When sewing, this machine feels relatively solid. It didn't move around (even though it's light weight). No it's not 35 lb vintage singer but it held it's ground and wasn't "creeping" around the table or anything like that.
I also really like the way you select the stitch #, width and length and how you can see what everything is set on. I've used many many different sewing machines and this one is relatively basic, but works well and is easy to change settings.
The bobbin winder, even though is made of cheap plastic worked fine. I'm not sure how long this will last. So I was happily sewing along and decided to sew some stretchy knit fabric. First, this was not so good. The presser foot presses way too hard on the knit fabric and so it didn't feed right and stretched it all out. I think this can be remedied with a walking foot...but I didn't have one to try, YMMV. I could not see any way to make the foot pressure less.
The heavy pressure on the fabric was not a deal-breaker for me.Read more ›
It is beautiful and a full sized machine. Runs quiet and has a bright light. I love the semi-electronic style and the ease of the directions as well! She will get the best of both worlds on this machine :)
This machine I am confident will last until my daughter can buy her own!
Update from 2/10/14:
So my craft room was unusually cold this winter and I did not want to lug my Designer 1 into my living room. So, I used/stress tested my daughters Hello Kitty machine instead for my cosplay endevor. This machine dished out some serious crafting time with me and I am MORE thoroughly pleased with it!
I was sewing my first pair of pants, hoodie, backpack, hat, and a skirt design I revisited from scratch. This machine took heavy wool fabric, stretch fabric, felt, and cotton folded at least 4 to 6 times in some of the seem areas just fine. I worked with this Janome for about 15 hours straight and I still have no complaints to offer about it. It is a full sized machine, and about as heavy as any other machine of comparible size.
I love my Designer 1 workhorse, and no this machine does not out do my machine at all, but I'm VERY happy with my purchase. It also helps to know that the same companies (Janome and Huskvarna from what I'm told by the repair stores I threw my thousand questions at) had a hand in both of these machines manufacture, so I feel I can trust this one very much.Read more ›
My white cat (via my spouse) gave me this sewing machine for the holiday because I had been wanting a lightweight machine to take to take classes and "sew days". I have beautiful, well-running Singer Featherweights, but I wanted something with a few more options.
The cute factor in this machine is high, but I was not sure what to expect from it. These Hello Kitty trademarked machines are not sold, it seems, through regular Janome dealers ( I also use a Janome MC8900 and so I asked my dealer) and so I a a bit skeptical.
I am very impressed! The machine is cute but it also is very well made and it's sturdy- but lightweight enough to easily tote around. It runs smoothly out of the box and it seems to have to the usual "Janome purr". The button hole works fine and the stitch selection is more than adequate for a class machine. Included is a very good instruction manual, a few bobbins, a couple of feet and the buttonholed. Everything that you need to start sewing right away. It has the standard Janome, top loading, bobbin which works very well despite being made of a high quality plastic. The bobbin winder is also made from the same plastic material, but is sturdy enough that I think it will last a long time without problems.
I did have to buy a shank and the quarter inch foot, but I was thrilled that they were available for this machine. If you happen to get the machine ask your dealer to order the parts for you and have the model number (18750) handy when you call or go into the store. I had originally thought that I wanted the less expensive, but slightly cuter HK model, but I am very happy that "my cat" chose this, upgraded, model instead.Read more ›
