Little has been published in English on the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF), let alone its most successful fighter pilots - no less than 150 of them achieved ace status during eight years of near-constant war, and they are all listed in this volume. Japanese Army Air Force aces is a great book! Osprey made another great book of it's long line of 'Aircraft of the aces'. This book has 81 pages of information, color plates of planes and pilots, and black and white photos. Being a fan of WWII airplanes, aces and air battles, I found this book a must have for any WWII airplane and aces fan. The color plates of the pilots and airplanes are wonderfully drawn, another plus if you a modeler like me.
The book starts at the China and Nomahan Incident in the mid to later 1930's, to the Home Defence of Japan in the middle of 1944 to the end of the war. With lots of information on Japanese pilots who fough valiantly against the Americans, British, Australians, Chinese and others.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the brave JAAF pilots who fought from China to Japan.
There are a few typos, but only a word here or there. I give this book a 5 star rating for the information and photos that it brings. A truly good book!

The book is full of the aces of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. There are short biographys of most of the pilots who became aces as well as pictures of them & many of the aircraft. At the back there is a list of the aces from highest scoring to lowest. There are also a few color plates of different planes & the pilots who flew them. A nice little book. Goes well with Dr. Hata's book on the army air force aces. I recommend this book.

I have this as well as the Japanese Naval Aces book, they both differ drastically from the rest of the aircraft of the aces series of books as the author of these two books chooses to do page long bios of the aces in focus instead of intertwining them into the story of battles like the other books in the series do. This and the Naval Aces books are probably my least favorite in the osprey series, the author should've stuck with the format the other authors in the aces have gone with.

It's unfortunate that JAAF planes and pilots never got the kind of attention their IJNAS counterparts did. The Ki-100 and Ki-84 doesn't quite compare to the Zeke, Jack and Rex, and navy pilots just seemed to have a more romanticized image.The brown propellars with green fuselages probably didn't help either.
