The manual is very well written, though I wish there was a section for each language rather than having one page for English and then the opposite page with translations in Spanish and French. Setting up was a breeze, with my first bobbin winding and needle threading done in about five minutes. Oh, and the automatic needle threader is great, very easy to use, though people with vision problems might have issues finding the little wire piece that threads the needle itself. Stitch selection is also very easy, the LCD screen is bright enough but not distracting, and the halogen light is perfect for seeing your work. I did some practice stitches on some muslin, and all the stitches were very even and the tension was set perfectly out of the box. And boy, is this machine quiet! On a side note: I noticed that the manual said that oiling is not recommended, just periodic cleaning with very clear instructions listed.
In conclusion, this machine seems to be very sturdy and well-constructed, and I would wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a reasonably priced sewing machine that is still constructed with quality components. I'll update my review if there are any changes.
Update 04/27/13: This machine is still running strong. Absolutely no issues during construction of numerous garments and other home projects. No tension problems or stitch issues. Have bought a couple extra janome brand presser feet and have been pleased with how they work on the machine. Still recommend with no reservations!
The features include fifty stitches, one-step buttonholes and decorative stitches plus needle-up-down memory, which is a feature I consider a MUST-HAVE on a sewing machine. The needle-up-down lets you tell the machine to stop with the needle either up or down. When you stop with needle down, you can pivot on a corner or a stitch design and the fabric is held in place by the needle. Once you've tried this, you'll never want to be without it.
Fifty stitches include 24 Heirloom Stitches and 6 Satin Decorative Stitches. There are three buttonholes. The decorative stitches include the star stitch (small "asterix" stitches that make a good edging for applique or patchwork.) That's why the machine is in the "Decor" series. The decorative stitches are particularly good for imitating heirloom handsewing on children's clothing, or doing quilt and applique. I use the feather stitch and the star stitch a lot.
This machine differs from the Janome DC1050 Computerized Sewing Machine in that it has SFS (Superior Feed System, a seven-part feed dog that feeds fabric evenly and with fewer jams.) It also comes with a walking foot, a 1/4 inch foot (for sewing narrow allowances frequently used in quilting) and a hard cover, which is unusual these days. So this is a good machine for quilters on the go.
50 stitches, including 3 buttonholes
Up/Down needle position buttons
Stitch number, width, and length buttons
Direct stitch selection buttons
Fully Automatic sensor buttonhole
Convertible free arm for circular sewing
SFS (superior feed system)
Built-in needle threader
Reverse Stitch button
Speed control slider
There are sufficient features on this model to make it a solid choice for a do-all sewing machine. If money is tight, the Janome DC1050 will do almost everything this machine does (but no walking foot, quarter inch foot or hard cover.) I prefer this model due to the SFS system which really makes a difference in sewing well, and the extra accessories are worth quite a bit. If you are a novice quilter, this could really be an excellent choice. If you sew a lot of children's clothes or do home decor items, this would be good as well.
