If, as another reviewer says, this book is somewhat hagiographic, it is less so than Ruari McLean's Jan Tschichold: Typographer, but no matter. I approached this book with some trepidation, as some of Cees de Jong's others are a bit overcooked in the design department. This, compared to the likes of de Jong's Sans Serif, is much more restrained and true in spirit — if not always letter — to Tschichold's austere aesthetic. (Tschichold may have been taken aback by the strange combination of asymmetric text blocks and centered headings.) The reproductions of Tschichold's work are superbly printed and of a generous size. This volume contains the most comprehensive collection of his film posters I have found, as well as many archival photos I have not seen before. Still, the best book on Tschichold remains Christopher Burke's Active Literature: Jan Tschichold and New Typography. (It should go without saying that the English translation of Tschichold's 1928 textbook-cum-manifesto, The New Typography — preferably in hardcover — is essential.)

For those with only a passing acquaintance with Tschichold, this will flesh out one of the most important graphic designers of the twentieth century. However, for those who have spent more time researching this continually developing field of art history this book will feel a little bit too... hagiographic.
