This dictionary has:
Over 170,000 entries
More than 28,000 example sentences
Hiragana readings for all entries
Allows searching by kanji or hiragana/katakana
Can be set as a default Japanese dictionary, enabling automatic text look-up from within a Kindle book, as you read
Entries with cross-references include links for easy navigation within the dictionary
Words with antonyms contain a link to the corresponding dictionary entry
Dictionary entries with alternative 'spellings' (more than one possible writing in kanji or kana) can be found using any of the alternatives spellings
Loan words display the source word and language (over 2300 entries)
Includes regional/dialect expressions
Antonyms contain links to each other for easy navigation/lookup
Notes on usage with Kindle Paperwhite
Searching for words while reading a Japanese book will work as-is if you set this dictionary to be the default dictionary to use for Japanese books. To set this dictionary as the default got to Settings > Device Options > Language and Dictionaries > Dictionaries > Japanese and select this dictionary.
If you wish to use the Paperwhite's search box function (the magnifying glass icon) to search the dictionary outside of reading a book you must set your Kindle Paperwhite's language to be Japanese (Settings > Device Options > Language and Dictionaries > Language > Japanese). The search box (magnifying glass) is limited - it can only search dictionaries that are in the same source language as the currently set language.

Pros: Since it is based on EDICT it has a decent number of entries, and it finds many idiomatic expressions (this is particularly nice).
Cons: It is a somewhat amateurish conversion, it has trouble finding words from Kana (unless the word is commonly written in Kana). EDICT is free in other (non-Kindle)formats, so 9.99 does not look exactly cheap.
I think it would not work as the sole JP dictionary for a beginner, because of the Kana problems, but it was pretty useful for me (intermediate to advanced learner, so most stuff I'm trying to read is mostly in Kanji) because of the idiomatic expressions.
Well, in the end, I can say it was worth the 10 bucks for me.
I was planning to use this in combination with the Japanese Harry Potter ebooks to help my Japanese reading abilities. Sadly I realized afterwards that due to the furigana in the ebooks I was getting confused and lost.
The dictionary did exactly what it needed to though.
Amazon should include this along with the other pre-loaded dictionaries on the Paperwhite.
The good:
The number of entries is just massive. I found explanations for very special and rare words in Katakana. Also, longer expressions are there, which helps to understand more complex sentences. It is fast and convenient.
The bad:
Most of the Hiragana searches do not work, which is a big negative. To better understand how words or expressions are used in context, a proper dictionary in book form is still needed.
Conclusion:
This dictionary massively supports me in reading Japanese books. Nevertheless improvements are necessary.
Now that Apple has removed the Japanese English dictionary from ios6, this is where to go!
Based on the famous edict, so it covers all vocabulary I have come across til now.

This dictionary cost 5 times more than the other one and I have not found a single entry yet that was better explained in this dictionary than in the other one. If I could return it, then I would since I will only be using the version from Thomas McCarthy from now on.
On the positive side, the dictionary works on my Kindle Paperwhite and on the Kindle iOS app. But I must admit that the dictionary lookup window on my iPhone is ridiculously small and hard to read. The experience is nicer on the Paperwhite.
