I actually find that the mat is MORE slip resistant than the towel!
And as I said before, the actual quality of this is just much better. My cats used to pick at my old plastic one and there would be little chunks of it all over (cats are declawed). But this one does not have the capability to break off into little pieces. It's relatively smooth with a fine texture to aid in slip prevention. I use my mat 2x week for the last 2 years including transport in a bag and slinging it all over the city after class. It shows virtually no signs of wear. When the light its it just right I can tell that it's slightly more dull in the downward dog areas, but that's about it!
The only time I might recommend not getting this mat is if you have very sensitive joints and prefer more cushion. This is definitely a thin mat, but I just fold mine or throw my towel down if I need more cushion.

My dad loves it because it isn't slippery when he sweats. Smells funny at first but that wears off.Published 20 months ago by Oprah Winfrey
