Do you own or plan to buy the "Japanese for Busy People I: Revised 3rd Edition" either in romanized or kana version? If you do, this is a pretty good choice if you want to do more exercises along with the lessons learned from the "Japanese for Busy People I". This workbook only provides more dialogue and listening exercises. Do not expect to see any grammar tips, culture notes, or even kana. If you do not have the "Japanese for Busy People I", you will not find this book helpful at all. All the dialogues in this workbook are written in romanized form, no kana. But that's ok, because this workbook only targets the dialogues and listening exercises. So, looking for extra homeworks? This is not a bad choice.

Pros:
1. Reinforces the dialogues from the textbook

Cons:
1. Romaji - I have the kana version of the textbook and I wish there was a kana version of this workbook
2. Not a grammar workbook - This is a workbook for practicing the conversations presented in the textbook. I was expecting more grammar drills.

Overall, it is a decent book with great printing and illustrations. But content-wise, I'm not so sure. I refer to it every now and then if I want to remember certain phrases. However, I can also do the same thing by opening the textbook.

My recommendation: work through the textbook and skip this workbook.

This is more of a review of the Japanese for Busy People series. The workbook only adds additional exercises. I strongly leaned on this book to get started on learning Japanese. Generally, my experience has been that people will recommend one of three books - the Genki series, Minna no Nihongo, and Japanese for Busy People. I found JBP to be better for me. I would probably recommend skipping this workbook. It's good but I think using the original book has enough exercises that you can then move on to another. I have this but never bothered with it.

BUT I do recommend pairing the JBP books (or any book) with other learning tools. My only negative about this book is that they don't really explain WHY. They just say do this. It hurt my learning curve because the WHY is important when applying it to other situations.

Honestly, the best tool I recommend is Human Japanese. They really really dumb it down and it's very conversational approach rather than textbook. I feel like I have a teacher there explaining why things are done in a certain way. I'm not here to sell one product or another... I'm passionate about learning the language and anything I can do to help others down the path, I'm happy to do so.

The big takeaway is use a few different sources so you get a better understanding. Japanese for Busy People series is a great start (even better if you go with the kana version instead of Romanized).

The main book is great, but the workbook is very 'light'. For me, a workbook is where you can 'cram' more exercise, this one only contains a couple of exercices per chapter.
There are actually more exercices in the main book than in the workbook.

Otherwise, the few exercices are well designed and follow the main book.

I purchased this Workbook/Textbook combination for a course, and the materials were very effective at portraying a businessperson's situation and suitable uses in communicating in Japanese. However, to a novice of the language who is looking for basics such as grammar or basic nouns, verbs, or adjectives, the materials fall short.

In addition, it's very worth mentioning that this item is a ROMANIZED workbook, so for any users who purchase the Kana Textbook, you will be either pleasantly surprised or disappointed to learn that there is no requirement to know Katakana or Hiragana in order to complete the exercises within. While this can be a positive or negative in it's own way, I was personally disappointed to learn that there was not a Kana Workbook, which as a more serious student I would have appreciated.

Overall, this is a great textbook if:
-You are a businessperson
-You do business with Japanese/Japanese-speaking/Japanese-cultured people
-You will be taking trips to Japan for business

This may not be for you if:
-You are a student who will not be doing business in Japan
-You want to learn Japanese to read Manga/Watch Anime

The back jacket of this book says the title could have beeen "drills for oral fluency". This is in relation to the main text however, as on its own the workbook without the main text has no guidance of the grammar or vocabulary. If you have the main textbook then, the workbook is useful; but not so much if you haven't.

The workbook reviews in chapter order every listening exercise, short dialogue and target dialogue from the main textbook, with a separate page given to each dialogue followed so as not to confuse learning. Illustrations as storyboards are bright and clear and speaking roles and key sentences are left blank for the listener to fill in and follow as if they were there speaking.

As there is little delay between parts, you really have to practice and follow the illustrations at a glance. This is very different to the main text where there is only text and no blank speaking parts to follow; so as a 'drills for oral fluency' book, the workbook is great review material.
