In Ms. Edwards' usual style, Jared is a man's man. Strong, family driven, alpha to the bone. Hope is independent and smart, loyal to her family. The setting of Coyote Ridge and Dead Heat are familiar with guest appearances by some of the Walkers such as Curtis and Travis and the Lambert sisters. The books' steady pace keeps you engaged in the story and the dual (sometimes more) POVs lets you see the progression of the couple's feelings for each other. Jared's hardhearted ex wife stirring up trouble and a beautiful surprise rounds out a good read. I'm a fan of Nicole's Edwards' Walker family and Jared is a nice addition to the Saga.
The reason for 3.5 stars (a good read) is that it was missing something for me. Every one of the past stories have had off-the-charts heat and chemistry between the lead characters and a feeling of strong emotions in their coming together. Unfortunately, I just didn't get those essential elements with Jared. I was actually way more interested in how the drama with Jared's ex-wife was going to turn out and little cameos of Travis than I was with what was happening between Jared and Hope. I just couldn't seem to connect with Hope and her struggle to keep her distance from a man she was falling for. Hope just needed that little bit more that I expect from a Edwards' leading lady.
Having the Walker family reunion as the backdrop to this main story was awesome! It was so nice to get to spend a little time with everyone again. And I know this is Jared’s story, but can I just talk about Travis for a second? If I didn’t already love him madly, his role in this story and everything he did for Jared and little Derrick, would certainly have done it. I love the whole crossover aspect and intertwining of the lives of the Walker’s and the ladies of Dead Heat Ranch with a dash of Sniper 1 Security tossed in for good measure. This is a must read for any Nicole Edward’s fan! If I could give it more than 5 stars I would.
Although there are only 2 (well, 2.5) books in the Dead Heat Ranch series, we know a bit more about Hope than we know about Jared. A little more of her back story…that is if you read that series. Again, not necessary for you to do so to read this book. I think it adds some depth if you read the other books though. And they’re great, so why not?
The relationship between Jared and Hope is really sweet. Neither of them is looking for a relationship. They’re not even looking for a hook-up when they initial meet. But the chemistry between them is palpable from the moment they talk…not even meet, but talk! Jared realizes the futility of fighting the attraction first, but Hope is soon on the same page. I love how both of them have the overwhelming urge to open up to each other but both hold back. The way Jared and Hope are so at ease and natural with each other is great.
As usual, Jared’s cousin Travis comes through for the family. Travis, as well as the rest of the Walker family, is not going to sit back and allow Jared’s ex to ruin his life or hurt his child. This group always has each other’s backs. And the family goes beyond blood to those friends who are in their “inner circle”. I love when the claws come out with the family and they all band together.
A bonus in this book, we actually get to visit Alluring Indulgence. It’s always there in the background of the AI books, but seldom does anyone visit (at least not during their story lines) for anything other than special events. We get to get a peek at the resort on a regular weekend night. Not only did I enjoy the look inside, I also love the way Hope handles the situation. It seemed like a very real response.
As usual, Nicole Edwards hooks me into her story as well as gets me curious about the other characters. I can’t wait to read more about the extended Walker family as well as see the rest of Hope’s sisters get their HEAs one day.
