Top Customer Reviews
Got them at BestBuy for $99 bucks the day before Thanksgiving and they are great headphones. The sound is deep and bass-y and they are light and comfortable. Coming from the X2s, these were a nice bump up in sound quality. The X3s, unlike the X2s, don't have independent audio controls. The control directly change the volume on the phone and they get louder than my X2s, which is nice. THE HUGE PROBLEM IS THE CHARGER! I understand they want to make more money but to not make these microUSB is a huge flaw and takes 2 stars from the whole thing. It's just a money grab. If you lose the less than inch squared adapter you are SOL and have to spend $25 bucks plus shipping to get a new one. They go dead at work or on the bus. Hope you're almost home because you can't change them unless you carry to adapter with you (which you'll more than likely break since it's small and plastic) or just go headphone-less until you get home to charge them. It's TERRIBLE TERRIBLE design and a huge reason NOT to buy these.
They are fragile. 4 days after buying them the ear bud broke. I was changing to a different sized Comply ear tip and the whole metal piece just broke right off. Seems like it's glued in place and they didn't have enough glue in there. Went back to BestBuy and they only had the white pair in stock since these things are very hard to find currently. My options was to return them and have to re-buy them when they came back in stock, but not for the $99 Black Friday weekend price or just wait and maybe do a warranty replacement.
I went the warranty route after checking the 3 BestBuys in my area and none had them in stock. Messaged them on Facebook and they responded within a day and asked for pictures and then told me that they'd send me a new pair, but they are out of stock and I'd just have to wait. They asked if I wanted Freedoms instead and I said no I had tried them and didn't like them at all and I'd just wait for the X3s. I also asked if it was a week or so wait or if they were expecting a longer wait. They said they had no time frame but that they would send me a pair of Freedoms that I could use and keep and when the X3s come in stock they'd send them to me also. So I agreed and picked the black Freedoms and X3s. They sent me a UPS label and I shipped them JUST THE HEADPHONES and kept the charger and box and everything. Now I'm just waiting for either the Freedoms or X3s to show. The customer service was 4 stars out of 5. Took about a week to get the return label and they'd reply everyday around 4pm and if I replied right away I wouldn't head back til 4pm the next day, but they were reasonably responsive. I'll update once I get the replacements.
Jaybird Customer Service – 0 Stars
I originally purchased these earbuds directly from Jaybird for full MSRP ($129). They weren’t available on Amazon at the time. The earbuds were backordered so I didn't get them until two weeks after I ordered them. Around the time my earbuds arrived, Best Buy and other companies began discounting them in their early Black Friday sales. I contacted Jaybird support directly via email to ask if they, too, would be discounting the earbuds. No response. So I bought some at Best Buy and decided to return my original earbuds (in brand new condition) to Jaybird for a refund...and that's when the heartache began...
Nov 20 - First email to Jaybird support. No response.
Nov 22 - Emailed Jaybird support and requested an RMA# to return the earbuds. No response. Checked my Junk Mail and email wasn’t in there.
Nov 27 - Sent a follow up email to Jaybird support requesting a return. Again no response.
Nov 29 - Started a chat session with Jaybird customer service to request a return. Was denied because they have a 30-day return policy and I ordered my earbuds on Oct 28 (32 days earlier). MY EARBUDS WERE BACKORDERED AND DIDN’T ARRIVE UNTIL 2 WEEKS AFTER I ORDERED THEM but this made no difference to Jaybird's customer service agent. This is one of the most asinine policies I’ve encountered. By this policy, if a product is backordered for over 30 days, the customer can never use Jaybird’s 30-day return policy to get a refund.
After another 3 phone calls and about 2-3 hrs of my time (including waiting on hold and getting transferred to different departments), I was finally able to process the return. During those conversations, I got a lot of “not my department” speak.
Earbud Performance – 4 Stars
Pros: I really like the sound from these earbuds and I love that I can customize it using the app. Additionally, during runs and workouts, the earbuds don’t feel like they will fall out of my ears. Another key feature for me was a good mic where I could make and take phone calls. While it’s not like a Plantronics pro headset (I wouldn’t expect that), the X3’s mic does perform well. People tell me that my voice is clear but they can also hear some background noise. When I talk on the phone using my X3s, I let the wire dangle under my chin (vs behind my neck) so the mic is a bit closer to my mouth.
Cons: The X3s allow you to connect to two different devices at once. This is a great feature because you can connect via Bluetooth to your computer and your smartphone at the same time. So if you’re watching a TED talk on the computer with the earbuds and someone calls, you can talk the call on the earbuds without missing a beat. The trouble is that, when I connect to two devices, the X3’s audio performance gets choppy. It has gotten so bad that I only connect to one device at a time rendering that feature useless. Another con is that the charging connector is a bit difficult to connect to the earbuds. You have to get the orientation and location just right to get the charger to connect properly.
Overall, the product quality is great but the customer experience is severely lacking. If you buy the X3s, be sure to get them from a reputable retailer like Amazon. Do whatever you can to avoid having to interact with Jaybird directly.
THIS REVIEW WOULD HAVE BEEN 5 STAR - if it wasnt for the charger. I have micro usb cords everywhere at home, work and car, which makes the charging of my devices so easy. However with these X3s, I have to carry the damn adaptor everywhere I go. What a bloody nuisance. I tried looking on amazon/ebay for spare charging adaptors, but I cant find any. It sucks the charging experience cost you guys a Star.
