Wings of Eagles is based on my daughter's hand-written journals begun when she was fourteen years of age. It documents her life dream and career devoted to becoming an airline pilot when women were not yet accepted as First Officers for the major airlines.
In 1978 that dream was fulfilled with Sari March Schnepf became the first female First Officer (copilot) for Air New England. Then came a succession of flying for small commuter airlines and finally, in 1981, Sari became the first female pilot hired by Pacific Southwest Airlines among 550 men. She subsequently flew for USAir when that airline merged with PSA.
Sari's husband sent me her journals in 2004, two years after she passed away from Lupus. As an historian I realized how significant my daughter's experiences were at the dawn of this breakthrough for women in the 1980s. We have books written on Amelia Earhart and Sally Ride but neither one of these women were airline pilots. Hence, Wings of Eagles.
