About the author

Vincent Phan Tran is a nomad, having lived in 10 states over the last 20 years. He now spends his mornings sweating his butt off to delay old age, his days getting stuff delivered, and his nights and weekends playing pretend. He’s also a huge foodie, therefore the need to sweat his butt off.

Author Interview (www.kat-mueller.com/vincent-phan-tran)
1. When did you first know you wanted to be a writer? I’ve been interested since I was a child, but what finally got me off my butt and intentional was Stephen King’s book “On Writing”. Besides being a great read, it’s inspirational and got me putting pen to paper.
2. Are you a plotter or a pantser, and why? I started as a panster (all my favorite writers were), got nowhere fast, then switched. Best thing I ever learned was how to structure my stories end to end. Now I plot down to the scene level after doing character build ups and story premise. I’m FAR more productive when I can see the entire roadmap. It even lets me write scenes out of order based on my mood.
Doesn’t mean the story doesn’t find ways to surprise me…characters quicken and become people with their own minds, and they don’t always agree with where I think they should go. But that’s part of the magic I suppose.
3. What is the hardest part of writing? For me, starting my writing is like the first mile of a run. I’m achy, just starting to sweat, and slightly grumpy. But after that first mile, the endorphins kick in, runners high gets going, and I’m in the zone. Then, it’s all pleasure.
4. Does writing leave you energized or exhausted? Little bit of both. I’m absolutely “emptied” by the writing process…getting the words out on paper and shaping them draws essence. But, I’m always excited by what I see afterwards (even the bad stuff).
5. What do we need to know about your current work in progress/new release?
Halloween will see the release of JEBEDIAH’S CRIME, the first book in the Hinge Series. On a supernatural island in our present time, an aging bounty hunter is pitted against a supremely skilled champion of a powerful House over the life of a family. It’s an action-filled, pulse pounding introduction to a gritty, supernatural series filled with heartbreak and humor.
Early reviews have been great, and can be found at: vincentptran.com/reviews, Amazon, and Goodreads.
6. If you weren’t an author, what would your ideal career be? I’ve often wondered what being a print journalist would be like. It’s writing adjacent and I have this romanticized view of a crusading, truth seeking, pen is mightier than the sword figure chasing a life mission. PLEASE don’t ruin that with any reality checks.
7. Are there real life inspirations behind your characters? I suppose you could pick any of the larger than life figures like Genghis Khan, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Lee, etc and find a heavily fantasized bit of them in my characters. But for all those historians out there, these aren’t stories of how any of those people actually were or how things actually happened. They’re stories of how things should have been.
8. How do you get in touch with your inner villain to write an antagonist? I watched a CIA agent’s interview about terrorist groups around the world. Their core statement was “no one sees themselves as the bad guy.” So, I put myself in the mind frame of villains who themselves as the hero to their own stories. With a few exceptions, no one is all good, and no one is all bad. A lot of times, its perspective.
9. Do you have an interesting writing quirk? I don’t know if this is interesting or even a quirk, but my signal to start writing is putting on noise cancelling headsets and streaming movie soundtracks. I can’t have lyrics in the songs, but rolling instrumentals for emotional scenes and pounding soundtracks for action scenes gets me going every time.
Thank you so much to Vincent, and everyone, please check out his links and upcoming release! I’m very excited for it!

First off, I have to praise the world building that Tran has done for the Hinge series. For a debut outing, this book displays the kind of world building I would expect only from a seasoned author. The Hinge is a complex environment where science and magic co-exist and residents may develop powers that put some of them in the realm of the gods. Oh, and there might be an angel hanging out in the wings. This backdrop alone could sell this story. I couldn't wait for each no aspect of this fascinating world to be revealed.
Tran also creates a plethora of interesting characters from heroes like Ara and Jebediah to noteworthy villains like knife-wielding assassin Raja, his demented sister who can created a dragon out of thin air, and their despicable father. Add to this supporting characters like Mei and Magda and you have a rich, full ensemble to back a fast moving plot with plenty of complications to keep the heroes on their toes. And with baddies like Raja and Shira to keep them busy they barely have time to catch a breath. The best villains always think they are champions in their own right and Tran does not disappoint with the mercenary House Rakash.
This is a high octane roller coaster of thrills that I could easily see in my mind's eye as the story unfolds. A mark of a great storyteller.
There are only a few things that marred my enjoyment of this book. Every character of any import in the book had their own flash back. This got a little tedious for me as most of them didn't seem to add any real substance to the story beyond being interesting tidbits that spoke to the character's motivations. Definitely a case where less could be more.
The story also doesn't really get going until Jebediah finds a potential cure for his son's affliction which happens around 50 pages in. Don't get me wrong, those are 50 pages of whirling blades, roaring guns and lush setting detail. Still, I found myself wondering what the actual conflict of the story would be during all this.
Beyond those small points, this is a great epic urban fantasy that kept me interested throughout. I look forward to seeing this series develop. Jebediah makes a great tragic hero and Raja is a fantastic foil for him. Can't wait for book two.
That this is Vincent Tran's debut novel is something that you will find hard to fathom as you read this story. Vincent's characters are written with bold colors and depth. They are the larger than life personalities with an emotional relatability that make them quite memorable. Their heartbreak, doubts and fears bleed from the pages. While it's Jeb's story, others such as knifeman Raja, time-displaced Mei and Magda, and the stoic Ara each take their time in the spotlight making for a book teeming with highly engaging characters whose lives intertwine under the heavenly (or not so heavenly) direction of beings pulling their strings.
The story has a wonderful balance between well choreographed fight and action scenes and heartfelt and humorous character interactions. The human element of Crime is in harmony with the mystery and magic woven through the story as the inhabitants of the Hinge navigate it's unknown properties and the gifts it randomly hands out. Tran's descriptions of the Hinge allows for vivid imagery while allowing it to remain something beyond imagination.
While this is a complete story unto itself, as the start of the series, it does have many threads left to be unraveled and answers to be revealed. This is a must read for those who love fantasy/dystopian stories and a great option for those who want to dip their toes in the genre.

I truly believe Vincent Pham Tran is one to watch. My only disappointment being that there is no sequel yet. Am desperate to know how the Adversary will bring the battle to our hero's Jebadiah, Raga and Flint.

Vincent's descriptive writing will keep you transfixed. Vibrant images will form in your mind and play out like a movie, allowing you to completely immerse yourself in this action packed story. A brilliant debut book, and I'm excited to see what happens next in the series.

The story revolves around the life of an aging but highly talented bounty hunter named Jebediah Creek. He lives in a place called The Hinge. The Hinge is an absolutely fascinating island, which is situated in our real world, but set completely apart from it due to the fact it resides under a magical shield. Under this shield, the island exists without normal governments and has no established system of law. This is why there is a huge need for bounty hunters like Jebediah. The island does not conform to known laws of physics and basically pretty much anything can happen under the boundaries of the magical shield/wall, as the land, buildings and even some of the people are changed by the magic residing in The Hinge. Also able to reside in The Hinge are beings such as angels, demons and even gods.
I will leave it there in regards to the content of the story, so as to allow readers to discover the wonders of this remarkable place for themselves.
Right from the first page I was hooked and drawn completely into the world of The Hinge. Vincent Phan Tran's skill at telling the story kept me enthralled until the very end.
I liked the fact that the story had no major love stories going on. This meant that the story never went off on a romantic tangent and instead kept me completely involved with the action packed storyline, as it raced through the world of The Hinge.
I honestly cannot remember when I last enjoyed a novel so much. I simply could not put the book down. It had everything you could wish for in an action packed urban fantasy. I will certainly be eagerly reading everything else that Vincent Phan Tran writes, and cannot wait for the next in The Hinge series. Try Jebediah's Crime and I seriously can't imagine that you will be disappointed!

from start to finish this book had me gripped and wanting more.
The story and characters are amazing and even the ones you hate and want to die leave you breathless!
I can not wait for the next book in this series plus more from this author.
Vincent Phan Tran is a star in the making, everyone should go and buy this book now.
