Jay's Gay Agenda Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 765 ratings

From debut novelist Jason June comes a moving and hilarious sex-positive teen rom-com about the complexities of first loves, first hookups, and first heartbreaks - and how to stay true to yourself while embracing what you never saw coming, that’s perfect for fans of Sandhya Menon and Becky Albertalli.

There’s one thing Jay Collier knows for sure - he’s a statistical anomaly as the only out gay kid in his small rural Washington town. While all his friends can’t stop talking about their heterosexual hookups and relationships, Jay can only dream of his own firsts, compiling a romance to-do list of all the things he hopes to one day experience - his Gay Agenda.

Then, against all odds, Jay’s family moves to Seattle, and he starts his senior year at a new high school with a thriving LGBTQIA+ community. For the first time ever, Jay feels like he’s found where he truly belongs. But as Jay begins crossing items off his list, he’ll soon be torn between his heart and his hormones, his old friends and his new ones...because after all, life and love don’t always go according to plan.

JAY’S GAY AGENDA Is Pure Joy!
JAY’S GAY AGENDA is the joyous, truthful, funny, complicated, sweet, swoony and heartfelt LGBTQIA-positive YA novel the world needs in 2021. In every sentence, author Jason June’s love for his story and empathy for his characters shines through, and in protagonist Jay Collier is one of my new favorite leading book characters, someone I related to over and over again as I remembered the person I was in my teenage years, discovering my sexuality and excited to explore the possibilities of what this could mean for me. Jay knows who he is, but he has a lot to learn, makes mistakes along the way, and is wise and good enough to recognize when he’s hurt the people he loves most. That the story largely takes places in my favorite city, Seattle, is just another plus in a wonderful book without minuses. JAY’S GAY AGENDA is pure joy, honest and romantic and just plain lovely. I can’t wait to see what comes next for Jason June. He is a fresh, immensely talented writer with a unique and necessary voice.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperTeen for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

This book is such a giant hug to the heart. Wow, I feel so full and full of love. Jason, this was adorable, lovely and full of real teenage problems with teenage solutions. Add a dash of learning lessons and loving yourself and boom, you’ve got this book.

Following the story of Jay, a boy from a small town and being the token gay, he finds out right before his senior year his mom got a promotion and he now has to move. The pages are filled with Jay learning what it’s like to be gay in a city full of gays, while learning who he is.

What a fantastic story! While it was a little predictable, I don’t think that detracted from the story by any means. It was sweet as sugar, but filled with lessons for a lifetime, like sprinkles on a delicious cupcake. I loved following Jay, Lu, and Max’s journey as they navigated what it was like to learn the tough lessons, make new friends and realize what really mattered.

If you want a story to warm you hug while simultaneously it makes you want to hug the main characters- this is the book for you!

I adored this book. I couldn’t put it down!

Plot points have been well covered in other reviews, so I’ll just say that I connected with the main character instantly and enjoyed every second of his journey.

Aside from being a fun and heartwarming read, Jay’s Gay Agenda contains some great examples of consent, safe sex, and responsible drinking that feel organic to the story and authentic to the characters, not like they’ve been shoehorned in to Teach A Lesson. The characters also have valuable discussions about body dysmorphia and stereotyping, and Jay’s actions in the end of the book set a positive example when he chooses to treat others with respect and empathy even when it requires a lot of humility from him to do so.

My children love Jason June’s books for younger readers and I’m excited to offer Jay’s Gay Agenda to them when they are old enough to appreciate young adult stories!

It’s disappointing to say that this book was painful to read because of how immature and whiny the main character acts throughout the novel. If it wasn’t stated that the main character is a SENIOR in high school, I would’ve assumed he was in 6th grade.

The story otherwise was fine, but rather unremarkable. The entire plot surrounded around the Jay’s sexuality, which is fine, but I prefer when novels have sub plots that don’t reduce the character’s personality to their sexual orientation. It felt like Jay’s two standout features were his immaturity and his gayness. Very bleh.

The only reason why I gave this a 4-star review instead of a 5 was solely because of the ending. It felt too rushed and a clean. I wanted to see a bit more grit, especially with how the main part of the story played out (not everything needs to be wrapped up with a perfect bow). Other than the ending, the book is a great read. It is fun and well paced. Definitely recommend adding this book to your collection.

    THANK YOU JASON JUNE.

There was so much relatable to my experience of "finding myself" that the story moved at a perfect pace.

Yes, everything is wrapped up in a pretty little package with a bow by the end but one of the joys in this type of book is being able to smile once you've finished it. The reality of being queer already has its challenges that we actually live in - do we have to be kept there in the books we read too? Nah.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and as a male in his 40's it's not limited to a specific age group, much like what Heartstopper has done for queer folks of all ages.

Who knows, maybe we can see this story streaming on Netflix soon too? Hint hint :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Une idée de base qui me plaisait bien, mais au final c'est une déception
Reviewed in France on March 11, 2023
