Although my Bluebuds still work like new, I needed (?) a new pair for several reasons, so when they *finally* released the X3's, I got them. They're not a huge evolution compared to the X2, or even the X (so how did it take them MONTHS to release them is beyond me), but after having them for a month, I can safely say they have dethroned the X. They are the perfect running companions.
Pros +++
------------
- Bluetooth 4.1. This is the main reason I bought them, and the ability to pair them with several devices AT THE SAME TIME is amazing. I can listen to music form one device and seamlessly answer calls on another. I run with an Apple Watch and an iPhone. Workout app and music on the Watch, other workout app and phone capability on the phone. All work together seamlessly.
- The material and overall feel is really good quality - although I haven't had them for long, I think they'll be a long-lived as the X are.
- The overall size of the ear part has been reduced compared to the X. As a results they stick out less, and they feel more secure. They're also much less awkward than the X2 were.
- The sound is really good for headphones of this type. The app that allows you to tweak the balance to your personal preference, in addition to giving you a lot of presets to choose from, is amazing. Best sound I've found for neckbuds.
- The battery life. A good day of work, and they do charge faster than the X used to.
- The flat cord. No mess, no tangles, trying to straighten it, no bouncing around. It's also a great length. Not too long, not too short. AND you can shorten it if you want.
- The side control thingy is a bit too big but it's flat and when you wear them over the ear with a shortened cord, it's super duper comfortable and sits right were you need it to for easy operation. Bonus point for making you feel like a secret agent every time you use it.
- The possibility to shorten the cord so it will sit flush with your head and never move. For active people (runners for example) this is a MUST - they won't move, you can move your head any way you want, it's like you're not wearing anything, and the buds won't move out of your ear either. At first I was wearing them under the ear with the cord behind my head and they were never a problem. Then I tried over the ear and fitted cord, and will never go back. As stated above, the placement of the control panel when worn this way is just perfect.
- The tips. The headset comes with two sets of tips : silicon tips and foam tips. I dislike the foam ones (I haven't even tried them this time around so I won't judge them, but I hated them on the X2) but I love the silicon ones. They're extremely comfortable, and out of all the tips I've tried, the Jaybirds are the one that fit me the best. Obviously, this is going to be super personal, but kudos to Jaybird for giving two options in 3 sizes each. I don't use the wings, but I did try them and found them both effective and more comfortable than they were on the X.
- The little pouch. I like it.
- The shirt clip. Not something you'd think is useful, but it actually is. Since I shorten my cord, they don't rest too well around my neck anymore when not listening to music. I use the little shirt clip to clip them to something instead (usually my pants pocket).
Cons ---
-----------
- [Edited 11/01 to add] I've experienced some connection issues where the music cuts out intermittently for a minute or two, then the connection stabilises. This mostly happens as I'm getting outside (first minutes of my run for example), and a couple of times in the gym. It seems to be worse when I'm using them with my Apple Watch and/or with the shortened cord (e.g. the remote is on the right, next to my neck, and the watch is on my left wrist). I've read a few reviews mentioning this when putting their phone in their pocket, I haven't experienced this with my phone in my purse (which I wear on the right side). It usually settles after a minute or two, but if it happens to you, a workaround seems to be wearing them under the ear. I won't do that myself, but I will try to turn them around and wear the remote on my left side. I hope JB resolves this.
- The tips. They keep falling off when you're not wearing the headset. I keep having to dig them out of my purse, or look around for them if I so much as rough the headset up a bit. This was a problem on the X, it was a problem on the X2, and is STILL a problem on the X3. This is unacceptable, Jaybird, especially when you can't buy replacement tips of the right size on their own, you have to get the whole kit that you don't need. I'm probably going to make them stick with some glue this time.
- The charging method. I get it. When you reduce the size of the buds, you have to deport stuff into the control panel, and you don't have room for charging anymore. I'll impatiently wait for Jaybird to figure this out, and in the meantime I've attached the charging port to my car keys so I won't lose it. That said, it's incredibly easy to lose (or forget) so Jaybird shouldn't charge for replacing it.
- When wearing the buds under the ear with a loose cord, the control panel will weight them down a bit and pull the cord. While it's not a huge problem, not nearly as much as others, it's still kind of annoying, especially since that never happened with the X and their very very small control panel.
- The voice. OMG are the start up voice and little music annoying. I wish the app would allow me to customize that.
Quick comparison with the BeatsX
----------------------------------------------
I also have the BeatsX (Apple's everyday neckbuds with the same kind of design) that were given to me. The tl;dr; is that I like the X3 better for all activities but one, and that's taking calls.
*** X3 wins:
- Cord Length. The BeatsX's cord is unnecessarily long and will curl around your cheeks and just plain annoy you all the time.
- Cord Length(2). I just can't stress how great the fact that you can shorten the X3's cord to fit around your head is.
- Sound. There's no comparison. The BeatsX sound is correct, I guess, but nowhere near as good as the X3, even with the stock settings. I tested going back and forth between the two (one in each ear) and there is just no comparison. The X3 blows the BeatsX out of the water, especially if you like bass.
- The X3 are water resistant / sweat proof, the BeatsX are not. If you're a person who sweats on them regularly, or run in the rain, you want a water resistant / sweatproof headset.
*** X3 loses:
- Mic / Phone : here the BeatsX can't be beat (ahah). Pairing within iOS ecosystem is unparalleled due to Apple's X1 chip (same as the AirPods), and the length / shape of the cord is clearly made to optimize the mic. Calls are super easy to take, and the person you're talking to will hear you crystal clear. This is even more true since I wear my X3 over the ear and the microphone ends up behind my ears, which is clearly not optimal for phone calls.
- Magnets : the magnets on the BeatsX are great (and fun). I wish all earbuds had those.
Now I keep the BeatsX in my work bag, sometimes wear them around at work when I go out and about the office and might have to take calls / join meetings, and use the X3 for absolutely everything else. The bLuebuds X, still working like new, are in my gym bag for those days where I forget the X3.
Power on, battery 50%. power off power on, battery 100% power off power on, battery 80%....ok....I'm not sure why when restarting your buds there is such a difference in reported battery levels. Perhaps it's a bug, lol. And they were actually at about 80% charge.
Next song BEEEP!!, next song BEEP!. It's pretty loud and terrible changing tracks. Also for the price, would it have killed them to include a power adapter and to avoid having me to go through all my stuff to find one and then to find out I don't have one (who would have a .5 to 1 Amp charger ?! Now I got to go buy one because they recommend 500 milliamps. I have a 4 year old set of LG Tone hbs750 bluetooth headset and the sound stage and bass is a 50 times better. It seems like the mic is way better than my old LG though I have way less voice to text errors, which is nice. Oh yeah I just restarted it again an now it says battery is 40% fantastic...
The call quality is definitely lacking in comparison with my experience with other Bluetooth headphones. However it is acceptable given the tradeoffs. With this headsets reduced weight and portability, good earbud design and long battery life the call quality is a non issue for me since I mainly use the for music. I also tried Google assistant at work quite well. Bluetooth range that I have observed is 25 feet within sight only, if you go into another room even 10 feet away it cuts out and sometimes loses connection. After finally finding a good eq the sound is immensely better, still not as good as the LG Tone 750 I had. But I am thoroughly enjoying the portability and sound of these headphones. I used them about 2.5 hours yesterday and still had 79% battery. The over the ear fitment is a great idea and provides easy and fast access to the controls (don't make it too tight when using this method) but I find myself fiddling with it too often because it doesn't sit quite right or moves shortly after getting it perfectly situated.
I think one of the biggest problems is the ear gels just don't fit right. Large is way too big, medium fotsbright at first but as soon as you move pops itself out just enough to lose that great sound and seal you just had! The small gels just don't seal at all because that's for like really small ears.
I think I prefer just it hanging around my neck, I do use the shirt clip that goes on the back of your shirt at the base of your neck, it's handy for keeping the cable centered and from falling off if you lose a bud over your shoulder. I made some more phone calls and quality is alot better than my first impressions, all though there is a wired sensation when having both earbuds in and talking on the phone, it uncomfortable sounding and feeling but I can't quite explain why. My old earbuds I had no problem using both while on a call, I actually preferred having both in so I could hear well and it felt more insulated from the surroundings and quiet. While we are on the subject, when you are done with a call and push the call button, no sound is made to let you know the call is ended, at that point you just listen carefully too see if anyone is there and then have to pull bout your phone to make sure it's ended...Everytime! A call ended tone would have been great guys.
I will say after reading all the reviews that mention battery failure etc etc, I will be purchasing an extended warranty, I'm not really into throwing my money away so when I purchased this 100 headset I expect it to last a long time. Square trade offers a $10 portable electronics warranty that should cover this. All said, I am happy with this purchase and hope they last a few years. I always have a backup set for home listening so perhaps once the X 4's come out I will try those out or the RHA MA 750's. One other thing of note I had hoped would be solved by new earbuds. I was hoping for a finer volume adjustment with more variation, it's basically the same but may be a phone/operating system limitation. Other people mentioned random and frequent dropped Bluetooth connection, I also experienced this, but it was solved by a phone reboot and actually my old buds did the same thing, again it's an Android/software issue. It happens every few days and isn't that bothersome since restarting your Android phone every so often keeps it happy.
Good buds I recommend them, just spend the extra $11.04 and buy an extended warranty!
Update: Allthough most people may not have this issue, my ears are quite sore from the wing tips (I tried small and medium) my canals are also irritated and I have work earbuds for 7 hours a day for 4 days straight with little to no irritation. (Using my LG Tone Pro 750 buds). I am determined to give these another few days but as much as I fiddle with them because they don't fit/feel right throughout the day and then irritation they cause I may not end up keeping them. Im going to try just the ear gels/tips and take off the wings which don't fit and cause much irritation. I'll update in a few days.
Also, I'm at 65% battery after 1.5 hours of music at 50% volume so far. But as I've stated before the battery level is plus or minus ALOT, so who knows how much battery is left. On day two I used them sparingly and I always turn them off when not in use. After 2 hours of use at low levels the headset reported a battery level of 40%. Pretty disappointed if this is true after such a small amount of use. 7/19 Today I started my buds with 100% I played them for 30 minutes and it's telling me I have 70% battery left. That's rediculous! With a lack of other headphones on the market that have these great features, I will be keeping these. Again as I stated battery life is alot less than I expected but the small size, good sound, customizable EQ and decent mic is more than enough to satisfy me.
Update 12/8
Battery life is pretty poor at this point less than 6 months old. At 30-50% volume the battery barely lasts 3-4 hours. I am in the process of an RMA to get another set. Also, one thing I noticed and forgot to mention. I wear ear protection over my ear buds generally because of the loud equipment I work around, to protect my hearing and enjoy the music. These earbuds are sooo long I can't fit my 3M hearing protection over the top. Ive tried a few different over the ear protection and none of them work with these buds.
I even went so far as trying the built in Bluetooth ones and they were just awful btw.
They press the earbuds into my ear canal very hard and hurt and are uncomfortable. A much lower profile design would have been much appreciated. As I can't use these many days or parts of the day depending on what I doing at work. The New X4s look to be the same. Sad day. The search continues...

Top reviews from other countries
They have one critical flaw though that has me telling you to STAY AWAY: Bluetooth is implementation is HORRIBLE. They connect easily enough, however, from even 2-feet away (smartphone in pocket while wearing headphones), so much as turning your head to one side results in crackling and dropped audio.
For comparison: Plantronics Backbeat Fit, and Backbeat Pro 2, as well as Sony WI-SP500s will stay connected from 20 feet away, regardless of what I'm doing.
If you need further convincing, check other negative reviews of the X3 - it's commonly reported Jaybird dropped the ball on Bluetooth with this model. There is no fix - its an inherent design "choice" (read: "flaw").
I'm not fond of the choice to go with a proprietary charging adaptor either and would dock a star for that but the Bluetooth issues already have me removing "all the stars".
TL;DR: top marks in almost every category but poor Bluetooth implementation make these a fail.
I wanted to like these very much, if not just to avoid the hassle of returning an item, but I couldn't force myself to like them. On the plus side, returning the item to Amazon was no hassle at all.
