(I was able to finish…and it was edited - grammatically, although the Author could use a good Alpha reader for story line)
Time to Read: 6 days (a REALLY long time for me and when i looked at the size of the book on Amazon - it’s really pretty small. Grrr)
Let’s start with the cover. We all look at covers - let’s face it. And once an image is in your head - forget it!
Really tempted to NOT EVEN BUY THE BOOK, but a friend (who is also a “Street Team” member of the Author) really insisted - and perhaps the cover and the pushy Street Team person tainted my vision of the whole book? Although - I don’t really think so.
IMHO - The cover model looked like an old pervert with a criminal background. Possibly a particular offenders list NO MAN wants to be on.
(not sure if the rumor that the cover model is the author’s actual husband is true or not)
Advice to the author - vet your covers. Don't just use your “yes-ma’am” fans, either.
If I’d judged this book by its cover - I wouldn’t have been off the mark. I felt myself cringing at way too much.
Anyway - I found the Bayou Stix series quick ‘fun’ reads - even though they were not my favorites by a landslide.
But about the BOOK contents….
I found this book difficult to get into from the beginning. The Prologue set up the MMC felt like an arrogant prick - but I went with it.
First section of Chapter 1—I was lost…
The author’s lack of dialogue tags was disorienting.
Fighting those initial paragraphs was gruesome.
I had to read that whole section three times - and never fully “got it” - so i moved on…
From that point forward…
Pedantic story line… (does the author know the first thing about film making or acting?)
Idiotic dialogue… (same as her previous books) - even the Internal dialogue was insufferable.
WAYYYYY to much “internal dialogue” - i actually missed Anastasia Steele’s (E.L. James’) “Inner Goddess”)
Backstory that is just friggin’ “Whuuuuut??”
The cheating was so blatant. (oops! forgot to say Spoiler!) The before, during & after - dreadful.
And the Same ‘Ole Same ‘Ole from Ms. Skye…MMC & FMC not saying what they SHOULD say - everything is a ridiculous exercise in lack of communication, or the lamest of communication. The fans seem to think that the FMC was strong and confident? I didn’t get that vibe from her interactions after the first chapter. Hell - I didn’t fully get it during the first chapter. Once she opens her mouth with the “lady killer” (aka James Black - whom I called James Barf in my head) the game was truly over.
There were a few witty lines… but those moments of literary joy couldn’t save this sad train wreck of a book.
I could see the FMC (the MMC was already ruined by the cover)
Clean writing & editing. I wasn’t constantly struggling with dropped words, or improper sentence structure. (even if it was the worst kind of cheese around)
Ultimately i had to go back and look at the 5s - Hard to NOT miss that most of the reviews are Not Verified Purchases… and were uploaded on the day of release. If someone gave me ANY book, I’d be inclined to give a softer review - therefore I never accept ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies).
Bottom line - I dashed through the rest of the book, unwilling to DNF any book (a personal conviction) and just wanted this one to be over.
The author said in her book, something along the lines that reading and not paying attention to the time is the sign of a good book… to that I say, “Not always.”
I don’t feel that skimming short-cut this repetitive story in any way shape or form.
Next time - I’ll think twice about a cover & buying on release weekend.
I won’t be buying Book 2. I simply don’t care about these characters.
I’ve sat on this review for 48 hours…
As the story begins and James meets his driver, Avangeline "AJ" Price, a smart and sassy woman who refuses to bow down to the handsome movie star, he realizes that he may just have met his match - someone who refuses to put up with his bulls*** and loves to tell him like it is at every turn. At first, James and AJ's animosity for each other is all there is between them, but as they get to know each other and spend more time together, their walls drop a little bit and they start to see what's beneath their hardened exteriors.
Trust is a huge issue for any new couple, but it's essential for AJ because dishonesty is what forced her to construct her walls in the first place, leading her down a path where love wasn't something she would even consider. James has secrets that he holds close to the vest, and he understands what's at stake if they get exposed, but what he never counted on was meeting someone he wanted to tell those truths to and despite the risk and pain it may cause him, he knows he needs to come clean, even if, after the fact, it might cost him everything, including AJ.
I'm a huge Skye Turner fan; I adore her writing and the characters and storylines she creates. I really enjoyed James Black and the ever feisty AJ; the environment Skye stages her story in is also written well, allowing her readers to visual its aesthetics. Where I got a little tripped up in this one is with James' choices and actions towards the end of the book. On a certain level, I get the reasons he does what he does, but I have to admit, it gutted me because AJ gave him her heart freely, which was such a huge step for her, and he risked it all for what really - the past...the memories... But my reaction to the situation also speaks to Skye Turner as a writer because anytime a writer can pull out those kind of emotions from a reader, she does her job and she's done it well.
