WHY I UPGRADED: My 12 year old Singer was giving me problems. (By the way, I hardly touched it until I began using it liberally this year. It was a finicky machine and I was done.) I chose the Janome (after researching the Husqvarna machines, which had many terrible reviews and high prices.). The reviews were nearly perfect for the Janome 2012, which is the exact same model of this 2014. Here are my opinions:
COLOR: I never liked the purple, but I was willing to look past that to get a great experience.
SETUP: I recommend downloading the manual and reading it if you are planning on ordering this model so that you can get a head-start. I jumped right in thinking that I could figure it out. Not a great idea.
SEWING: This machine sews like a dream. Even when I didn't have it threaded perfectly, which resulted in uneven stitches, the machine eased into the sewing and was much quieter than my previous Singer. I eventually threaded the machine properly and got the results I was looking for. However, it does make a whirl sound when sewing full-speed,
STITCHES PER INCH: The only way I could examine stitches per inch is to tell you that on full speed, it sews about an inch a second (One One-Thousand, Two One-Thousand, Three ...)
SPEED CONTROL: I like it. The speed control bar slides from minimum to maximum. Take note that there aren't any locking knotches on the slide bar so you can adjust the bar wherever you like. The important thing to note is that whatever speed you choose is the MAX speed, not the minimum speed. So even if you put the bar to the maximum level, you can still control the speed with the foot pedal and sew slowly. If you step all the way on the foot pedal at maximum speed, the Janome always starts sewing its first few stitches slowly and ends slowly.
REVERSE STITCH BUTTON: It took some getting used to, but now I like it. Take note that if you are sewing on a slow speed, the reverse button hesitates to reverse immediately. This is not a defect, it is just that slow sewing results in slow reversing. If you are sewing fast, the reverse button reverses immediately.
NEEDLE-THREADER: Read the directions on how to use the needle threader and you will really like it.
BOBBIN WINDER: If you do it right, it is awesome. Me before reading instructions==> bobbin "a hot mess." Me after reading instructions, bobbin "perfect."
INSTRUCTION MANUAL: I highly recommend that you have the instruction manual at your side continually because there are many tips that will help. Page 36 begins to tell you what the feet are used for. However, the manual fails to include the button hole error 6L.
ACCESSORIES AND BONUSES: Look at my photos for more info. By the way, this does include a button hole foot that I forgot to include in the picture and if you get an error 6L, it just means that you didn't pull the black lever down, which is behind the needle threader. This troubleshooting is not found in the manual. However, it is in the explanation, but easily missed. Other than that, the plastic cover will fit snugly inside of the fabric carrying case.
WEIGHT: This thing is about 20 lbs. so it feels like a baby in a car seat.
ONLINE VIDEOS AND CLAIMS: I watched some great online videos, on You Tube and a website, about the Janome 2014 machine and its previous clones. One reviewer said that this machine was created to be a "jam-free" machine. I can tell you that this machine is highly "jam-free" because you can sew right off the fabric repeatedly without issues using the straight stitch. However, I did have a couple jams and a couple, minor bobbin-related double threading issues. I cannot tell you whether this was related to a threading problem, but it is possible. Nevertheless, I sewed a lot of product quickly and error-free all day and I am very thankful so I am giving it five stars. I absolutely and highly recommend this machine for both beginners to more advanced.
The machine with the hard cover on does fit snugly into the nice case that came as a bonus.
I was using a Singer 9340 and while it had a lot of stitches (that I don't need) it was very slow, noisy and didn't feed well even with a walking foot. When it got jammed in the bobbin area and then would not sew I felt it wasn't worth fixing even though it's not very old. I could not figure out the needle threader.
