Terrible, tunneling bad, sounds like a tractor when running, multiple issues

- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2024I just love this machine. Took me a few months to get up the courage to open the box, and I'm sorry it took me so long. I just love this machine. Owner's manual settings worked perfectly for the 3-needles top stitching/coverstitch and the back box looking stitches are fabulous. Trying to talk myself into using just 2 needles which is traditional 'coverstich' look but frankly, I love the 3 thread look so much, so far I am staying with it. I love this thing, great compliment to my serger and definitely kicks up my garments a couple more notches. And easy to use, basically the machine sews itself while I guide the edge along the included seam guide. The end result is nearly breathtaking in its appearance and the simplicity with which I achieved it. You need this machine.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2017This machine is amazing! I did a lot of research before purchasing, and I'm confident I made a good choice. It was either this or the Brother, and what ultimately made the big difference is the free arm option and the wider neck space between the needles and body of the machine that Janome offers and Brother doesn't. The machine came threaded and ready to use, no need to adjust tension or install needles. I love the extra needles that came with the bonus pack! I haven't used the needle threader yet, but I'll give it a try sometime.
I've used this machine on lots of different weights and types of knit fabric, and it handles beautifully on all. It does take some practice on very lightweight knits to not have the tunneling, but practice first on scraps and adjust the tension as needed.
This machine makes hemming and topstitching garments so smooth and easy. The only thing I wish they would have included is the clear presser foot so you can see where your beginning stitches are when sewing in the round. I purchased it separately on Amazon for about $30, so it wasn't a big deal. I've only had it for a couple weeks, so I can't comment on durability, but it seems very sturdy, well-made, and reliable.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2024Very easy to use. May not use it a lot but when I need it is great to have on hand! The stitch quality is as good as ready to wear.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2024I am not a professional. I'm just a beginner sewist. I love this machine because it sews so smoothly. it makes a nice hem with a professional look.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2023The machine was easy to thread and as an experienced serger owner, it was a dream to thread. I have used it for about three weeks so far and have found nothing to dislike. It is a great machine that does what it's supposed to.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2022I’ve now owned this machine since Oct 2021 and have spent hours upon hours trying to get it to do what I expect it should. I want it to sew slinky knits and T-shirt jersey. It doesn't. It tunnels the fabric bad to the point where the needle threads are almost touching each other. I’ve been told I should use stabilizer to sew knits- HUH? I got this to avoid stabilizer. I’ve changed needles, changed thread, changed tension, changed fabric, rethreaded the machine multiple times, used 2 needles instead of 3., changed the presser foot tension, sewn fast and slow, changed stitch length, changed the differential feed and anything else people have suggested. Watched every video I could find on youtube. Nothing has resolved the issues completely.
The Janome Coverpro CPX1000 is by far the worst sewing machine I own. It sounds like a Caterpillar tractor when sewing. It tunnels single layer t-shirt fabric no matter what I try. When I manually pull thread thru the tensioning system, I can feel it is uneven going from tight to looser every few inches. The looper threading is baffling at the little hidden spring below the tension knob before the thread goes to the three center looper take-up bars. The instructions are extremely unclear at this critical threading area.
At 4 tension on all needle threads and ZERO on the looper, the stitching almost lays flat on single layer jersey fabric. The tension switch makes little difference, right is loose, left is tighter as it engages another small spring. I can't believe the looper thread scrapes over the edge of the flat metal spring. If you pull the thread too hard at the spring when threading, it can jump behind the spring, then there is no spring function. You can run the machine with the door open and watch the spring to make sure it is pulsing back and forth while sewing (I know weird there is no safety off switch if the door is open but there isn't). My $100 Singer runs smoother and sews better than this, the Juki Serger MO1000 is a dream machine. Neechi, Bernette and Sailraight are all better designed and run smoother than the Janome Coverpro.
The instructions are bad. There are numbers and letters in the description for threading for the same components. The letters don't appear on the diagrams but are in the text. At the critical looper spring there is virtually NO instructions on how to get the thread in the correct spot. All Janome says is take it back to your dealer. Huh, I bought it from Amazon and the Amazon warranty support says "Talk to the manufacturer" This is not the kind of quality I normally see from Japanese products. If you are considering a Janome Coverpro 1000, I recommend looking elsewhere.
Other things about the CoverPro 1000CPX that disappoint me:
The single LED light near the presser foot illuminates the needle area poorly.
The presser foot lifter lever is so close to the presser foot that I can barely get the tip of my finger between them to lift the foot.
The only way the thread fully releases is to hold the presser foot lever up in the maximum position. If I just place the lever up, the thread doesn’t release completely. The instructions even say to lift it all the way up and hold it while cutting the threads. To me this means it is a known design flaw.
Getting the thread to release off the looper requires a force close to the breaking strength of the thread. There are rough edges along some of the guides that the thread goes around near the looper causing this issue.
The castings on the inside have heavy sanding marks where thread lint collects and it just looks cheap to have unfinished precision parts inside.
There is no tool storage inside the cover like the Juki has.
Turning the handwheel manually, I can feel binding in about 60 percent of the stroke and the mechanisms move in a stick-slip motion. I had the same issue with the Sailright, so I oiled it and let it run by itself with no thread for 24 hours. The Janome is now running without thread with a box on the foot pedal. It sounds much quieter without thread and no fabric. Hope it lasts 24 hours.
The foot pedal cord barely reaches the floor from standard table height.
BTW this is an old design cover-stitch machine, it has been around since the early 2000s. The 2000CPX came out in 2007. I bought mine in Oct 2021 because I didn't know any better. Now you do, don't make the same mistake I did.
Janome Warranty requires that the machine be purchased from an Authorized Dealer listed on their website. The Amazon Dealer I bought from is not on the list.
Warranty wording: “This warranty is void - that is, the Product was purchased without warranty - if you did not purchase it from an authorized Janome dealer within the United States. A list of authorized Janome dealers within the United States is available by zip code on our website janome-com. This warranty will be honored only when the original invoice or sales receipt indicating the date of purchase, the product type and authorized Janome dealer's name is presented together with the defective product.”
I’m so sad and disappointed I bought this machine. What’s funny is in my research trying to get this thing to work I found many people have the same experience as me while there are others that say they love the machine and it works great. Maybe I got a lemon and there is a high percentage of lemons.
11-28-2023 I disassembled the machine and discovered the problem. The loop spring I complained about most was mounted incorrectly inside the case. The only way to get to this is pull all of the covers off.
I also lubricated the machine and put a brick on the foot pedal with no thread in the machine and let it run for 2 days to smooth out the rubbing parts causing friction. I can now say it makes a decent cover stitch without tunneling but the other issues remain. Still noisy, still hard to end the stitch and pull the thread to cut. I added 15 more LED lights so now I can see. At least it works properly after finding the root cause - a manufacturing defect. Not suppose to happen in Japan. Instructions are still lacking. Glad I figured it out, took more than a year. I've spent more time working on the machine than using it. I wouldn't buy again because of the quality. It is nowhere near the perfection of my Juki MO-1000 serger. Not changing my star rating either. There is no support if you buy this online. If you really want this, buy it from a dealer near you so you can take it back and get it working.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2017Nice machine. I have a serger that can also do cover stitch and chain stitch and it is a pain to change from serging to cover stitching. I had looked at this machine for a couple of years and finally decided to take the leap and buy it. I am pleased with how easy it is to use after reading the instructions and watching the video I was ready to go. This machine makes my sewing a pleasure and that is what I was going for as this is hobby for relaxation and fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2018I received my machine on May 16, 2018. It arrived well packaged and as expected. This machine is ready to sew right out of the box, just plug it in and go. I was amazed at how easy it is to thread as well as how well it sews! Much quieter than my serger and handles very smoothly. I love the work space on the machine bed. The stitching is beautiful. There are multiple videos on Youtube to teach you the basics such as locking in the threads. I'm giving it a four just because I think Janome should include a clear foot with the machine. This seller is awesome with prompt shipping.
