2.0 out of 5 stars Good for reference, not for learning
By Emily on January 29, 2019
On first glance I was really impressed by this book but even diving into what I thought was basic review I noticed some translation issues.
For example “はじめまして” is a phrase used to greet someone for the first time, and more or less means “how do you do?” However this books marks this meaning as “hello” without even mentioning its first time use.
Later I learn the verb “いる” which means to have. It’s example sentence reads “いぬ が [い]ます” which means I have a dog. It is important to note the example only highlights “い” because as a beginner I have no idea why a verb would drop its ending. Turns out “います” is a more poliet version of the verb, but the book doesn’t even highlight them as the same word, or teach the verb form they use as example.
During the family section there is a page with 7 vocabulary words missing any translations. These are all words for referring to someone else’s family and are very similar to the past few vocabulary you learn for your own family. However it the book does not tell you they are similar or what they mean - you just have to look it up again.
Lastly this book teaches some kanji vocabulary, but not all that would be N5 level such as teaching 父 / ちち for father but just いぬ for dog. Which is only a minor complaint, but annoying nonetheless.
I’ve only read a small portion of this book (50, of the 1000 words) but I’ve needed to cross reference and ask questions far too many times. I understand that there is a grammar book in this series as well as online support / audio (please note I have not tried these) but as a stand alone resource it isn’t always trustworthy or useable.
I would not recommend this book unless you are only use it to review after working on the JLPT N5 for some time.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's small, the size of a book.
By lunareclipse on May 7, 2021
I didn't realized how small these books were so at first glance I was disappointed by the size. I also find that the other language translation kind of throw me off. I am also learning chinese, so having chinese translations instead would've been more helpful(just my perference!). I also wished they provided more than one sentence example as one is not nearly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for starters
By Cliente de Prime on January 26, 2020
It arrived earlier than expected! Yay!! It's good to study vocabulary and start to understand, the audios are great and helps with pronunciation, the app is kind of tricky but if you at least know a little hitagana and katakana you will manage just right.

Exactly what I wanted. It’s small and very informative. The free audio makes it even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good book for N5 level japanese
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 14, 2019
This is a fantastic book, along with the other series. It is divided up into sections and subjects. It has example sentences and phrases, also hiragana and katakana translations. It also has a red film to cover up the page to help you memorise the vocabulary. Moreover it is very well put together to help you with sentence structure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Provides the best parts of "Tae Kim Guide to Japanese Grammar" and "Core 2k/6k Vocabulary".
Reviewed in Japan on August 26, 2018
I became aware of this book from a Matt VS Japan video where he discussed a person's success story of studying just this book and the follow-on N4 book, and ending up passing the JLPT N4 exam with no other study. While interesting, the biggest selling point was mentioning that all 1000 words in this book have example sentences that progressively introduce more complex Japanese grammar PLUS the book publisher's website provide native audio of all the words and sentences.

I have purchased this book and proceeded to convert into an Anki electronic flashcard format along with the audio. In the process, I concur this is a great resource that provides what Tae Kim and Core 2k does without their weaknesses. Unlike Core 2k, the example sentences do not use grammar or vocabulary not already introduced. Unlike Tae Kim, there's no sentence with 3 or more new words introduced and each new grammar concept has multiple sentences demonstrating it. By the way, grammar is taught through the context of the sentences which means you learn it intuitively as you learn vocabulary.

My recommendation for anyone using this book to ask persons who have the Anki deck for it share (with modest proof of ownership of the book). Then, set up your cards to test Audio to Comprehension. In addition, use the merged audio files of the sentences to add in your Japanese audio immersion loop if you do such techniques to increase your listening fluency.
