From the Manufacturer

Product Profile

The mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus) is a small tree, which thrives in the Mediterranean region. It ranges from Portugal on the one end of the Mediterranean to Turkey on the other, and is also found in parts of tropical Africa. It was known and widely used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to treat a variety of gastrointestinal complaints. As a matter of fact, ancient Greek physicians, such as Hippocrates, Dioscorides, Theophrastos, and Galenos, mentioned its properties and recommended its use. The astringent and aromatic qualities of the bark of the tree have been used traditionally to cleanse the breath and to tighten the gums.* Mastic gum is a resinous compound found in the trunk portion of the tree. Resins, such as the triterpene mastic acid, make up 90% of the gum. Volatile oil is responsible for much of the aromatic quality of the gum and can constitute up to 3% of the product. Mastic gum is viewed as very safe. The resin is sometimes used in food and beverage production. Furthermore, there are a number of trace elements found in mastic gum such as sodium, magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, and manganese. Mastic has also been reported to possess strong antioxidant activity.*

Gastrointestinal Health

Stress, alcohol, drugs, smoking, and bad dietary habits can wreak havoc on the stomach. On the other hand, good dietary habits can contribute to the health of the stomach. For example, cabbage juice is famous for promoting gastrointestinal health. Similarly, when people with stomach concerns were put on a long-term (six months) high-fiber diet, the rate of improvement in gastrointestinal health was fast and significant. However, not many people are willing to drink cabbage juice, let alone follow a long-term protocol of a high-fiber diet. Mastic gum is a natural product that has been used for over 2,500 years to promote the health of the intestines, stomach, and liver.* However, it was not until the mid 1980s that researchers confirmed mastic’s efficacy in supporting gastric and duodenal cells and tissues.* One gram daily of mastic gum has been found to be safe and effective in supporting stomach health.* In addition to its antioxidant properties, scientists also believe mastic gum is beneficial to gastric tissue and balances gastric secretions.* These special qualities could explain mastic gum’s renowned effect on the health of the stomach and duodenum.*

Other Uses

Mastic gum has also been used for centuries to promote oral hygiene.* In fact, modern research has shown that mastic chewing gum may be an effective tool for promoting healthy teeth and gums.* Moreover, a study published in the April 20, 2007 issue of the Journal of Ethnopharmacology indicated that mastic gum could have hepatoprotective and cardioprotective properties in humans.* Previous animal studies had shown that mastic gum was beneficial in supporting liver health.*

My husband was having severe stomach issues. He had a history of stress induced ulcers several years ago that resolved by drinking raw cabbage juice 2 times a day. However about 6 months ago we went through a very stressful situation and he started complaining of really bad heartburn whenever he drank water between meals, this progressed severe belching (that seemed endless, we wondered, where does all the air come from?) with pressure in the base of his throat and severe acid regurgitation that was so bad at night that he couldn't sleep.

I should note that he is extremely healthy, eats a whole food diet, isn't overweight and is an avid athlete.

We did some research and decided that H-pylori was a possibility. We bought the mastic gum he started experiencing relief immediately. Within 10 minutes he was still belching but he had no heartburn- he said it tasted like pine trees. Which, he says, was quite pleasant after all the heartburn.

After he started the mastic gum and it had a positive effect, we put him on a gluten and dairy free diet, manuka honey 1 tablespoon 3 times a day, and cabbage or broccoli shake daily (made in our Vitamix). Of all of this, however, we both feel the mastic gum had the biggest effect. This is an amazing product. I highly recommend it before getting on the endless train ride that the pharmaceutical companies will offer you (they don't want to cure you, a patient cured is a customer lost). My husband plans to take the mastic gum daily for a total of 3 months as is advised in the literature. He takes 1000mg on an empty stomach in the morning and at night.

I guess there's some debate in the research world about whether mastic gum really kills helicobacter pylori, but I can tell you it worked for me. My stomach biopsy tested positive for h. pylori and then when I took the mastic gum my symptoms disappeared and a stool sample tested negative. I didn't have any other treatment. A few times when my stomach didn't seem to be working so well I took it again and got improvement. Jarrow was the brand I used and it seemed great. You want a strong resiny smell. I took it an hour before breakfast, and probably took it at night too since the usual recommendation is 500 mg twice a day for at least two weeks. I also took a good sniff and said "die, suckers!" That part is optional!

I never wrote a review on any product before. I have gone thru extreme stress during the past year causing me stomach ulcers. I was taking medication for three weeks with no effect. Nothing helped reduce my pain until I found this product. Absolutely AMAZING!!! My pain was gone after three days taking the mastic gum in the mornings as recommended. I would give it 10 stars if it was possible.

I don't know what I was suffering with because the doctors couldn't find anything but I had symptoms of everything, Gastritis, Ulcer, Acid Reflux, Indigestion, Bloating, IBS, I mean you name it I felt it, burning, belching, ect.,Oh-My-Goosh! How this started; one night I woke up out my sleep with burning in my abdominal area center to navel and its been a roller coaster ride ever since, this went on for two whole straight months, within that two months I must of been on everything herbal AND pharmaceutical and NOTHING I mean absolutely NOTHING was working, every time I tried something new I went from bad to worse.

It took about a week and a half of me taking these faithfully before all my symptoms completely disappeared. I'm still taking them even though I'm no longer experiencing pain and discomfort and I also take cod liver oil and a good quality multivitamin to build back up my immune system.

Note: I purchased these from Vitamin Shoppe, I original placed an order on Amazon but I was so desperate and couldn't wait for them to arrive by mail, so I went and bought them locally, but still wanted to leave a review in hopes of encouraging someone else.

I used this supplement to help me with my H Pylori infection. I used this and Matula Herbal Tea (they have a money back guarantee). Mastic Gum by itself may or may not get rid of your H Pylori. I mainly used the mastic to heel the lining of my stomach because of the duodenum ulcer that had developed due to the h pylori.

Tips to help get rid of your H Pylori:
- Eat smaller portions
- Use Standard Process Zypan before eating meals (helps to break down your food)

I also used Aloe Vera Juice to help soothe my stomach as well as the mastic gum in 1000mg - 2000mg doses twice a day for at least 30 days.

I went to the Curezone online to see what else could help.
H Pylori is a tough infection to shake. I even did the round of antibiotics and it came back. Just pay attention to your diet and your body, you'll be able to tell if the mastic is helping you or not.

This is considered a cheap and more convenient alternative than antibiotics. The antibiotics were pretty heavy duty. They were the biggest pills I've ever taken.

For the past three years i have had constant issues with my stomach such as gas, bloating all day, gaining weight, constipation, even though i look skinny. During these three years i went to see different doctors who kept telling me nothing was wrong with me and that I needed to change my diet (which I did) and do more exercise (which i did as well) but my stomach issues kept appearing. At the beginning of this year i decided to do a more thorough check up and ended up finding out I had H. Pylori which i was prescribed two antibiotics (amox and clarith) with another pill called omeprazole (sp?) to take for two weeks twice a day. I only lasted three days because of serious side effects with these drugs so after doing a bit of research online I found out that there was a way to control and eradicate pylori with mastic gum and manuka honey as well as using probiotics. I purchases jarrows mastic gum and finished the bottle (took for one month) and during the time i took mastic gum i decided to try out a gluten free diet and taking a teaspoon of manuka honey before bed. I took the mastic gum this way: one pill (500mg) two hours before breakfast and one pill at night (one hour before manuka honey). The whole time i took mastic gum i did not have anymore issues with the symptoms i had described in the beginning of this review, i was amazed. My stomach began getting flat like it used to be (im 145lb and 5'8) and i did not have gas issues (passing gas a lot) anymore. When I finished the bottle of Jarrow i purchased a different brand called nutricology and took it for another month and i felt the same way as when i took Jarrows brand so both brands worked for me.Read more ›
