Editorial Reviews

The Jazz Raj is a Jonas Hellborg trio recording continuing his collaboration with guitarist Mattias 'IA' Eklundh and introducing drummer Ranjit Barot. The music is seamlessly bonding Western and Indian improvised music while avoiding the stylistic cliches that are so often the pitfalls of this type of music. The Jazz Raj continues the tradition of the bass/drums/guitar trios that Hellborg has been fronting for more than 2 decades featuring wonderful musicians such as Shawn Lane, Buckethead, Michael Shrieve and Jeff Sipe. The tracks on the record are two half hour extended compositions with sections interrelated thematically using western interpretation of Indian Ragas. It is a genre defying work, it is Jazz Metal and Indian music but primarily music for the pleasure of listening.

I've been waiting since the original Art Metal CD came out to hear this follow up--I wasn't disappointed. I love everything Jonas Hellborg puts out. Get this CD now if you liked the original Art Metal.

Much improved from the original Art Metal release from 2007...this new trio version sounds very different, more open and for the mind....many hidden passages to explore in the 2 half hour long tunes that never get boring or jammy! Here they are stripped down to a trio of guitar/bass/drums, with a much more open and spacious improv progressive/fusion/metal sound. New drummer too, from John McLaughlin's more recent band (Ranjit Barot). 2 long songs made of multiple sections flow freely and have interesting riffs, odd meters, and solos that are woven seamlessly. It's amazing that songs this long also do not fall prey to aimless "jamming" so never get boring or repetitive. Great mood music while doing other things or for long drives. Nice balance of mood and energy. Super guitar playing. No indian tabla or keyboards to distract either like the first art metal album, here it's all organic instruments. Also does not fall into any type of cliche ethnic india music sounds. Any india influence comes from Hellborg's bass stylings that occasionally build lines that vaguely sound or feel ethnic, but are not overstated indian cliches. Thumbs up! I took a risk on this not knowing what to expect, and am not into overt indian or ethnic music, so if i didnt know that there was some of that influence (from the Title "Jazz Raj" and the liner notes saying so) I would not have noticed much if any indian influence...just ggrat fusion with a metal touch. Great trio groove improv. One reviewer said this was a groundbreaking genre defining work, but actually bassist Percy Jones of Brand X has been doing this type of thing since the 70s, even moreso in the 90s with his "Tunnels" project albums.Read more ›

Epic jazz fusion album that is like carnatic music played on modern swedish rock instruments.

Grab it just to hear something totally original from some virtuoso players.
