Has all of the essential tools to improve the quality of photos, especially ones taken with a phone. It can also manipulate contrast and brightness with relative ease. A very good product. I also have version XI, and it doesn't do much more than this version.

Installation Problems

Installion problems --- I tried installing Paint Shop Pro 8.1 on my two networked home computers. It installed fine on one (a new Compaq running Windows XP Media center. Service Pack 2), but would not install on the other (an older Compaq running Windows XP Home, Service Pack 1).

On the old machine the installation stopped almost immediately on an error telling me to contact Microsoft. I tried deleting all file and registry references to a demo version of Paint Shop I had been running. Same problem. I tried installing from anther networked computer CD drive. Same problem. I copied the CD to the hard drive and tried installing from there. Same problem.

It's possible my installation problems are related to my specific machine because it is a little unstable. However, never before has a program failed to install. The CD I received was intended for the European market. Don't know if this matters.

I eventually did find a work around. It turns out you don't really need to install this program. If you can get it installed on any machine, you can just copy the Paint Shop directory to another machine and it will run there fine.

I have always loved Paintshop Pro, beginning with Version 3. For many years I have been using version 5.03 without problem and with great results. When Version 8 came out and I read the reviews, I knew I had to finally upgrade. I am not disappointed one bit. I have used various versions of Photoshop, including Elements, but I still come back to Paintshop and prefer it for many reasons that I will not go into here, except for one: PRICE. For the money, this program should get 6 stars. Like other profressinal level graphics programs, you have to have the computing power to run it well. A 2+ processor (AMD or Intel) allows it to work without probmems, and 512k memory helps as well. You do need a 1+ processor and 256k memory and with that you will wait some, but it will run. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn from the ground up or who has some familiarity with other high-end graphics programs. The improvements to this version over 5.03 are tremendous. It is like a whole new program but with some nice elements remaining. The manual with it is huge and there is much support on line.

Fulfills my needs without going overboard. This is one of the few picture-editing programs I've found that will let you change just one color in your image to another color.
I took off one star only because sometimes when changing the size of the image, in pixels, the result is a 1×1 pixel image. This requires an Undo, and a re-attempt to change size, in inches.

Good product, but I bought this version and LESS than one month later Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 came out and Jasc wanted to charge the full upgrade price. Just check to be sure Jasc doesn't have a new version coming out when you buy Paint Shop Pro ( current version is 10) because Jasc will make no allowance for the fact that you JUST bought their older version.

Plus, I have discovered more than just a few places on the net that explain how to do so many clever tricks

After fumbling aroud with Adobe PhotoDeluxe 4.0 Home for eight months, I tried a trial download of Paint Shop Pro 8. Wow. I was able to edit and print photos without constantly groping through the help menu. Best of all, my wife is starting to think that my digital camera was not a complete waste of money, as I am finally able to doctor up and enlarge some photos of the kids for her. Give this program a try, I think you'll like it.
