First of all, this machine is so darn cute. It's a real eye-catcher and the girls in her sewing class all look at it longingly LOL. I could have bought my daughter any number of machines, but when comparing functions, they all seemed fairly similar amongst leading competitors and had similar price points. I settled on this one in particular because of the special memories I felt it would bring her. Everytime she looks at it when she is older I imagine she will have fond memories of her very first sewing machine being a pink, Hello Kitty machine and I get a warm feeling knowing I was able to buy something really special like this. Toys and stuffed animals will pass from memories, but SEWING, this is a lost art and skill that I really hope to foster in her. I felt really good purchasing it because it is a Janome, which is a brand that seems to have a solid, long-standing reputation. Even as she becomes more skilled in her sewing, this machine will still be able to serve her needs for a very long time. In spite of the cuteness factor, it has lots of functionality that even an experienced sewist will appreciate using. I am very thankful for all the reviewers and bloggers, especially the long-time sewists that took their time to write a review about this particular model and how it is every bit of a good machine for everyday use even for experienced sewists. I felt very confident in making this purchase because of those reviews.
As for ease of using the machine, you should first know that I personally know very little about sewing and had my own machine for over 10 years collecting dust because I couldn't figure out how to use it. I am beginning to learn along with my daughter, though! The good news, is that if you've used one sewing machine and understand some minimum mechanics, you can also learn how to use another entirely different branded machine with relative ease. You might need to wind the bobbin or thread the machine differently, but I was able to figure it out thanks to YouTube videos. Thank God for YouTube! I was not able to find exact videos for this particular model, but there are enough Janome models out there that are similar to this machine in basic mechanics, I was able to find what I needed to get started. I will also note that the manual is mostly easy to understand, but I needed a visual. The manual for this machine was certainly easier to use than the one for my Viking that always left me scratching my head and running to YouTube in the first place.
Myself and my daughter actually found many components of winding the bobbin, loading the bobbin and threading the machine far easier to do with this Janome than my Viking. We have found in using the machine a little bit that we have far less issues than we had with my Viking, too. This machine is so much more reliable and easier to use, with far less frustrations, that I frequently want to steal this machine and use it instead of my Viking! We had frequent issues of jamming with my Viking in spite of being cleaned out well and the tension seeming right. Even the stitches seem nicer with this Janome. While my Viking is a tank and workhorse that will last decades and decades, it also cost 4 times the price as this Hello Kitty Janome. And, the Viking has always been a headache to use, no matter what we are doing. When you are learning to sew, you want a machine that actually works like you expect and doesn't produce loads of headaches. For the basic projects my daughter and I like to complete, the Janome is definitely winning out so far.
This model might be retired/retiring at this point, but if you still find a retailer holding onto one or find a used one, it just might be worth the purchase! So far, between the 2 of us - mother and daughter - we wholeheartedly give it 4 thumbs up!
So my daughter might never see the machine, but that speaks for its quality.
And it looks very cute! I think it's appropriate for an 8 year old +
simplicity of the machine the fact it will take being moved here there and everywhere!
Easy wonderful little machine!
