So many subcharacters were introduced into the plot that it was nearly confusing. Of course I understand that the first book in a series has an obligation to present the future main characters but especially at the beginning this was overwhelming.
The plot started with a bang but then faltered and didn’t recover until the end. I think the storyline lacked depth. One incident chased the other but they all remained somehow scetchy and didn’t really offer anything to the plot. On the contrary, at some point I thought that this just added to the confusion of the names.
Personally, I had my doubts how the heroine could overcome so easily what she went through. Although her friends were very supportive I thought that these issues were dealt with too easily...
Anyway, I really wanted to like this book, especially because it started so good but somehow it just didn’t meet my expectations.
This book is very well written and starts out hard and intense. Mary/Edge is used as a pawn and her team compromised. Enter Dylan and his team from Arsenal; previously, competition for Hive, Edge's group. Things are crazy intense with both the feelings between Mary and Dylan, as well as the feelings and PTSD that Mary experiences as a result of the situation in the beginning of the book. (vague, because I don't want to inadvertently add any spoilers).
The characters are well developed, making me hope that Jagged Edge and Sight Lines are just the beginning of the Arsenal series. As the story unfolds, Mary and Dylan's romance intensifies and the action/intrigue surrounding her work on HERA (a system that she created along with best friend Vi, that has serious damage potential). The twist and turns in this book are constant, just when I thought I had something figured out...BAM! Some new clue, or intel comes in to throw me off.
Overall, this is one of my favorite genres of romance. I love a good action/suspense/intrigue story with some hot romance thrown in, and Cara Carnes nails it. I lost a lot of sleep when reading this; why I thought I could start it at 11 pm and read "just a few chapters until I get tired" I have no idea. Definitely didn't happen. I could not put this down...I tried twice, but after tossing and turning for several minutes, obsessing about what was going to happen next, I gave up and just read it through to the end. Get comfy, settle in with some wine (or something harder ;-) ) and tissues...definitely tissues. Enjoy!
Mary and her Partner Vi, along with two other women have come up with a sentient computer program that in the wrong hands could potentially enslave the world, the ultimate big brother is watching.
Mary and Vi join the Mason brothers Security firm, The Arsenal, and offer them their program. They start recruiting the best operatives they have worked with. Mary and her team are being hunted. They are going to need the best to solve, who is targeting them.
Through it all Mary and Dylan are falling for each other.
Great story, fun, fast paced and a little steamy. Loved the Mason brothers and their baby sister. Mary and her team are are strong and intelligent women There are some great secondary characters. This book deals with, torture, and rape, which may be a trigger for some.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book from Booksprout. Loved it, bought it on support of the author. Will read again Looking forward to the next book, Vi 's story.
