From the Manufacturer
Jamo S 426 HCS 3 Home Theater System
Jamo’s long-standing reputation for great value for money in high-performance, highly affordable loudspeaker systems is well-deserved and confirmed once again by the Jamo S 426 HCS 3 surround system. The Jamo secret is simple: thanks to a carefully coordinated and balanced engineering effort, the Jamo S 426 HCS 3 loudspeaker system delivers room-friendly good looks and sound quality that is extremely rare at the modest asking price.
The S 426 floorstanding speakers feature dual 5 ½” bass/midrange drive units in a reflex-optimized enclosure and a low resonance 1” tweeter mounted in a Jamo Waveguide. The result is a punchy, yet refined, and detailed sound that will make your movies and music more enjoyable.
In order to generate a believable three dimensional soundscape to enhance both movies and music, the S 420 CEN center channel and S 420 SUR surround employ the exact same Waveguide mounted tweeter as the S 426 and a 3 ½” version of the S 426 bass/mid unit to achieve consistent, seamless sound from every direction.
To complete the Jamo S 426 HCS 3 system, you can choose a subwoofer from Jamo’s broad range to match your room size, budget and personal preferences. The S 420 SUR and horizontal S 420 CEN include wall brackets for flexible placement and effortless integration with any room.

The sound is crisp, and I'd recommend purchasing a decent subwoofer to go along with this set of speakers. I have my Jamo speakers paired with a very nice Definitive Technology Pro Sub 100 subwoofer that I bought on Craigslist.
For $169.99 (and that includes shipping), these speakers are a steal. The same speakers in black ash run $329.95 on Amazon, and I think the Wenge finish is superior to the black ash finish. The speakers were packed very well. and arrived right on schedule.
Buy & enjoy!!!
My speakers came absurdly well packed in the factory boxing, your mail service could kick it off the back of the truck and my bet is they would still be fine, it looked like the Australian service side had a bit of a go at doing some damage on mine, but gave up when faced with packaging beyond their levels to have any real fun with it.
The finish on the speakers is quite nice, darker grain than the Amazon pics show, a few signs of fast mass production, but really nothing that you would notice once in place. Quality?, well they feel and sound more sold than some would expect, but the main towers are fairly thin MDF for a standing speaker, nothing that would surprise anyone at the price, likewise very thin foam sound linings inside. The grills/covers are quite frail but it's all just stuff you mainly notice during setup, and if your surprised about any of it, remember the price.
Amp setup for me was a mixed bag, I was using the auto setup on my Yamaha 5.1 surround system, and I ran into issues with it accurately tuning the speakers, in the end I found the following issues, one is the EQ tuning kept getting something wrong, switching that off gave better sound, also it kept getting the crossover range for the 'small' front and surrounds wrong, so I manually set it based off the speakers listed specs and it was better. Lastly it uses a set level for sound output testing, and always cranks the center channel/speaker level right down, which for TV shows etc does not work, as speech levels are usually quieter, the Yamaha wants to put like -5 to -3 on the center channel, brining it back to maybe -1 or even 0 brings the dialogue back up to par in most things, maybe this is a fault with the overly small center channel, I'm not sure.
Moving on to the sound in general, overall I'd say it's a very warm and bright feeling sound, quite rounded, lots of highs, strong mids, good mid bass, in fact it kicks quite hard in the upper bass levels in general, given lots of volume some content and music can be very clear and loud, it's fast to react as well, never seems to get easily distorted, this really belies it's selling price, and it's quite likely responsible for why it gets so many good reviews, because they simply sound better than their selling bracket, and more so just sound 'good' even for something beyond that.
It's not all fantastic though, they are limited by sizing, and likely design, I can't help but feel they went a little small on the center channel speaker, and a few have noticed it if you read past reviews, it's maybe not quite as warm feeling as the rest of the system, and lacks some punch to the vocals and dialogue, but then it really is small with the upside being it fits anywhere.
You can also easily criticize the lack of 'true' bass in the system, being lower than maybe typical mid bass response, it's not hard to discover either, I went through my music collection, and almost right away found a few songs where the bass line was almost entirely missing, a good example is "Puretone - Addicted To Bass", to be fair said song will expose lack off bass in near anything, but I found quite a few more songs where bass production was sadly lacking. In all fairness, a couple of 5.5inch speakers were never going to reproduce any real rumbling bass, this really is a system that was made for use with a powered subwoofer.
Use of this system in general seems quite directly aimed at home theater, and it's what I needed, cause I had an old pair of bulky KEF units that did kick ass music at higher volumes, but were truly useless at everything else, 99% of home audio now, for me anyway, is movies/TV shows with lots of gaming thrown in, where it's all about the surround, content being dialogue with tons of mid range sound, and the Jamo does most of this very well, being acceptable for also listening to radio during the day at times.
Actually, having mentioned gaming, I throw in a big thumbs up for general game console usage, for whatever reason this is kind of where the Jamo really seems to shine, if you have a games room for the kids (or yourself), and want something that pairs up well with it, I'd say this is prime value there.
So where does this all tie up to a full final summary and rating?, in Australia where I am, there is nothing that would touch this system for the price, they sell it here with the sub for $1300, if you paid that for it I'm guessing you'd say it was good/solid, with some of that 'good' being the extra punch of the sub, without the sub it's not as impressive, but given the Amazon price it becomes a lot more impressive even without.
It's a system really designed for use with a sub due to it's limited design, yes it's usable without, and still good sound without, but it very much lacks true low end response, you'd still recommend it, as buying a separate sub is no big deal, for me it's a bit of a pain though, as the bulk of the best value for money subs on Amazon won't ship to Australia.
One thing that is a factor which does balance out stuff like lack of bass response, is you'd never keep the size and weight down if you did try to increase bass in a system like this, and the size of the towers is kind of nice and compact (this is subjective), really minor gripe there is a grab handle of some type would have been nice to have on the towers.
Other gripe that I think rings true, regardless of the price, is you can't help but think they could have just upsized the center just a little bit, the pair of 3.5inch could have been bumped to 4.5's and maybe this would have made the center a little louder, with just a touch more depth to the dialogues from it, all while even fitting in the same sized shipping box?
What's in a rating though at the end?, if I had paid something like $800 local (minus $500 I'd guess on the sub), you'd be fair saying they were worth a 3.5 star rating (being a solid good to above average), at what I paid from Amazon being $325 shipped all the way to me in Australia, I feel 4.5 stars is very solid in their value for money, you give or take that half star being that little edge on quality, or that slightly lacking center channel.
I know it's probably almost odd to give what was almost a carbon copy of other reviews, but that is likely because it's one person finding the exact same limitations that another did, which is likely a good thing in terms of reviews...
I would have given these speakers a 5 star rating, but have downgraded 1 star based on the packaging. The speakers arrived on my doorstep in a box so damaged that it appeared to have been carried on the back of an Afghani refugee, he obviously used the box as a shield against numerous IED blasts since the box had numerous holes in it and the foam packing had been rendered into popcorn. Miraculously the speakers were not damaged in any way. However Jamo should double box these speakers to insure that they always arrive in undamaged condition. Packing heavy speakers in light cardboard is not the way to insure intact delivery I just happened to luck out with no damage to the speakers..
