Some surprising admissions from these Japanese soldiers, sailors and airmen like Zero pilot Kaname Harada': ‘ You saw the enemy pilot’s face, suffering in pain…Sometimes I saw the cockpit all red, splattered in blood'. Another Private talked about his horror of being told to bayonet a civilian: ‘Somehow he got loose and ran around. I had to chase after him, jump on him and bayonet him in a puddle of muddy water. You never forget such a thing.’
As well as brutal accounts of combat, they describe cannibalism, the execution of prisoners of war, and the civilians' treatment in the countries they conquered.
The end of the war chapter is very interesting. A Colonel (Takahisa Okamoto) said ‘I was relieved. The ordeal I had not asked for was over. I called my battalion together…I told my men that Japan had been defeated, but they should not be discouraged as they had fought well. They should go home to their loved ones and live their lives.’
Also engaging views on the outcome of the war, varying from those who thought they should not have surrendered to those who realise starting the war was a great mistake.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with a WWII fascination or interest for more grit in their history.
