From the prologue to the last chapter, Doris grabbed my heart, mind, and soul with her masterful storytelling. Jagged Edges is a love story unlike any I've ever seen or read. Derek is every woman's dream--handsome, wealthy, smart, and perfectly flawed. Arianna, the love of his life, is totally relatable. She's a woman who has been there and done that and has no time for games. Morgan, the other woman caught in this triangle of love, lies, and heartache, is initially an enigma, hard to figure out. Is she in love or is she? Zack, Derek's best friend is a dead ringer for the rapper Common, but comes with childhood demons that run amok, causing havoc for those who love him most.
Told from Derek, Arianna, and Morgan's POV, Jagged Edges is deep and profound. Doris dissects and gets into the hearts and minds of her characters, keeping the readers on the edge of their seats. Will Zack and Arianna make it as a couple? Or Will Morgan be "The One." Each character struggles with their feelings, trust is tested, and lives are turned upside down. I laughed out loud, I sobbed, and I got angry while I hung onto Doris `every melodic word and phrase. A true wordsmith, Doris' writing is riveting. Her words dance across the page with grace and power, keeping you at attention, wanting more, anxious about what will happen next.
Thank you Doris for the journey and the lessons learned. I more than recommend this book!
Arianna is another beautiful woman of means and privilege, but her life has not been perfect. Despite how her parents tried to provide the best life possible for her and her siblings, and to give her every advantage that a life of wealth and privilege offers, they could not stop her from connecting to the wrong man. A man who left her scarred, wary and fearful. Then she met Derek.
After everything comes crumbling at his feet, alone in New York on vacation, Derek meets Arianna and is taken with her immediately. Arianna’s beauty, intelligence and allure capture his attention and refuse to let go. But Arianna is no ordinary girl. Life has taught her hard lessons that she refuses to let go. Derek must either rise up to the occasion or move on. Although he is not a trollop, he has grown used to having things his own way and now has to decide if he will lay aside his old ways in order to gain what he truly wants.
But no love is without its challenges and the same can be said for this group. In their own way, the love they feel is real, but when real life kicks in and adult choices have to be made, the question remains will each continue on in their own selfish, unforgiving, and unbending ways…or will they lay all of that aside and live up to the words that love seeks not its own?
Doris H. Dancy has written this love story beautifully, weaving hard truths and life lessons in each page. It took me a minute to get into this story. The characters were all too perfect, too accomplished, too privileged and I couldn’t bond with them, even though most were really decent people. However, their issues were real. Love is a universal language that touches every person…and that I very well could relate to. Sometimes the heart just wants what it wants and no matter how hard we try, not everyone wins. Choices come with consequences and that we very well must know. Doris’ descriptive writing, at times reads very poetic. Excellent debut.
