I've been having wicked joint pain and I've been looking for a solution, anything that could help. Initially, I started doing quite a bit of corrective exercise, thinking that it was something I pulled that could be worked out. Nothing happened. I then moved on to a chiropractor, who gave me relief...that was temporary. I finally went to the acupuncturist of my grandmother, and while it was a very interesting experience, it didn't seem to work nearly as well for me as it does my 82 year old grandmother. Go figure.

In my research, I came across a few articles praising the talents of turmeric, and how it works as a really good long term solution to inflammation and joint pain, so I decided to give it a try. Little did I know, there is an epic amount of product out there, and it's pretty difficult to get a square answer about what works best aside from doing trials with different products yourself. I tried another brand, and I DID feel some improvement, but then I realized it was filled with GMO's and that I was supporting the destruction of our country and humanity, and I had to throw them away, sacrificing my own pain for the good of the world. Ha.

Anyway. I found this particular brand that has no GMO's and decided that I absolutely had to give it a try. It took about 3 days to come (gotta love that Amazon Prime account) and I started right away with two tablets during the day and one in the evening. Now being the researcher that I am, I know that supplements often have a reaction time of 4-6 weeks and it sometimes takes that long for you to see any difference from taking them.

Despite that, I started noticing a difference after a few days. Small difference, but present. It's been getting increasingly better every day, and I'm really satisfied with the product. What do I do in the meantime, you may ask? Well, you know what they say, you never buy just one product from Amazon. I also bought this topical pain reliever, ThermaChill Pain Relief Roll On Cold Therapy, 3 fl oz. - Top Choice for Arthritis, Migraine Relief, Joint & Muscle Pain - Limited Time Offer: Buy 1 Get 1 Free!,which I rub on my achey joints a few hours before I go to bed, and it makes my pain melt away. Due to the active ingredients of tea tree oil and menthol, the ointment first warms your pained areas, and then produces a cooling sensation that works at dulling the pain. Fantastic! I give the Curcumin C3 five stars, and I recommend trying a different product in the time that it takes for the supplement to change your body.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading curcumin supplements: Innovix Labs High Absorption Curcumin, Nutrigold Turmeric Curcumin Gold, Doctor's Best Curcumin C3 Complex with BioPerine (120 Capsules), Viva Labs Curcumin C3® (Turmeric) w/ Bioperine, Doctor's Best Curcumin Phytosome, Jarrow Formulas Curcumin 95, Life Extension Super Bio-curcumin, Gaia Herbs Turmeric Supreme, Now Foods Curcumin Extract (60 Count), and New Chapter Turmeric Force.

INTRODUCTION:

Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric, the spice often used in curries. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years for various inflammatory conditions. Recently, there has been a lot of positive scientific research confirming these benefits. Not surprisingly, several new curcumin products have become available.

Curcumin is like fish oil in that it has multiple benefits. Curcumin is used for pain/inflammation, brain health or cognitive decline, cancer prevention, heart health and even alleviating depression. Many of these seemingly unrelated disease conditions trace back to inflammation and reducing inflammation is how curcumin works. So it is not surprising that curcumin appears to do so many different things. Anyone taking fish oil ought to seriously consider adding curcumin to his or her supplement regimen.

Curcumin is very poorly absorbed but is safe even at very high doses. Taking turmeric spice is not recommended, as it is barely absorbed. Several competing technologies that provide higher-absorption curcumin have become available. Most of them claim to be better than the other types of curcumin. What most people do not realize is that most of these "Our brand is better than the other brand" claims are based on studies that compared highly purified curcumin extracts to turmeric or low-potency curcumin.

You will see one brand claiming "10X better absorbed" while another says "2000% better absorbed." These claims are not false, but remember that this is like comparing a sports car to an old jalopy instead of another sports car.

But what is clear is that the addition of black pepper extract makes curcumin much better absorbed. BioPerine® is the most researched, patented and studied black pepper extract. It is worth paying a little extra for products with BioPerine®. Sabinsa Corp makes BioPerine® and they are also the most established curcumin manufacturer. Their curcumin products (C3 Complex and C3 Reduct) have the most research and science behind them. Other trusted brands of curcumin are BCM-95 and Meriva.

BCM-95® is a promising new form of curcumin extract. It's a mixture of curcumin extract and turmeric essential oil. The makers of BCM-95® claim much higher absorption (6X as much as regular curcumin) and longer duration in the blood. These figures may be puffed because the 'increased absorption' includes biologically useless compounds like curcumin glucuronides. Also, the blood duration study was conducted by the manufacturer on just 4 individuals in India. BCM-95® products usually do not contain black pepper extract, possibly to keep cost low. It would be much better absorbed if taken with black pepper extract like BioPerine® and taken with a meal. You could always combine a BCM-95® product with another that also contains BioPerine® to help increase absorption. BCM-95® has been clinically studied - eight human clinical trials so far with positive results. This is a good product but falls just short of great due to the absence of black pepper extract and somewhat inflated absorption claims.

CurcuWin technology makes curcumin more water soluble (and therefore better absorbed) by mixing Curcumin with tocopherol and a polymer, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). This product was shown to be better absorbed than BCM-95 and Meriva but the 46X better claim is not an apples-to-apples comparison. It was only shown to be better absorbed than other Curcumin extracts given two conditions 1) when there was no black pepper extract present and 2) and when taken on an empty stomach. Curcumin of all forms are very poorly absorbed on empty stomachs and without black pepper extract. Whether the relative absorption claim will remain in the presence of food and black pepper extract, remains to be seen. With CurcuWin technology, up to 70 to 80% of each capsule could be PVP and only 20% of the capsule is curcumin extract. We do not know if it is safe to consume several hundred mgs of PVP on a daily basis.

Meriva, Longvida, Cavamax, and Theracurmin all sacrifice quantity of active compound for increased absorption. BCM-95®, C3 Reduct and C3 Complex provide the highest levels of curcumin per pill since they are not diluted by carriers.

Theracurmin technology gets better absorption by making the curcumin particle size very small (nano technology). This makes it water-dispersible. Like the technologies above, this technology is 90% carrier and 10% active compound. 300 mgs of Theracurmin has 30 mgs of curcumin. Again, those 30 mg are going to be well absorbed.

Another point to consider before buying is that technologies like Meriva, Longvida, and Cavamax provide curcumin that is highly absorbed, but they got that way by binding the curcumin with absorbing agents. In some cases, the capsules are 80% absorbing agents. This leaves hardly any room for curcumin, which somewhat defeats the purpose of taking curcumin. So if you see "500 mgs of Curcumin Complex," you may only be getting 100 mgs of actual curcumin - albeit the 100 mg will be well absorbed.

Regardless of which type of curcumin you buy, it is interesting to note that all curcumin is digested in the body by good probiotic bacteria.

All the various forms of curcumin extracts make a regular "cost per pill" comparison somewhat useless. If it seems really cheap, you may be buying the "spice grade" powdered turmeric, which you're better off passing on.

BREAKDOWN: Here is a breakdown of these products.

*****
Highlights: Outstanding, brand new, third generation cutting edge product. Contains a "pre-converted" and time-released form of C3® Reduct Curcumin. I like these for the simple fact of portability. You toss these in your backpack to work and just take them before and after work with some water and your good to go. I work moving furniture all day, so by the end of the day my body is sore and my knees ache. I took these for about a month and half, and slowly I've felt a difference. My knees don't ache as much as they did after work and I'm not as sore, my recovery time after a big move day is much faster. It did take a bit to feel the difference, so don't expect immediate results. But give them a chance. For me it definitely beats taking ibuprofen every day, as curcumin is tumeric which is a natural root vegetable that is used frequently in cooking.

I have been using Curcumin for almost a year. I was told to go on a muscle relaxer (prescription) because I was diagnosed with Siatica. I made the decision to do some research, and found this product. I never took the prescription, but rather have used this. I am very pleased with it. I take 1 tablet every morning, and I have had no recurrence of Sciatica muscle pains.

I had a very painful case of tendonitis in my left wrist and hand. I started taking this, had one session of acupuncture, iced the area every evening, slept with a wrist brace and, within days, all of the pain was gone. I now take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening. In each case, I also take a Bioperine tablet and a Bromelain capsule. Curcumin is absorbed much more efficiently when complemented by black pepper and that's the main ingredient of Bioperine (not rocket science but easier to swallow than peppercorns). Being a sceptic, I stopped taking these and, after about five days, started to feel mild discomfort in the left hand and wrist. Needless to say, I am now convinced that this regimen of Curcumin, Bioperine and Bromelain is helping.

Purchased this curcumin supplement to try and improve our overall health & help with any inflammation problems. Picked this brand because of the ingredients, the reviews and that it contains no nuts, soy, wheat & more. So far this one is the best & most potent brand that we have used.

When this supplement arrived, we always check to see it our pill bottles are sealed tight, and this one was sealed well. It had a seal around the lid and a seal on top rim of the bottle. The capsules are a medium to average size for most supplements. When the pills arrived we opened them and they had a light smell, that was like a fresh ground spice.

The bottle says to take 1 capsule per day with a meal; we take ours in the morning with breakfast. We also take Bioperine or black pepper fruit extract to help this absorb into our system & work better overall. As to the benefits, they do seem to help with pains & inflammation. It does take time until you notice these effects at all, but once you do it seems to get stronger every few days.

Pros:
Easy to take, medium size pill
Not bitter & no bad aftertaste
Contains no nuts, soy, wheat & more
Potent 500mg formula, with 95% total curcuminoids
& Helps with body pains & inflammation

Cons:
Has a few other ingredients, that are not needed...this is a major complaint we have with many different supplements.

Overall we love this brand of Curcumin and we recommend these to anyone that is looking for help with pain or inflammation. We also would suggest this brand because it contains no nuts, soy, wheat & other items that may cause reaction problems. We have tried many turmeric & curcumin products and this one so far is the best we have used.

Thank you for you time & interest in our review. If we have been helpful or you have any questions, please let us know - Greg, Tina & Family

I can't say enough good about this product. I had a very inflamed elbow some time ago and my health-nut brother told me to take this curcumin. I take one in the morning and one at night. The inflammation disappeared within a couple of weeks and my elbow had regained its strength and the pain is gone. I keep taking it because I've heard from many sources about the hundreds of benefits of taking tumeric.

Warning! count your pills! I purchased this 2 days ago. I took 2 pills the first day and the next day forgot if I had taken 1 or 2. So I counted the pills and discovered I was only sent 35 pills total! The bottle clearly states 60 capsules. I urge anyone buying this product to count their pills immediately upon receiving them! Jarrow clearly has zero quality control.

This brand of Curcumin is also sold on the Life Extension website so I have confidence in the product. I take a lot of supplements so can't pinpoint specific improvement, but based on research felt I simply had to add to the arsenal.

Good value for 95% curcumin supplement. I either get this or Now brand, whichever is the best value at the time. I intentionally purchase curcumin without bioperine, which I know increases absorption of many supplements, but gives me acid indigestion even in small amounts. Jarrow and Now make the highest quality curcumin products without this ingredient.

As far as curcumin in general, it is probably the best antioxidant for the money, as well as being a great anti-inflammatory. It is now being "prescribed" at the rate of three capsules once or twice per day to combat painful conditions like arthritis, but this amount would also cause me acid indigestion, bioperine or not.
