I was really impressed with this book. It has 5 traditional japanese folk tales. Two pages side by side are in two different languages, japanese and english. When a kanji is first introduced in the story it has a hiragana reading, but the next time that kanji appears it will not have the reading so it forces you to pay attention and remember readings. At the end of the story the book goes over sections of the text, asks questions on grammar, and explains kanji pairings. Over all very helpful if you know hiragana, katakana and some decent knowledge in kanji.

The cover art is pretty and the story selection is a very good especially for people who have not read many japanese stories.
The only complaint I have is the included CD, I don't know many people who still use CDs so it would improve the product if they included a digital key for the audio as well/instead.

I've been studying vocabulary for a while and it gets boring. I was learning the writing systems to read Japanese and picked this up as well as Harry Potter in Japanese. I'm pretty impressed with the face to face pages and at the end of each of the very short stories is vocabulary for almost everything. It's exactly at the level I want to be at to increase understanding from single words to getting ideas across. The audio CD at the end helps with hearing how to say the words too.

This book has five stories, three are longer and two are quite short. I've asked Japanese people about them, and it seems these stories and their authors are well known in Japan. Each story is written in kanji with furigana, and then in English. Each story also has an index of translated words, with detailed explanations. So, it's not just a story and its translation, its a story with a grammar and vocabulary lesson. The CD is a bit amateur. I listen in my car, and the sound only comes out of one speaker. However, I love listening to the CD. I highly recommend this book, especially for advanced beginner Japanese learners.

This books contains stories every child in Japan learns in Elementary School, and if you're just starting to get a fairly good sized vocabulary, it's perfect. As to who should read? Well, its probably best for people were almost ready to read their first real literature.

This is JUST what I needed to keep up with my Japanese after graduating! The pictures are also very beautiful and add a nice touch to the stories. The stories include a lot of kanji but always have pronunciation in hiragana so you can practice, and of course the english translation on the left will help you go back and forth to grasp the full meaning of the Japanese text. HIGHLY recommend for anyone who loves Japanese and wants to continue learning after schooling.

Bought this for daughter taking Japanese in college. She found it helpful to hold her knowledge as no one in the house can speak/practice with her! After two years of classes she could read this with no issues.

Excellent - Just the book I have been wanting to help with learning to read Japanese
Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2019Verified Purchase
This is a great book for intermediate learners of Japanese. It makes learning to read Japanese an enjoyable process. It is laid out perfectly with English on one side and Japanese on the other followed by translation notes and vocabulary. The stories are interesting and just the right difficulty. I hope this author team releases more books like this in the future.

Good but cd audio quality is poor

Good overall, but the audio recording quality is poor. The voices are lacking in low end frequencies and there is quite a bit of white noise as a result of poor microphone equipment. It’s a shame because in all other ways I enjoyed it.

O livro é super completo! Além de ter várias histórias interessantes, tem também o dicionário de palavras, o que ajuda muito na hora de ler e de memorizar as palavras. Vem também um cd com as histórias faladas. Valeu cada centavo. E chegou mais rápido do que eu esperava. Recomendo muito!

Great stories for young children. The book is structured so the engliah text is on the left pages while the japanese text is on the right. All japanese text will be in sync with whats on the english side so you won't be reading what is actually on the next page. Very handy.
I would prefer more short stories on the book but as it stands its a good value and the stories are very interesting.

El libro cuenta con un CD de todas las historias incluidas. En cuanto al libro en sí, te presenta diferentes historias japonesas en inglés y japonés cara a cara, luego al finalizar la lectura hay un glosario con algunas de las palabras usadas, incluyendo su kanji, hiragana y traducción al inglés.

Perfect for working through with a native speaker

I am using this book as a break from the "tedium" of textbook exercises with my italki partner. The focus being on improving listening skills when you can read along - and escape to the English in a pinch (ideally never). The stories are actually interesting, unlike so many of the choices found in, say, Tadoku. This is definitely for the intermediate and above student - so above me at time of writing this, but that's OK.
The CD is a bit archaic, but if you still have a drive it's 5 minutes of work to move the MP3 to your iPhone via iTunes (don't know what you have to do on Android). However there is also a link provided at the beginning of the book on downloading them from the publisher's website, where you can just grab them all as a ZIP file. I just did that for comparison and it works just as well (contrary to what some commenters have complained about).
What I really like about the audio is that they reader made an effort for clear pronunciation while still sounding natural: no anime style "cool talk". Even at my level I could read along with the hiragana/furigana quite well - even though I otherwise still struggle even with NHK Easy!
