I've seen Jekyll & Hyde performed 14 times (between Broadway, National Tours, and a couple of local productions in various cities). I own every recording of the show, and have every song memorized. I say all of this not to brag, or to say that I'm a big fan of the show. I say these things to say that I come into this recording with certain expectations. Those expectations color my review, therefore, for better or for worse.

That said, this is definitely a solid new recording of Jekyll and Hyde. Constantine Maroulis, Deborah Cox and Teal Wicks are all competent in their parts. In the duets they gel very well, and on some songs like Someone Like You, they shine better than I really expected. Maroulis's Jekyll is fine, though I personally find his Hyde a bit lacking. Given this is a concept recording, and not a repetitive nightly performance, he really could have gone all out on Hyde, but instead seems to reign it in making his Hyde just sound a little more "rock" than his Jekyll.

The thing holds the album back, in my opinion, is some of the re-orchestrations. Songs like Bring on the Men is drastically changed from it's predecessor in terms of pacing and tempo for it's first half. This is the Moment, arguably the most recognized song from the show, loses almost all of the excitement that is present in the Broadway Cast Recording, though thankfully it doesn't slide back to the sing-songy recordings that preceeded the OBC. Truthfully, I think that's the sentiment that pervades this recording... the sense of power is gone and replaced with a sense of pop-vocalizing.

That seems strange to me since the power behind it's songs is one of Jekyll & Hydes main strengths.

Between Concept Recordings, Cast Albums and Resurrections, Jekyll & Hyde has at least 15 different CDs out. I happen to own all of them so I'm pretty familiar with the score in all its incarnations and with many different ways of performing the songs. So, having that in mind, here are my thoughts on this CD:

- From the orchestrations point of view, the show was completely re-orchestrated. Now, overall I liked the orchestrations. There are songs where they work really well - I need to know (though why did they shortened the song is something one can't understand), Alive, His work and nothing more - there are other where they don't - specially Bring on the Men.
Are these Theatre orchestrations? No. Most definitely not. These are pop-rock orchestrations. In a Concert work wonderfully, in the show, I have some doubts.
A special note goes to "Dangerous Game" which has peculiar orchestrations. It all goes wonderfully up until the end orchestration-wise. It screams danger and sex everywhere. And then, just after the last lines are sung, the orchestrations stop screaming danger and sex and start screaming "70's porn film". I have no idea who thought of those, but the end of the song ruins everything.

- From the singing point of view only one of the vocalists fell short. Unfortunately it had to be the guy playing the title role. I don't know who's idea was it to give this role to Maroulis but he can't handle the score. Not in this "Concept" let alone on stage. He can't really differentiate his Jekyll from his Hyde with the simple exception that his Hyde is a tiny bit more rock-y. Still, apart from that, absolutely no difference. After listening to him I asked myself if Hyde was the name of a drunk Jekyll or really a new person born out of Jekyll's personality.

I haven't seen the show yet, not until Janary 6th, but I am so thrilled to have purchased this CD. Maroulis, Wicks and Cox all sound wonderful, terrific harmonizing on several of the songs. Listening to the album from start to finish is like experiencing the whole story being played out. I am truly looking forward to being able to see it live. Maroulis' voice never ceases to amaze me, beautiful rock tenor. What a wonderful gift he has. Purchase this album, you will not be disappointed.

I was very surprised. I have all the recordings of this show and I didn't expect it to be so good! THe music is gorgeous. Cox and Maroulis are superb. I just love it. I listen over and over again. And I agree with another reviewer in that I felt like the singers were telling a story. Just loved the interpretation.
