Whoa! Another fine collection of great jazz on the French disques Vogue (sic) label. Similar to the first collection, "Jazz On disques Vogue", this latest set, which I just now finished listening to, is superb. The 48 page booklet is fantastic--similar to the previous set, with complete recording information (but left off the singer's name on the tune "Dark Shadows" by the Charlie Parker Quartet, and lists a nonexistent track on another disc--a small quibble), small color reproductions of album jackets, and an essay in both French and English that gives some foundation for all this fantastic music. Each disc comes packaged in a thick cardboard, original looking period album jacket. The quality packaging was done in great detail with crisp period graphics and is well done--befitting music of this caliber. The cleaned up sound is very good considering how many albums/EPs are included. But there's some tracks (like the Pettiford stuff from 1950) that audiophiles will definitely not be too enamored of because of muffled/distorted sound. But even then the music is simply great. And certainly don't let that small caveat get you off this collection.
This collection is just so good, so full of great jazz (some live) from the 1940's into the 1950's, I had to write something--even though it's already been reviewed--I hate to waste people's time with possible redundancy. Included are good things from the Billy Strayhorn Trio (with Duke Ellington also on piano), Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck, Errol Garner Trio, James Moody, Howard McGhee, Oscar Pettiford Quartet, Stan Getz Quartet, Wynonie Harris, Art Tatum, Bud Powell, Monk, Albert Ammons, Mahalia Jackson, Chet Baker, Charlie Christian, Jelly Roll Morton, Hot Lips Page, recordings from Gene Norman's Just Jazz Concert, Earl Bostic, and a lot of other great period jazz along with a couple of tracks of some blues from John Lee Hooker, Dixieland from Lu Watters, some boogie woogie piano by Ammons, Lewis, and Davis (solo and one duet with Lewis and Ammons), and some gospel that's the real deal, released on many record labels--some you'll recognize--while others will be new to you. Even Blind John Davis is here.
And wait until you see the sidemen on these jazz sets--wow. But in another genre, tough R&B, check out the tunes and sidemen on disc No. 12, with tracks by Wynonie Harris, Slim Gaillard, Tiny Bradshaw, Little Esther, The Dominoes, and Earl Bostic. Harris is here with several smokin' bands with tunes like "Bloodshot Eyes", a moody "Luscious Woman", and "Good Rockin' Tonight", with people like Joe Wilder, Hot Lips Page, and Hal Singer. Gaillard's bands include Howard McGhee, Preston Love, Lucky Thompson, Teddy Edwards, and Bam Brown. Bradshaw's band includes Red Prysock and a great small group on "I'm A High-Ballin' Daddy". Esther's bands have Ben Webster, Preston Love, and Pete Lewis. The Dominoes feature the great Clyde McPhatter in front of a honkin' band. Bostic's outfits have players like Lowell "Count" Hastings, Gene Redd, Rene Hall, Keter Betts, Jimmy Cobb, John Coltrane, Al Casey, and Clifton Smalls. These were some hot singles in their day. Whew!
I've been listening to jazz for a long, long time and thought I might've become a bit jaded. But I found myself listening to and enjoying one disc while peeking in the booklet to see who's playing on the next disc or two. One of my favorites is disc No. 07--with the Dizzy Gillespie Jazzmen, Charlie Parker Quintet, Fats Navarro, Red Norvo And His Selected Sextet, Hank Jones Quintet, Howard McGhee, James Moody Sextet, Buck Clayton, and Hot Lips Page--and all the music recorded in the '40s, and again, check the sidemen.
Bottom line--jazz fans/collectors will have a field-day with this collection. Are there any more collections like this coming? Hopefully so.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I love Jazz and this collection is great, the old stuff still has good fidelity, and it sounds better than most. The 1950's stuff is as good as any. The couple of gospel and blues Cd's are good too. Lots of variety, I'm impressed. I have a large Jazz collection, I go a community radio show, but there little duplication to what is in the box and I will be playing a lot of these cuts on the air, and I'm pretty picky. There are also a lot of musicians I didn't know filling in the cds with the last cuts, very cool, like a treat you didn't expect.

41 Original American Jazz Albums plus several 7" singles & EPs in one killer box!
Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2016
A superb collection of 41 mainly original 10" albums, plus a number of relevant 7" singles & EPs, all originally released in America on various labels including - Mercer Records, Roost, Modern, Discovery, Esoteric, Down Home, Dixieland Jubilee, Ragtime, Dial, 3 Deuces, Blue Note, Apollo, King, Federal, Commodore, Fantasy & Pacific Jazz. These albums were then re-issued in France on either the Swing or Vogue labels, and are now available again thanks to this wonderful Sony Legacy/Vogue Box.
The original artwork is attractive, and all 20 CDs have very sturdy cardboard sleeves. The actual design (and size) of the box itself is also very cool. There is an informative and colourful booklet included with track listings etc., so no need to struggle with sleeve notes!
The music is vintage quality Jazz, presented in fine style and is excellent value for money.
The CDs are mostly Mono and have been well mastered, possibly sounding even better now than than they ever did.
I've been listening to practically nothing else for the past few weeks and really appreciate listening to 1940s/1950s Jazz in Mono - as it was originally recorded/intended to sound.
It's encouraging to know Sony/Legacy are paying attention to some of the vast treasure trove of (currently) unavailable Jazz originally issued way back in the 1940s & early 1950s.
Just like the other box in this series this one is also the bees knees, and no Jazz lover interested in music from this period can afford to miss it!
A genuine goldmine of Jazz recordings and one of the most impressive selections I have ever had the pleasure to hear!
Considering all the cheapo cheapo box sets out there containing clones of original issues and issued by dubious labels this Sony Music box is refreshingly different because it is completely authentic - both in sound and packaging.

The music is vintage quality Jazz, presented in fine style and is a must for collectors (or anyone else too for that matter!)
The CDs have been well mastered, possibly sounding even better now than than they ever did. It should be noted that here and there the sound quality may not be the best, but that is a minor gripe when all things are taken into consideration - like the date some sessions were recorded, and the circumstances under which they were recorded.
All discs were recorded between 1940s & 1950s and presented here in (original) Mono - they way they were originally recorded/intended to sound.

Great collection of vintage jazz

Brilliant value for money, most of the greats are included here.
The only disappointments are:
1) Most, if not all, of the included albums are in mono. A pity they couldn't have been remastered for stereo. Nevertheless sound quality is pretty good - but don't expect modern hi-fi standards.
2) Some of the included albums are not jazz at all. There is gospel stuff from Mahalia Jackson, and blues from John Lee Hooker. If I wanted blues or gospel I would not have wanted to buy them in a jazz collection.

Not much to add to previous reviews but great jazz, some of which I originally purchased on 78's, and at this price great value. Buy it before it disappears or the price rockets!
