I will not talk about speed of delivery, how items are packaged, or defective products. Things happen and that's unfortunate.
The review:
Get these....if you're not convinced, get them anyway, however purchase these too: Comply T-500 Isolation Earphone Tips (Black, 3 Pairs, Large).
My review targets the active headphone market. I have a drawer full of disappointing active earplugs/headphones. Sure, some of them work for my use, but there is always something missing, or could have been better. So, continues the pursuit of the perfect set, and that I have found in the BlueBuds X. This is why:
Bluetooth: no more struggling with long cords, short cords, getting caught in things, flapping around while you run.....put these on and you have complete freedom. Sure, bluetooth headphones aren't new, but these are not bulky and they don't have a big heavy battery.
Audio: If you're concerned with bluetooth lossy quality, get over yourself. Stay home with your $1000 over the ear reference headphones. These are meant to go outside. I subscribe to pandora's premium service with higher quality audio and these sound fantastic. The sound stage is flat, but very well balanced. I prefer this. Bass is present and highs are clear. Bass heads, it's not all about bass. However, you must have a good fit to appreciate the terrific audio.
Build Quality: They look amazing. Made of plastic. Cord is rubbery and tough, that's a good thing. Take care of them and they will last.
ACTIVE USE: This is the most important part. I've done other activities with these, such as cycling, and calisthenics, but I'll only reference running. It took a while to dial these in. I went from thinking these would contribute to the infamous drawer, but I kept at it. The first few runs I was determining which size plugs to use and which way I should wear them - there are two ways to wear these. I chose the over the ear style. Having chosen the best size plugs, they kept sliding out. They didn't fall off, but slid out so there wasn't a good seal, and the audio suffered. I was constantly pushing them back into my ear during the run. I tried cleaning my ears immediately before my runs, dampening the plugs just a bit as i've read somewhere before, but they continued to slide out. I was disappointed at this point. I kept at it, because I wanted these to work as the previous points were really good. So, I purchased these "Comply T-500 Isolation Earphone Tips (Black, 3 Pairs, Large)." I can't believe how well those plugs worked with the BlueBuds X. Jaybird should consider providing these plugs stock. I've ran...many miles and they did not slip out once. From start to finish, no adjusting during the run; hot, sweaty, bumpy, windy, they stayed in place. I put these on and I forget about them, concentrated on my run. THE BEST, AND MY LAST, ACTIVE HEADPHONES.
A little about the Comply tips. the T-500 will fit the headphones. It took a little pushing and mashing, but they did go on. Squeeze and roll them right before putting them into your ear, pull the top of your ear up then slide the plugs in and hold them in place while the foam expands.
Gripes: These really don't matter, as the end result is me running with freedom and 100% satisfaction, it's more than that...I think love is a better word.
Charge cord: I don't get it. It's a little funky to use, but however you use it, it charges the headphones.
Power plug: Non existent. I was surprised there wasn't a usb wall outlet, so I use my phone charger.
Packaging: I know I said I wouldn't talk about it, but I do recall the headphones were a pain to get out of the box. Have scissors.
Instruction booklet: lots of pictures, not enough words, difficult to set up the over the ear style, but set it and forget.
Case: difficult to close the case with the charge cord and headphones, but mash it a few times and it'll close. There must be a hidden art to get it to fit.
Beeping: There is a beep every time you change the volume. A little annoying, so don't change the volume often.
Easter Egg: I don't recall if these are bluetooth 4.0, or if that's the cause, but on my iphone 5 there is a battery gauge for the headphones that pop up next to the bluetooth icon. A pleasant surprise!!!
I honestly don't know what the haters are going on about... these are STILL going strong. Actually, to be fair, I had to replace a pair when the battery started to diminish after a year or so. It still worked, but I wanted the original crazy-good battery life. Customer service was very helpful and fixed it with a reboot for a while, but I think after a while, like all rechargeable batteries, these started to decay. It's to be expected when I use these daily. Anyway, my wife and a handful of friends and relatives have all gotten them and NONE of them will go back to wired headphones. PLEASE, ignore the haters and dummies who don't buy a set of foam tips from Comply at the same time. Those will fix any issues you have with fit. I even dunked a pair in the sink and they are still chugging along.
UPDATE 11/6/2013:
I have been using these things DAILY since I purchased them 7 months ago, and they are, HANDS DOWN, the best headphones for someone on the go. They work flawlessly, rarely if ever drop bluetooth connection, pair instantly, still sound great (and loud), have all the necessary remote control features (for the iPhone), battery runs and runs and runs, and look as good as new. I can not recommend these highly enough (with the one caveat that you should get the foam eartips - they help enormously with sound isolation and fit). I have pretty much given up on using wired headphones; whatever negatives there are to Bluetooth have been minimized here and the positives magnify the inconvenience of dealing with the wire to the point where using wired earbuds seems almost pre-historic. I even use them when I'm NOT on the go. The only way you'll get me to give these up is by bringing out a succesor.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
As a daily commuter and runner I have found myself on a multi-year quest to find the elusive "perfect" wireless headset. I have experimented with all sorts but have been recently intrigued by the earbud style. It started with the Sony HBH-IS800, which opened my eyes and ears to the possibility that true wireless earbuds might be a reality. I thought those were perfect at the time. Last year I upgraded to the Novero Rockaways. They were a little bigger, but a LOT better. Now, after hearing about these, I ponied up the dough (twice as much as the Noveros) for a pair in hopes that these might address the few issues I had with the others.
The result? In short, these surpass all other bluetooth headphones (of any type) I have ever tried. Except for two or three small gripes these are almost the promised land.
Pros (versus Novero Rockaway, the Sony's have been discontinued):
-Louder. Like, 10x as loud. This was THE major drawback of all previous bluetooth headphones.
-Battery life. Easily double of the Rockaways
-Remote. The buttons and remote module is nicer. The buttons are easy to feel and have a much more substantial "click" to them
-audible feedback. Rather than a system of "beeps" to alert you to low battery and the like, these have a female voice that lets you know "Power On" and "Connected" etc.
-sound quality. Pumping. I immediately noticed how much deeper the bass was for music and just how much fuller in general they sound.
-Sweat-proof. I never would have even thought about wearing my old earbuds at the gym even if they stayed in. These are waterproof and warrantied against water damage. So far so good, but I've only run in them a handful of times.
-Bettery-level display. This is a fantastic feature, but I believe it MAY only work on Apple/iOS products. Once connected, in the top right corner of the iPhone display there is a battery-level indicator. Great for peace-of-mind.
Cons:
Other than the price there are none, these are superior to the Noveros in every way. They do cost twice as much, so there you go.
Gripes:
-Very short USB charging cable. Not too much of an issue as I already have a ton, but this one is 6 inches long, which is annoying.
-FOr the price these should include foam eartips. I ordered the TSX-500 from ComplyFoam and they fit perfectly and hold these babies in my ears and help with the bass.
-The buds themselves are not small. They are not "frankenstein-like", as some other reviewers have said, but they are bigger than your average earbud and will stick out of your ear a little. They are about the same size as the Rockaways, which is fine, but I am waiting for the day when they can pack the tech into an even smaller bud.
-Flat cable. The cable is supple enough, but I think these flat cables increase cable-noise while making them more durable.
-Battery cover is difficult to close. I hope to get the hang of it someday soon
I have not quite gotten the 8 hours of promised battery life, but these things do last twice as long as the old Rockaways. They also work flawlessly with my iPhone. When worn for exercising there is quite a bit of cable-noise because they are sound-isolating and lodged in your ear canal. These include a clip system that gets the cord off of your neck and it actually helps quite a bit. There are also some wing-tip things that help hold them in your ears, but I haven't needed them. Fit is obviously a very personal thing, but these fit me nicely and don't fall out easily.
If you are going to get some bluetooth earbuds, these are the way to go. If only for the volume increase alone, don't buy any others, save up your money and buy these. The downfall of the Sony and Novero models was that for things that were recorded low, like movies or tv shows, the volume was insufficient to really be useful in a loud environment (like a plane or a train). These are easily as loud as any wired earbuds. Also, get those foam eartips. The rubber ones they include worked ok, but the foam is better in every way except for durability. Which is why you buy a three-pack.
Enjoy!
Top reviews from other countries
This is the first update since I bought them in Feb 2013.
First of all, I would like to say that these are one of the most awesome earphones I have ever purchased.
Sound:
For what they are (a noise cancelling, wireless, light weight, flexible earphones) they fit the bill perfectly, so 5 out of 5. Don't get me wrong you can have better sound from other brands, however, you have to look at the overall attribute. I am an overall attribute kinda guy. So Kudos on that Jaybird.
Wear-ability: Again 5 out of 5. The range of earbuds (3 sizes) fit perfectly for most of the users. Unless you have ginormous ear loops. Then you have slight problem but one which can be overcome by the hooks aka bird wings (I call them hooks as they actually work like hooks). But I seldom use them. You can wrap the wires with a special grip (also provided) though it is slightly tacky to do it for the first time around. However, the wire is not too long so you can live without wrapping it if you want.
Weather Resistant:
Some noise distortion might occur in extreme weather conditions but hey! these are not built for space exploration otherwise they would have been more pricey (know what I mean!) and beyond your reach. All in All very good come rain or shine. But be careful they are water resistant not repellant. So don't try to take them out if its raining or stuff. OK! 5 out of 5.
Sweat Proof:
Now here things get a bit tricky. I used them purely for the quality of sound and the ease of carrying them around plus they are wireless so no tangling of wires. They are noise cancelling so I can play them really loud but the person sitting next to me won't hear a thing. I commute (or in UK take tube) daily and it is almost an hour's journey and never had a single complain from either ladies or gents. No glaring stares as you may recall!
But (yep there is always a but) I took them for the first time on my daily long runs (4 miles to be precise) and I regretted it immediately. Remember, I owned them for almost 2 years and never took them on my runs (because I read in reviews that they can go bonkers!) which is exactly what happened. On my second day of taking them on the run, when I finished I left them on the table for few hours. Then next morning as I was preparing for my daily commute I tried to recharge them but they wont turn on. I tried and tried but with no luck. (Not that it matter but it is worth mentioning here that my sweat is a bit acidic, as I have been told by my trainers - don't ask me why)
Customer Service: 5 out of 5 or even better.
Boy O boy! if every customer service is like theirs I would have a happy life purchasing some very top range expensive electronic stuff (but I don't because most of the CS is really pathetic, esp. in UK - no offense). As I ponder on what to do with my (now dead Jaybird) I realised that they have a lifetime sweat warranty. WooHoo! Big Smiley face!
Remember folks, it was a Saturday. I sat in front of my PC. Got to their website (word of advise - always register your expensive electronic items, if the company allows you to) it helps if something goes wrong with your purchase. I went to their online chat assistance. I would like to mention the name of the gentlemen who took my chat call (Mr Nathan) and much to my surprise, after just few very straightforward questioning and answering about how and where and when, he approved my warranty claim. It took me from point of contact to point of confirmation only 20 minutes to get the approval. Once the warranty is approved, he sent me an email. Since I was in London, and they are in US. He suggested that there is no point for me to send the old items back and spend money in doing so (sooper cool Jaybird) rather he asked me to just cut the cord of my dead Jaybird to satisfy the return requirement. I cut the cords (oh how painful!) then send a photo of the dead Jaybird along with an RMA number (which was provided in an email) by replying back to him. After that I got an email confirming that my replacement Jaybird is on its way to me. This all took place on the same Saturday folks, would you believe it. (I mean of course, I was also quick to reply to all his emails but still..how Awesome!!!) Then after an anxious wait of 5 days I got the Jaybird delivered to my address.
I am using it now and it works seamlessly though I will not be taking it on my long runs anymore. Not worth the hassle and not sure if Jaybird will send me another one second time around ( I might appear as a serial claimer). Woosh!
So, here is the update. Hope it helps in the purchase. I would certainly recommend buying this earphone.
You may ask why I gave 4 out of 5. Just because I want them to keep improving, as I am one of those customers who always wants better than before. So had to leave one star short. Otherwise, its 10 out of 5, if that's even possible!
Take care and Enjoy.
See those things sticking out of the earphone? those are rubber. You attach those yourself, and they fall off really easily, so much so that I already lost one within 5 days use. How? I had taken the earphones out my ear whilst I was walking along and left them resting over my shoulders around my neck and the rubber thing simply slipped off somewhere in my walk.
There is too much distance from the L-bracket-to the bit that sits in your ear, meaning these are actually -more- likely to fall out of your ear than cabled earphones.
One of the plastic caps on the earphones is pulled off to reveal this cheap looking cheesewire thin bit of plastic that is supposed to hold it in place supposedly so you don't lose it, but I can see that snapping with every day use even when you are careful very easily.
The buttons do not feel nice to press.
You would think when you power on your earphones it would tell you their battery level. It does not. You cannot check unless first disconnect the device from your mobile and take them out of your ears, at which point you only get to look at a LED which will either be red or green, which does not indicate much at all, to be honest.
The bass response is nice if you can actually get these earphones to stay in your ears. I could not, despite trying all the fittings.
Would I buy these again? No.
I use it over the ear and it's comfortable and I have used it for over 4 hours without any problems. It's a bit more cumbersome if you wear glasses like I do but it still works if you put it above the arms of the glasses.
I have rated this down because in the over ear position the microphone is actually behind the ear so you cannot use the microphone at all. For the price and this flaw I would look at possibly cheaper alternative.
I did loose an ear piece and it seems Jaybird does not sell replacement parts in the UK so it required an order to be placed in the US and shipping to the UK which came to about 1/4 of the price of these earphones at retail! Be warned and that goes for the "wings" as well.
** Update 2016-02-07 **
Lost one of the "wings" and put a smaller one on. This is where i noticed the rubber stretches over time and slips off too easy. This is also noted in the rubber ear tips as well.
It has been just under 2yrs since I’ve bought these headphones. I only use them during the summer months as my other Sony headphone covers the entire ear and I find them too warm. I consider myself a careful owner who only subject them to slight to moderate use. I do not use them during workouts. Recently the power button has stopped working and now I can not turn them on. I have done some research and discovered this is a common fault. I’m out of warranty and I doubt Incan repair them myself as the components are very small and delicate. I have therefore reduced my rating to 2 stars.
————————-
Sounds amazing! In fact the sound quality is probably better then my Sony MDR 1000X. Though the latter is an over ear headphone so not like for like comparison. Battary life is good too.
1) I don't know if it's just me and my iPhone but there seems to be connection issues. The sound I get through the headphones can be very 'jittery', almost as if it is losing connection all the time. I'm quite a tall person but not enough so that the headphones are out of range when I have my phone in my pocket.
2) The controls are completely different to any other set of headphones I've had. I get the idea behind adding more functions requires a re-work of the current system but I find it quite clunky and not very user friendly.
3) I find the headphones falling out my ears constantly. I have tried various sizes of earbuds and the silicone ear holder but to no avail. The earbuds supplied with the headphones aren't very good so I recommend getting higher quality ones. I now use some earbuds I have taken from an old pair of creative headphones which has ameliorated the staying in place issue slightly.
4) Sound quality is mediocre (this may be pertaining to point 1), not what I'd expect of a pair of headphones costing this amount however. I am aware that the wireless element will likely influence it but I would still expect better for my money.
I know my review seems very critical of these headphones and you're likely questioning why I rated it 4/5 stars but in all honesty, I can live with some of these issues. These headphones got some of the best reviews out of the wireless in-ear range so maybe I was just unlucky.
