Many years ago I put most of my LP's on cassette tapes and gave the LPs to my brother for safe keeping. I moved around alot back then and carrying a 1000 or so LPs around was obviously contra-indicated. For some reason I never put this particular side on cassette. When my brother passed away last year my nephew brought all my LPs back to me. When I ran across this one I put it on the turntable only to find that it had many annoying pops and skips making it a less than enjoyable listening experience. So I was very pleased to find that I could get this side on CD.
I am a jazz saxophonist having worked with Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Gerry Mulligan, and Ray Charles among others and it is my considered professional opinion that "Bill Potts' Porgy and Bess" is possibly the greatest jazz big band album ever produced!
The wonderfully written arrangements and spectacular personnel roster, made up of the "crème de la crème" of the New York jazz scene at the time, make this recording truly special.
Of particular interest aside from the top drawer soloists throughout and amazing section work is the rare appearance of drummer Charlie Persip who it seems did little big band work aside from Dizzy Gillespie's great band back in the forties.
If I have any quibble at all with this CD it is that aside from a list of track titles there is no personnel list or liner notes but since I have the original vinyl release this issue is, at least for me, moot.
Bottom line; If you love big band jazz you must own this side!!!

I always loved the music from this show, and I am a big band addict. This is a fairly rare and somewhat obscure album, but it is very enjoyable to listen to. Bill Potts is not a big name to the general public, but he is well known and well respected in jazz circles. And you can actually purchase some of the arrangements through Sierra music if you are a performer. I recommend the album.

I bought this album - 33 1/3 rpm - when it first came out, wore it out, bought another one. Then bought the CD a couple of years ago. It remains one of the essential big band albums of all time, at least in my opinion. I love the inventive charts, and the guys who are blowing are impeccable. Great ensemble work and solos. George Gershwin's P&B never had it so good.

Fabulous arrangements played by some of the best names of the 50's -- but the recording quality is lousy. I remember listening to this album with headphones in my college music department's recording library (~1961?). This copy sounds as 'tho it was copied over a telephone. 'Not a recording guru, bu enough of a musician to know something terrible was lost in sound quality here.

Since 1960, when I got the original vinyl recording, this has been one of the two big band albums I would grant a five star rating (this album for best studio band recording). The superb Bill Potts interpretations of one of the best musical scores ever just has no weaknesses; and the arrangements seem to hand pick the musicians that play them. I once heard someone say that listening to this alubum "makes you groan with pleasure". Perfect!
