Blog postThe eminent psychotherapist John Welwood coined the phrase “spiritual bypassing” to describe a common behavior he witnessed in Buddhist communities, a kind of “premature transcendence: trying to rise above the raw and messy side of our humanness before we have fully faced and made peace with it.” Spiritual bypassing is a byproduct of trying to […]

Blog postWhat stands in the way becomes the way.
~ Marcus Aurelius
I grew up on an east coast island. In the summers my family and friends pretty much lived at the beach. As a child in the 70’s, I was free to roam the shores without much adult supervision — the perfect setup for all kinds of hairy situations. My best friend brought a couple of real shovels to the shore one day, and we dug a hole in the sand so deep and wide that we got stuck in the squelchy muck at the bottom and could1 year ago Read more -

The definitive guide to infant and toddler feeding—from first foods to meals your child will love
To ensure that baby gets the best, most wholesome, and natural food possible, go homemade! The newest entry in the acclaimed Great Expectations series focuses on easy preparation of nutritious baby and toddler meals at home—from the first finger-foods to more than 130 delicious kid-tested recipes that will lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating.
The book teaches parents how to select the right food, set up a pantry (with a guide to key kitchen equipment), establish smart eating routines, and introduce a wide variety of tastes and textures. It also explores today’s most pressing nutrition issues: Should you buy only organic food? Is it healthy to restrict a toddler's calorie intake? Is a vegetarian diet good for a very young child? Additional resources include information on breastfeeding and food allergies, as well as a comprehensive listing of whole foods companies and products that make healthy eating faster and easier.
Jonny Bowden's The Healthiest Meals on Earth contains recipes for more than sixty dishes and drinks that use nutritious and healthy cooking methods. Forty of these dishes will combine to create ten different "poly-meals", specially crafted meals that contain key nutrients found to promote long-term health. They include Sweet and Thai Spicy Shrimp and Fruits, Persian Chicken with Autumnal Accompaniments, and the "iron booster" of Tender Calf's Liver and Sweet Beets. A "Healthiest Holiday Meal" features Citrus Stuffed Turkey, Zippy Fruit Salsa, and Sweet Potato Pie. The poly-meals are designed to be eaten three-to-five times a week.
Another ten recipes are not part of the poly-meal structure; instead they are one-pot meals that include Slow-Cooker Chicken Curry, Miso Bean Soup, and Venison Stew. A chapter on drinks will include nutritious smoothies, so-called "green drinks", and others. Jonny will provide healthy cooking tips throughout the book, as well as an analysis of the foods in each recipe. Side dishes, such as Cold Strawberry Soup and Veggie Slaw with Flax Oil, and desserts, such as Raw Chocolate Fondue, are also featured.
This book pairs well with Bowden's successful 150 Healthiest Foods, and can even be used as a companion cookbook.

When most of us think of oranges, we conjure up images of glasses of orange juice at Sunday morning breakfast or leafy groves in sunny Florida or Southern California. Oranges are a popular part of the American diet.
It is believed that the first cultivators of oranges were the Chinese several millennia ago. Eventually, orange cultivation spread to Japan, India, and the Middle East. And, through trade and conquest, the simple orange made its way to Southern Europe. It wasn’t long after that Christopher Columbus brought the first orange seeds to the New World on his second voyage in 1493. It’s here that orange cultivation really grew by leaps and bounds into the multi-billion dollar industry it is today.

Mushrooms have been a part of most of the world’s diet for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians held their flavor in such high esteem that the pharaohs decreed the mushroom fit only for royalty. In many civilizations across the millennia, the mushroom has been a cornerstone of religious rituals. Still others, including the Chinese, harnessed their medicinal properties for treating a variety of ailments.
Western medicine is beginning to catch up as the healing properties of mushrooms are beginning to be demonstrated scientifically. The three specific types with the greatest health benefits are maitake, shiitake, and reishi.
Because mushrooms are about 90 percent water, they can be quite versatile, complementing a variety of dishes from soups and sauces to entrees and side dishes. And they can be found at any time of year in the grocery store.

We’re pleased to give you one more reason to love chocolate. In what WebMD called “the best medical news in ages,” studies in Nature and the Journal of the American Medical Association show that the cocoa (or dark chocolate, which contains cocoa) can modestly lower blood pressure.
But here’s the thing: This endorsement of chocolate comes with a very big qualification. I am not talking about commercial chocolate bars. The health benefits come from the flavanols and antioxidants, and those are found in real cocoa. So if you want the benefits of these flavanols in your diet, you’ve got to get the real deal chocolate—high-cocoa-content dark chocolate. You’ll see the best of these bars with labels that say things like “60 percent cocoa” (70 percent or higher is even better, but much harder to find).
