About the Author

Jane Austen was born in 1775 at Steventon, Hampshire. She was the seventh child of the local rector, and her life was by modem standards uneventful. In 1801 she moved with her parents to Bath, but returned to Hampshire when her father died, settling in the village of Chawton. She remained there until 1817, when she moved to Winchester to be within easy reach of her doctor. She died that year, aged forty-one and is buried in Winchester Cathedral, which also contains a plaque to her memory. Four of her novels were published anonymously in her lifetime; two more, one of which was Persuasion, appeared posthumously. She never married.

The illustrator, Hugh Thomson (186o-192o), was born in Coleraine, County Londonderry. He sprung to fame as the illustrator of Coaching Days and Coaching Ways, and his delightful nostalgic line drawings were much influenced by Randolph Caldecott. In tum, his work influenced other artists, especially C.E. and H.M.Brock. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She lived with her family at Steventon until they moved to Bath when her father retired in 1801. After his death in 1805, she moved around with her mother; in 1809, they settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire. Here she remained, except for a few visits to London, until in May 1817 she moved to Winchester to be near her doctor. There she died on July 18, 1817. As a girl Jane Austen wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her works were only published after much revision, four novels being published in her lifetime. These are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma(1816). Two other novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1818 with a biographical notice by her brother, Henry Austen, the first formal announcement of her authorship. Persuasion was written in a race against failing health in 1815-16. She also left two earlier compositions, a short epistolary novel, Lady Susan, and an unfinished novel, The Watsons. At the time of her death, she was working on a new novel, Sanditon, a fragmentary draft of which survives.

Contains the typo-full version of P&P

This review is for the complete novels ebook by Book House Publishing. The description says "newly updated" which I guess means they took a red pen to Austen's work and made "corrections", or just as likely, they went to Project Gutenberg and picked the P&P version with edits and published it, instead of the original. It's littered with typos and nonsensical fixes (eg woman vs women, broke vs broken, Millar vs Miller).

My dogs ate my original copy of this edition and I was really excited that this version was still in print and for a decent price. It's a big, heavy volume that may not work for everyone. The font size isn't super small, but may be slightly smaller than your average book.
If this copy is anything like my original one, it holds up well to multiple readings and is flexible right out of the box. I like how the front and back cover have a folded piece that will work for a quick bookmark if I need to set it down briefly. The page width intentionally varies so some pages stick out a little further than others rather than looking like a smooth block of paper.

I do not have one complaint! If you're looking for a collection of all her novels in one book, this is the version to get. Obviously, with six novels (and also her other work, Lady Susan, included), this is a large book. But it's just the right size for what it is and lays open very nicely. And the rough, uneven edge of the pages is a really nice touch. People have left reviews complaining of the small text... it's not too small by any means. Unless you have bad eyesight. I've read several books that have had much smaller text than this. If you're the kind of person who delights in the feel of a nice quality paperback in your hands, this is for you. Definitely great, great quality. An essential for any true Austen fan. I absolutely love it and will be reading it for years and years to come. Oh, and it is such a huge bargain compared to buying each novel separately (even just in paperback). Get one!

This edition is pure Jane Austen. Once you are past the introduction, there are no footnotes, no annotations, no nothing, except the magnificent expanse of the author's words. There is nothing to take you out of the worlds she creates. Occasionally I couldn't live without an explanation of a word or phrase, but there is plenty of help online-- Austen sites with glossaries, etc. The physical book itself is beautiful. Satin cover surface, with image of layers of delicate Regency papers. No matter where you are in the book, you can set it down on its spine and it lays open without stress. The whole look and feel of it is like the quality of Austen's writing-- gracious, relaxed, and whole.

It is a very attractive design, except that the picture on the front is a little risque. I would preper a picture less... provocative. I cannot wait to read it! I am a huge Austen fan! How convenient to have seven books in one! That saves money and bookshelf space! I've already read all of the seven novels it contains, except for Lady Susan. Austen is amazing. If you haven't read her, then purchase this book! Read it! Delight is contained within these pages!

I already have a complete all-in-one set of these classic novels, but it is over 50 years old and the binding is falling apart every which way. I desperately wanted to replace my (huge) collection with another all-in-one that included "Lady Susan." My husband bought this for my for Christmas, and it's exactly what I wanted! Yes, it's big and clunky, but I knew that because I already had my other copy. If you want a small book to read in the bath, I would buy each novel individually. As a complete set, this is perfect!

I was looking for an edition of Austen's collected works that fit well in my hands, and this fits the bill. The pages are crisp, clean and the typeset is quite handsome (rather easy on the eyes). It isn't too heavy or bulky and the pages don't unknowingly flail out of place--causing you to lose your spot. For the layperson, the introduction is an added benefit, but if you're smart you'll just skip right to desert and dive into Austen.

On a side note: My copy has been through quite the beating. Several cherry danishes were inadvertently smashed into the pages, a glass of water was spilled and to top it all off: I dragged it all around the Americas while traveling this summer. So, believe it or not--it still looks brand new.

I found them to be most entertaining, but prefer the books as they obviously have more content. I would highly recommend this collection, as I myself, have taken hours of pleasure from their pages.

This is a wonderful item, given that so much of Austen's work comes at once for relatively so little money, but unfortunately the appallingly poor transfer means that there are serious annoyances on nearly every page. Austen's spelling is notoriously non-standard and that is just fine, but there is no excuse for examples such as "be" instead of "he" and "my" instead of "by" - and a host of other irritations which on their own are very minor, and en mass are very major. After a bit you start to look for them instead of enjoying the humour and the writing. An awful shame.

About 50 years ago I studied Jane Austen's Persuasion for English Literature O Level but could not get really very interested in it but I felt that as these books are classics I should really try again and this time I found them absolutely fascinating reading. I am intrigued by the way of life in what is now a bygone era. The etiquette surrounding not only everyday life but the way romances were conducted is so alien to today's society that it makes for the kind of reading where once you have started a book you have great difficulty putting it down until you reach the end. I realize the writing is a bit old fashioned but you find yourself totally absorbed in the web of intrigue.

With audio books the voice is so important and these readings are perfect. Lovely mellow tones fit beautifully with Austens subtle writing and wit and its just the perfect combination.

Relaxing and so enjoyable, I heartily recommend this product to anyone who loves Jane Austen, and anyone who wants to re-live their childhood by listening to someone reading out loud.

This product would definitely be my choice for taking with me to a deserted Island....
