About the Author

James Allen (1864–1912) was a British philosophical writer known for his inspirational books and poetry and as a pioneer of self-help movement. His best known work, As a Man Thinketh, has been mass produced since its publication in 1903. It has been a source of inspiration to motivational and self-help authors. Born in Leicester, England, into a working class family, Allen was the eldest of three brothers. His mother could neither read nor write while his father, William, was a factory knitter. In 1879, following a downturn in the textile trade of central England, Allen's father traveled alone to America to find work and establish a new home for the family. Within two days of arriving his father was pronounced dead at New York City Hospital, believed to be a case of robbery and murder. At age fifteen, with the family now facing economic disaster, Allen was forced to leave school and find work. For much of the 1890s, Allen worked as a private secretary and stationer in several British manufacturing firms. In 1893, Allen moved to London where he met Lily Louisa Oram who he then wed in 1895. In 1898, Allen found an occupation in which he could showcase his spiritual and social interests as a writer for the magazine The Herald of the Golden Age. At this time, Allen entered a creative period where he then published his first book of many books, From Poverty to Power (1901). In 1902, Allen began to publish his own spiritual magazine, The Light of Reason, later retitled The Epoch. In 1903, Allen published his third and most famous book As a Man Thinketh. Loosely based on the biblical proverb, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he," the small work eventually became read around the world and brought Allen posthumous fame as one of the pioneering figures of modern inspirational thought. The book's minor audience allowed Allen to quit his secretarial work and pursue his writing and editing career. In 1903, the Allen family retired to the town of Ilfracombe where Allen would spend the rest of his life. Continuing to publish the Epoch, Allen produced more than one book per year until his death in 1912. There he wrote for nine years, producing 19 important works. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I am prejudice towards James Allen. I bought this book because of his book, "As a Man Thinkth". That book is one of the true classics of the "Law of Attraction" genre. I always have it on hand and read passages from it daily as I also do with this book.

I found that maybe the language style this is written in, may be too archaic for today's modern reader. I, myself fully enjoy reading something more poetic. But for this reason, I am sure some will be displeased. This is a shame because I believe when you read past styles of writing, you broaden your own horizons. Plus it would be a loss to not gain wisdom from one of the true and original masters of this genre.

I enjoyed these meditations and I'm sure some will surely benefit from the thoughts introduced here. And since the book is free, it won't hurt to at least try it out. You can always delete it.

Read and I believe you will enjoy.

This book is about continually refining your attitude. Following Allen's guidelines gives me a clear head when emotions tug and pull in unhealthy directions. This book should be read so many times that it sinks into the soul through a willing osmosis.

Despite being written so long ago, James Allen's Meditations are incredibly relevant and insightful in the frenetic 21st century.
If only we all could apply his advice and guidance in our thought and actions as easily as we can read it, there would be an abundance of peace and tranquility in our lives. The book is written from a Christian perspective, but in a way that would probably still appeal to people of other faiths and beliefs.
I think this is a great alternative to a more typical daily devotional and some of the more recent "new-agey" positive thinking literature. Anyone who decides to buy this should also get Allen's "As a Man Thinketh".

Thoughts for meditation for each day of the calendar year including February 29 for leap years. These statements, applied with quiet time for thought, can change your mentality and outlook on life. I think this book was never intended to be finished, since December 31 is finished being read, you continue back to January 1. Infinite reading for infinite positive thought. A great read.

Anything I've ever read by James Allen has had an impact on my "thinkiing." From the book, As A Man Thinketh", to his meditations, there are pearls of wisdom and thoughtful revelations that have helped me throughout most of my adult life. Although my imperfections are readily apparent, my mindfulness has been considerably enhanced. Each and everyone of his books is a lifetime friend that I frequently visit or revisit as the case may be.
