The novel begins with Jane unexpectedly becoming her aunt Rose's sole caretaker. Rose has had multiple mental health diagnoses throughout her life including schizophrenia and OCD. Ms. Polcastro brings this character's journey to life and not only captures the reader's sympathies, but creates a truly endearing woman, who happens to be schizophrenic.
I found Jane to actually be more difficult to "figure out". Without trying to give too much away, let's just say that her way of escaping the pressures of caring for her aunt (and herself?) involve lots of drugs and risky sexual escapades with men and women. Now while this does lend itself to some pretty damn hot scenes, it seemed to me like the book really started dragging about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through. Thankfully it had a strong ending with a slight ( I figured it out ahead of time, maybe it would be more shocking to other readers) twist which definitely had me going back over my preconceived notions of the cause and effects of mental illness.
Jane. is an excellent novel that delves into mental illness and the stigma surrounding it.
I received a copy of this novel for free in exchange for my honest review.
