About Janine Marsh
I’m a British writer living in the middle of nowhere rural France, with 72 animals and a husband.
It wasn’t always this way! On a freezing cold day in February 2004 something happened to me that changed my life. On a booze cruise to Calais, I fell in love with a run down old barn about an hour’s drive inland – and I bought it for less than the price of a very posh handbag. Eventually I moved there (it’s a long story of love, loss and taking a risk). I gave up my office job and became a writer.
It started with a blog called The Good Life France (my friends said I was like Felicity Kendall in the TV series, giving up the rat race to try to live a self-sufficient, if mud-filled, lifestyle). I wrote about the things I saw, the people I met and the places I visited. It started as a fun way to keep friends up to date with my new life and the enormous renovation job we’d taken on. When other people started to read it I was thrilled. The blog grew and grew, I was like Forest Gump, I just couldn’t stop writing! And my audience grew and grew too.
From here I started to write for magazines and newspapers, I travel all over France discovering off the beaten track places, falling in love with cities from Paris to Bordeaux, meeting interesting people and getting to learn all about my adopted country, the food and wine (I’m permanently on a diet), the language, history, traditions and the quirky side of life in France - if not downright odd (like jam filled cakes that are meant to look like the gouty finger of a long dead emperor – seriously!).
I grow most of my own fruit and veg and I’m the maid to umpteen stray cats and dogs, chickens, geese and ducks (one year we had 52 ducklings hatch). I am a total sucker for animals!

Following on from her hugely popular books, My Good Life in France and My Four Seasons in France, ex-pat Janine Marsh shares more heart-warming and entertaining stories of her new life in rural France.
Since giving up their city jobs in London and moving to rural France over ten years ago, Janine and husband Mark have renovated their dream home and built a new life for themselves, adjusting to the delights and the peculiarities of life in a small French village.
Including much-loved village characters such as Mr and Mrs Pepperpot, Jean-Claude, Claudette and the infamous Bread Man, in Toujours la France! Janine also introduces readers to some new faces and funny stories, as she and Mark continue their lives in this special part of northern France. With fantastic food, birthday parties, rural traditions old and new - Jean-Claude introduces snail racing to the village - and trouble with uninvited animals, there is never a quiet moment in the Seven Valleys.
One grey dismal day, Janine Marsh was on a trip to northern France to pick up some cheap wine. She returned to England a few hours later having put in an offer on a rundown old barn in the rural Seven Valleys area of Pas de Calais. This was not something she'd expected or planned for.
Janine eventually gave up her job in London to move with her husband to live the good life in France. Or so she hoped. While getting to grips with the locals and la vie Française, and renovating her dilapidated new house, a building lacking the comforts of mains drainage, heating or proper rooms, and with little money and less of a clue, she started to realize there was lot more to her new home than she could ever have imagined.Ten years ago, Janine Marsh decided to leave her corporate life behind to fix up a run-down barn in northern France. This is the true story of her rollercoaster ride, in many ways a love story, with her sharp observations on the very different way of life, culture and etiquette of France.
From her early struggles and homesickness through personal tragedy, to her attempts to become self-sufficient and to breed 'the fattest chickens in the village', Janine learned that there was more to her new home than she could ever have imagined.
A little over ten years ago, Janine Marsh and her husband Mark gave up their city jobs in London to chase the good life in the countryside of northern France. Having overcome the obstacles of starting to renovate her dream home - an ancient, dilapidated barn - and fitting in with the peculiarities of her new neighbours, Janine is now the go-to expat in the area for those seeking to get to grips with a very different way of life.
In the Seven Valleys, each season brings new challenges as well as new delights. Freezing weather in February threaten the lives of some of the four-legged locals; snow in March results in a broken arm, which in turn leads to an etiquette lesson at the local hospital; and a dramatic hailstorm in July destroys cars and houses, ultimately bringing the villagers closer together.
With warmth and humour, Janine showcases a uniquely French outlook as two eternally ambitious expats drag a neglected farmhouse to life and stumble across the hidden gems of this very special part of the world
