I truly enjoyed each and every column and over the years before Modern Photography ceased publication in 1989.
This book is a collection of his columns. His dry wit and obscure facts - while enlightening the reader about cameras of many different eras, manufacturers and design - is educational and highly entertaining. I enjoy re-reading his columns and learning new tidbits of information.
Today, I have a greater appreciation for both some of the strangest looking and most obscure cameras, as well as a better understanding of how there came to be so many different cameras over the years. The book also covers cameras that were innovative and/or novel in their approach to different photography markets.
My edition of the book is 1989, but the bulk of the book is specific information about the cameras so only a little of the book is really out of date.
This book will help you sharpen your used-camera hunting skills and is something you can flip through and read about what catches your eye!
Sometimes I run across cameras on Ebay and while I can do a Google search, it's fun to pull out my book and see if there's a column on the camera in question.
Though very opinionated, perhaps even curmudgeonly in tone, these essays are cram-packed with information that can not be found anywhere else. Look forward to hours of enjoyable reading about old cameras and collecting.
If you are interested in camera collecting you MUST have this set. Unfortunately, only available used.
Highly recommended! Two thumbs WAY up!
