My newest novel, A One-way Cruise to Africa, Terror on the Internet, is a cautionary tale for New Adults about possible dangers online. It begins like this: Maku, a rebel leader somewhere in the middle of the dark jungles of Nigeria, has just placed an order for a young woman, Anney Oakes, who lives in the United States. It was easy. He did it all with his i-Pad. He orders, pays and sells all his women this way—over the Internet—without ever having to leave his Hummer.
This suspense/romance story addresses the growing problem of human sex-trafficking, but is suitable for New Adults (ages 18-30 years) and up. This novel is finished and the cover is done, but it isn't on Kindle yet. I have a hard time letting my projects go. Soon. Maybe next week...
If we haven't met yet, I'm an Indie writer of literary, character-driven books, plays, and short stories with humor and heart. In my books, you'll find no F-bombs or sex scenes that make you cringe. I promise! That said, I have written some humorous romances. I've always been fascinated with the relationships between people.
Spring is on the way, but if it's too early to plant your peas where you are, here are some of my bestsellers to keep you company:
Boogie, Boots, & Cherry Pie—a light, humorous romance (“Kiss me, I have cherry pie on my lips!”) Paperback & Kindle. Suitable for most.
Custer & His Naked Ladies—a modern Western--Sometimes, Naked Ladies are just old women in capri pants…and Custer is just an old yeller dog…the 3rd book in my Turtle Trilogy but it stands alone. Paperback & Kindle. Suitable for most. Note: "Naked Ladies" are a flower in Oklahoma (ain't nothing dirty going on here!).
Bears in the Hibiscus—a light starting-over romance with a sexy Montana Park Ranger who thinks there might be Bears in the Hibiscus during a Hawaiian vacation. Paperback & Kindle. Some mildly sexy content. Romance/humor. Suitable for most.
There’s a Mouse in the House!—a collection of short stories and poems to be read to children 2-6. The trailers are YouTube favorites! The four book trailers for the stories have over 16,000 views. Kids love them! The book is Kindle only. A favorite with Worldreader readers in Africa, China, and India!
The Slum Resort, a novella (around 25,000 words), is a good read (Kindle only). Suspense/humor. Suitable for YA and up.
If you haven’t read My Turtle Trilogy yet, this 3-parter will keep you entertained until the frost is off your front porch: A Three-Turtle Summer, As Brown As I Want: The Indianhead Diaries, and Custer & His Naked Ladies.
Also, I’ve recently added three new short stories to my Amazon book page: Escape to Laredo, my first Western short story; Harpy & Julianne's Tomato War; and Old Joe's Pink Cadillac. All are Kindle only. All three are suitable for all.
I love to read as much as you do; one of the perks of writing is that I can explore my interests in marine biology, anthropology, and archaeology and call it research. I call the whole research process my Briar Patch, and I think Uncle Remus would approve. Then, I can weave bits of the science and history into my stories and call it work!
Visit me on YouTube! Most of my books and short stories have a YouTube video. Some of them are posted on the right. If one is missing, you can find them by searching Janelle Meraz Hooper on YouTube. I had fun making these trailers by hand; they're kind of like one of those homemade mufflers you get from Aunt Agnes at Christmas...only they're a lot shorter! I hope you'll give them a look. As you view them, you'll notice I'm not a formula writer; I write each story in the style that's best for that particular story, so each one is different. Remember, I'm an independent! (:
