I have collected most of the Barnaby/Candid reissues, which I think are excellent recordings. However I have to say that these new Candid reissues are a big step up. Mr. Grudman's expertise really shines through on this series and this LP is no exception. Most notable differences in my A/B testing is the instrument positional staging and tonal definition. Grundman really takes advantage of the stereo recording, spreading the sound stage broadly across the room. Each instrument is clearly defined and spatially localized to present the best that a good stereo recording has to offer. My Barnaby reissue does not even compare.
If you were considering purchasing this series (especially this LP), you will not be disappointed.

I've been listening to Coleman Hawkins for years (check out my reviews of  Soul , Hawk Eyes  and  The Hawk Flies High ), but only recently have I discovered clarinetist Pee Wee Russell. This February 23, 1961 session for Nat Hentoff's Candid label reunited players who made their reputations in the pre-bebop era. While Hawk (along with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and bassist Milt Hinton) adjusted well to the stylings of modern jazz, my first impressions of Pee Wee, and trumpeter Emmet Berry, were that their playing and comfort level resided squarely in swing territory. Pianist Nat Pierce and drummer Jo Jones ably back the septet, but their contributions never break out of Ellington/big band mode. I was hoping for something more contemporary sounding for the early 60s ("Tin Tin Deo" comes closest), but what did I really expect -- this is "Jazz Reunion" not jazz exploration.
